On Yahoo this week, there was an article stating that Oprah is being accused of having medical professional on her show who have given dangerous or unhealthy medical advice. Oprah has alot of power so she needs to be careful what she sponsors or supports. Many people follow Oprah. They are fans and believe in what she represents. Having this much power she can really influence people and I do think she uses this to her advantage. SHe needs to be careful what she says and doesnt say. Do you think she is guilty of giving bad advice?

I know people follow her and take her like Bible but the thing is you gotta think for yourself. Oprah's just out there spouting off new ideas and concepts she has found, not everything works for everyone and if people follow her blindly without using their common sense, that's their problem not hers.

I agree, but I still think that when one KNOWS they have that kind of power & influence over people, they should be much more conscientious to do/say the right thing. I think Oprah has gotten to where she craves the "following" and the position of power she is in.

Oprah herself never gives any medical advice. She does have some very knowledgable medical professionals as guests but no-one is forced to take any medical advice without consulting with their own doctor first to see if it is safe for them to follow TV advice..

Thanks Lakota I do think you have a point about researching any advice people give you especially a celebrity.
Whiteheather you are correct in that its not Oprah directly. However she allows these people to appear on her show. If you have god like status like she does you have to research the guest's credentials in detail. She IS responsible for any/all views she allows to be heard on her show. Bottomline. Thanks guys. dl

If you're talking about the whole Suzanne Sommers thing, it was on MSN also. I'm not a big Oprah fan, so I'm kinda glad someone's calling her to task about it. I don't know if she does much research on her guests or just goes for the famous/flashy ones... I think people are probably starting to get sick of her.

I think she is very aware of the power she has and that she is not about to abuse it in anyway for any reason. She would be very careful to use whatever resources needed to test and research anything she puts her name to. There would be no expense spared...that's how she got to where she is...that's WHO she is. I think we will always be able to depend on Oprah's advice. We might not always agree with her on some subjects but I don't think she would ever give any wrong advice.

I do agree that Oprah has alot of power. However I do feel that she's not stupid either. She knows how to get people to do what she wants to without coming right out and saying so. THats how she got where she's at today. THe power of persuasion. We as individuals have to make sure that even thought she's telling us about something she supports, we must still research it to makesure its okay for us. I never said she intentionally gave wrong advice. Its reported that the doctors she was backing had had several investigations and other things that were unbecoming to them. I think its likely to happen in every celebrity who has a talk show's life. dl

eh..i don't put too much overvalue on what anybody in the media says, oprah or not.
i mean,of course they're going to promote their point of view on things, especially if they stand to benefit one way or another by doing so.

Finally! Someone finally agrees with me. I only want people to think that maybe Oprah isnt perfect. Maybe before you follow her every word you should check it out with your physician. If you dont check things out to make sure they're compatible for your body, then you're asking for trouble. Thanks friend. dl

Sounds to me like her guest speaker would be the one who has given the bad advice in this case. I don't watch her show any more as I got quite disgusted with her. I feel she is using her "influence" in ways she shouldn't be. I appreciate her generosity and some of the wonderful things she's done for people. But I feel she is affecting people far too much in areas that matter most in life, and not for the better. She has practically started her own religion that she may call Christianity, but it is so steeped in falsehoods (as compared to the Bible) that it may as well be considered a cult. Just my own personal opinion. No one should have that much power/influence over others.

Okay fling wet noodles at me, but I do happen to be a fan of Oprah's and she most certainly did not practically start her own religion...if you're talking about the time she had Eckhart Tolle's webcast to discuss A New Earth, what Tolle was saying was actually based on philosophical concepts that have been around for centuries and of which I've studied all along. So what he was saying was nothing really new if you had read any philosophically related materials.

No wet noodles! You're entitled to your opinion and I respect that. And no, my feelings on this have nothing to do with Tolle and that webcast as I haven't even seen that. It's been quite some time now, but at one point I went to her website and read some of her writings on what she believed and in my opinion, it is skewed from what the Bible says. So, I choose to believe the Bible over Oprah, and I don't see where they are in alignment!

I have watched quite a few of her shows and yes, her style of speaking and presenting a show is quite influential to people who like to eat her every word. I have never seen her giving any advise per se, she rather moderates and motivates and influences her guests to speak their mind in a very engaging and entertaining way. For people who lap up her show, they can take that as coming from her, but for many others, they are free to decide for themselves, disseminate the info and check it out and then either go for it or discard it.
What I can say is her episodes are entertaining talk shows.

It really doesn't matter whether Oprah gives good or bad advice. Yes, she is very influential but she is not responsible for someone else's actions. She is sharing her thoughts and opinion but she's not pushing them to anyone. I believe majority of her audience are already adults. They should know what to take as good advice and ignore the bad once. We are all given our own minds to use. Why should we just follow someone else's?

You are so wrong! Oprah does not give advice. Her guests give advice or their opinion. So why should she be careful? No-one is forced to taken any-one's advice (even doctors can be wrong). I do not watch all the Oprah show but I do watch every week when she has Dr. Oz as a guest and I have learned so much from him. Now he is even going to have his own show and I shall definitely be watching.

could you please enlighten me, what dangerous and unhealthy medical advice she supposedly give, I have not read that particular item in yahoo, do they have given any example for that, thanks..
on Oprah's side yes you are right she or her staff must make a thorough research before letting her guests make any medical advice

Not at all! She is not the one persay giving advice it is the doctors or professionals that are giving the advice. However, everyone is different and of course you would need to consult your own doctor to make sure certain things would be ok for you to do or take. Come on people its all common sense. Let's not try and put blame on Oprah.

I guess in this case it was someone she acknowledged as an authority on something that gave the bad advice. That happens sometimes and when it comes to your health you should always consult with your doctor about anything that carries a risk. You can even do some research yourself on the internet to find out about some product or method to see what opinions, reviews and critiques are about it. For general advice about normal problems, well advice is advice and many people have different thoughts. Oprah is much like Dear Abbey.

I dont think Oprah gives bad advice intentionally. I do think she realizes the power she has over people. Lots of men and women really look up to her and her opinions. I think this is a situation where no matter who we look up to we must always get multiple opinions for any problem we may have. We must always let ourselves be the judge of what is best for us. dl

I strongly disagree to that. I believe that Oprah is one responsible TV personality who only has the best intentions for everybody especially to her audience.
What she does is she seeks advice of Medical people such as Dr. Memet Oz with regard to questions regarding people's health. I don't think she will risk her reputation by giving her audience information which will not be useful to them.

I think Oprah made a mistake. We all do. Even Celebrities. I also think If she likes something and wants people to like it she can do it. Its a very serious thing, when you have all that power. She has to be careful who and what she wants to promote. dl

I do not know a whole lot about Oprah anymore. I used to wath her show quite frequently but I don't anymore. I just do not like the way she has let her fortune go to her head and she is biased alot of times too even though she claims not to be.

She is not very good at picking people to take advice from or supporting trustworthy people. She has recommended at least two authors, one of which was a plagarist and one a complete fraud. She made a big deal of establishing a school in Africa and then it almost instanly was full of child molestors.
