On the beach on my 40th birthday

Last year, my husband surprised me with a trip to Nova Scotia for my 40th birthday. Not only was this a surprise, but two of our best friends showed up two days after we were there! My husband and I had a private cottage and our friends had their own private cottage next door. The landscape was set on an ocean. We had an outdoor fireplace where we watched the beautiful sunsets and listened to the sounds of the lobster fisherman in their boats. The best part was the day we visited a different beach, a short walk away. We brought our lunch and enjoyed the fantastic view of the white sand, the green blue water and the only sound we heard besides ourselves was the waves. There wasn't a soul there on this mile and a half stretch of beach! I couldn't believe it. Then, a man and a woman showed up in a red pick up truck. The woman brought out a lawn chair and the man hobbled out with two crutches. He made his way to the lawn chair, sat down, and just looked at the ocean. The woman approached us, smiling and waving. She introduced herself and explained that her husband had just had knee surgery, but loved the view here so much, that she brought him here, crutches and all. We talked to her for quite awhile. She learned that it was my 40th birthday and wished me a happy birthday. She then went for a long stroll on the beach by herself. She returned about and hour later, approached me with one hand closed over something in the other hand. She gave me a sand dollar she had found on her walk and wished me a very happy 40th. I gave her a hug, said thanks so much and then said, " I just said to my husband this morning, "I wish I could find a sand dollar on the beach. I have looked all my life, and have never found one" and now you just gave me one. This is the most perfect birthday I have ever had". She said "you're welcome" and then walked back to her husband. What nice people! What a wonderful time....

What an excellent birthday surprise. Before your friends showed up in the cottage next door, had he told you they were coming? Or was that another surprise to make your birthday even better? I love finding neat stuff on the beach. I have never found a whole sand dollar, except maybe at Hilton Head Island in South Carolina. You are not aloud to take anything off of the beach there. Which is ok I guess, because that way people are always seeing the nature. I saw a number of starfish while I was at that beach. And there were people walking around putting the starfish back into the water. I hope all of your birthdays can be just as wonderful as your 40th!

thanks. I did find out that some friends were coming on the day that we went, but I didn't know who it was until I saw them. It was so much fun. Hard to believe it was almost a year ago, as I approach 41 in eight days.
