My baby is one year an a month old I took him to the doctor one month ago because he had really bad diaria. The doctore told me to give him lactose free formula until he got better and then to change to whole milk. After I gave him hole milk he got really costipated I called in and the Dr. told me that I should give him lactose free milk. Now i'm giving him the lactose free milk and I give him about 20oz of juice and 10oz of water. I was told by a friend that her Dr. baby told her to give her 2% milk and that it actually help her. I need all the help I can get because his bowl movements are two times a day but they are little hard balls and sometimes he would have little blood. Should I give him the 2% milk? Is there anything that can make him regular again? Please help I'm desperate and my babys Dr. has a long wating list and she canot see him until next month. She told me to try syrup in the milk. But I would like to know if there are any other options. Please Please HELP. Thank You.

My child had this too. We had to dilute everything with water. Your child is drinking too much but since he is constipated that is okay. You do however, need to start adding water to what he is drinking. Water will help him go easier as will Apple juice or white grape juice. You should be able to call the doctors office and get suggestions on what to give the child. Since it is coming out that's a good thing. This is a little gross but it works. My child hadn't gone to the bathroom for a couple days and I got worried. The doctor said to take a q-tip and put it in the bottom just enough that the cotton was in the bottom. This loosened up what was in there and also helped it come out easier so no blood. You should call the dr office and let them know how much liquid consumption is going on and that it's still this hard. Your child should be eating more and drinking less at 13 months old. With all that fluid things should just flow. Maybe there isn't enough in there to be a solid normal.

There is no excuse for a doctor not to see a baby that has blood in the stool. Keep pushing the receptionist. Go to the office and get in their face if you have to. The receptionist isn't going to know squat about health problems. Ask if they take walk ins or just show up in the morning. It's always better to be safe than sorry. It's your child and no one else is going to speak up for your precious one.

The good thing is that it is coming out in balls but is better out than in. And I have been puting water in everything that he drinks and the food I try to mash it to the smale pices. I called the DR. office and they told me that I could give him syrup in the milk or water and to aboid bananas, bread and anything that might slow him dow. The bad thing about my babys DR. is that she has so many patients that when I made an appointment for him they told me that she is booked until next month.

Stay away from anything that is a milk product as they will make constipation worse. Lactose free is the way to go also try miralax, you mix it with what your child drinks this will help as well. I have one child that has cronic constipation, we have been doing miralax since he was a year old, mix it with milk and he is fine. However we do still have our bad moments, even with doing this, recently he got very sick and complains of lower stomach pains. With us I think it is time to see a gastrologist. Good luck with your little man

oh and if your doctor can not see your one year old for a month, it is time to find a new doctor.. there is no excuse for that when a child is concerned.

Thanks for you coment and yes I do need to get a nother DR. but I also want to change the clinic because the DR. that I have is the best in that clinic and the others just are not good for me. I know they might know what they are doing but they are no friendly with kids and when it comes to my questions they do not know how to explain things so I can understand. I guess I have to talk the insurance to see how I can do that because I have never changed. Everything is so confusing because I'm giving him juice, vegetables, fruits and lactose free milk and he is still constipated and when I gave him hole milk I also gave him the same kinds of food and he was also constipated. I hope that your little boy gets better and that its nothing serious what he might have. Thanks again

maybe their stomach is sensible with milk product , my daughter use to have constipation when she was 18 months , the doctor advise to stay away from milk powder or any produce with milk for the time being until when she was ok . and at that time , she need to drink more water in case their body shortage of water due to constipation , hope your baby will recover soon

Hello, I know what you are going through, this has happen to our 2 year old, and his doctor reccomeded us to give our son straight apple juice, so not dilute it with water, the more natural the better, and we have notice a drastic change in one day, our little boy was back to regular bowl movements again. To be honest I don't think the kind of milk will make a difference, because our son is drinking 2% milk and he does just fine with it, maybe you should try 1% milk that tend to have more water added, and your son may digest it better. I hope your little one feels better soon. Happy My Lotting!

Hi onlinerep01 I was actually giving him some apple juice two days ago but I put a little bit of water because he was making faces to it. But I will try it again to see if he actually drinks it just how it is. And thank you for your coment I hope that something natural works so I don't have to give him any type of laxatives.

You received some good suggestions here. First thing I noticed though was that you said he gets 20 oz. of juice per day. Whoa, that's way too much! The AAP recommends no more than 4 oz. of juice per day. My kids all had troubles with constipation. I had to put dark Karo syrup in their bottles. Once they graduated to milk, they were generally OK. However, with one of my boys, I did mix up a "poop concoction" every day. Instead of apple or orange juice with his breakfast, he got a mixture of 2 oz. prune juice, 1 oz. apple juice and 1 oz. water. As long as he had that every day, he was fine. NOTHING worked with the third child though, so we had to go the Miralax route. This is before it was OTC. I would use that as a last resort, though. Best of luck to you! Try the prune juice - it's the most natural remedy and can't harm him.

Thank you for your coment. About the juice I did not know that and actually I was told by the nurse to give him all the licuids posible so he can be hydrated. I really don't like some of the things they tell me at that clinic guess the best thing for me to do is go to another clinic. I got some prume juice today and I'm going to start to give him a little tomorow to see if he likes it and if it works.

Sounds like you've gotten a lot of mixed info. My baby is 13 months now, and has been seeing a gastroenterologist for constipation since 4 months. In that time, this is what I have learned: The normal process of the colon is to squeeze the water out to hydrate the body before passing the stool. However, apple JUICE and prune juice naturally stay in the colon to help loosen the stool - they are the only juices that do this. Fiber helps absorb water in the colon to help loosen stool also, but if the body is dehydrated and takes the water out of the colon, fiber can actually make constipation worse. I have also learned that at least for my daughter, bananas, rice cereal, and applesauce are the worst for constipation. She has been on 8.5 mg of miralax in 6oz of formula every day since 7 mos. (Although we did 2 8.5 mg doses for the first three days to pass the blockage). Miralax was such a relief because I was able to just relax and feed my baby without her crying when she had a bowel movement! We are now weaning her from the miralax. First, to start the weaning process, the doctor had us give the miralax for 4 days, then skip 1 day, and repeat the cycle for a full month. Then we are to reduce it by one day each month. Right now we are 3 days on and 1 day off. I have also started giving her bran flakes cereal with apple juice every morning for breakfast, a little bit of sweet potatoes with all other meals, and grapes for snacks. This has helped tremendously. We have also started using 2% instead of formula and it has not seemed to be a problem. We have only had a problem two times in the last two months and both times were because she was given banana bread. I do have to be careful though...no more than 24oz of milk per day, and I try to get her to drink 4oz of juice or mix it with her food. Good luck!

Hi babykiwi21 I have so far I have tried the prume juice the apple juice and also massage and the juice those not work that mutch. I don't know the amount I have to give him so I will give him ones a days 1 to 2 oz of prume juice mixed with 6 or 7 oz of apple juice. And I also give him grape juice and oragen juice on some days. The milk makes no difference if it is 2% regular milk or whole lactose free milk. A lady gave him a tumy massage and he went in less than 30 minutes and at first it was hard and then it was normal but it was just for that day. I'm still wating to be able to be seen by his Dr. but still nothing hopefully one more week if nothing els gous wrong. I really want him to be ok again because it hurst me to see blood in his stool and also to see the balls I can just imagine what it might hurt. I don't know if it might be ok to give him miralax with out being told by his Dr. I guess I would call tomorow but I'm sure they are going to tell me to waint untill his appointment. Some times I think they really do not care but I hope that is not true. Thank you for you coment. Have a great day.
