My hubby's birthday is coming, I'm thinking about making one at home or go to Friend'y's to get one, I would really like to make one but I never made one, I doubt I can make any good ones or even if I can make it a cake shape.
Can you give me some ideas?

yes i would really love to make a birthday cake for my loved ones....but can't do that as i don;t have the right equipentments to do that.....like a oven to bake it....and giving it to the local bakery is risky as they may burn the cake.....being a culinary student i know alot of cake recipes and infact have made alot in my college and at my work place....but making it at home is not possible......so i buy cake from a bakery.....or i buy a sponge and decorate it with cream....and other garnishes......but making cake is really easy.....one just needs to add the ingredients in right proportion.....
to make white chocolate and date cake you need 135 gm butter, 175 gm white chocolate, 125 gm sugar, 4 eggs, 200 gm flour, 1tsp baking powder, 100 gm dates.....
first melt the chocolate....once the chocolate is melted add butter to it...and whisk it.....then take the egg and sugar on a double boiler and mix it till it thickens up.....then add the chocolate and better mixture...add in the flour and baking powder then add in the walnuts and mix it.....pour it in a butter paper lined cake tin at bake it at 180 c for 30 to 35 mins......this will give you a half kg cake.....just try it and see....

Hi mermaid...Lucky for you there are many cake forms that you can just purchase. All you have to do is prepare the cake mix - whether you're making it from scratch or from a store bought mix - and pour it into the pan. Then just decorate it when it's done! You can look on ebay for ideas if you like. However I don't know how to make an ice cream cake like you would get in Friendly's so you're on your own there...good luck with the cake!

I would do both but i do know that making a cake comes from the heart and it takes time and effort and your special someone would love it more than a bought one. I know that many arts and supply stores like michaels have cake supplies you can buy such as certain shapes and ideas that you can choose from. You would really need to look online at certain cakes if you want to decorate it i would just make the cake as the box says then just put icing on it as its pretty easy to do taht way and you can get the sugar letters and add those on there saying happy birthday as it comes from the heart and it may be the easies way out.

The reason why I didn't look up the recipes and try to make is actually because my hubby is not a big fan of cake so if I order an ice cream cake and bought it home, he might be happier? So I'm still thinking about it. Thanks for your ideas! :-)

I always make my cakes from a box. Make sure and flour your cake pan though or your cake will stick and then you either have to make a new one or try to cover your mistake with icing (which isn't really that hard). Start with something simple, if you continue to make the cakes yourself you can always attempt something harder later on. Also making cakes for the ones you love shows them that you care enough to spend time doing something special for them, and if they love you back this will mean a lot to them.

I've always just bought a cake for my hubby and my son. I've never made them a handmade one before. When I was younger I made a clown cake for my dad for his birthday. I got the idea out of a book I had. You can go online and get ideas for different kinds of cakes to make. I'm sure he would love a homeade cake just as good as a store bought one.

I like to try my hand at making a birthday cake for people that I'm close to. I'm not very good at baking, as a matter of fact I don't like baking at all because I'm not very good at it. I love to cook but baking is totally different for me. Even though I'm not good at it though I get a cake mix from the store and bake that and then frost and decorate it myself. They don't look that great but they sure do taste good. I think that when people have done that for me no matter how it looks or tastes I really enjoy that more than something that would be purchased from the store because they took the time and put in the effort to do something personal for me.
If we have a big party though like a graduation or a wedding or bridal or baby shower then generally we order the cake from aa local bakery or store so it will look really nice and there will be a bunch of people there who we don't know and may not appreciate a homemade cake that isn't as perfect as a professional one. When we get those I like to get the ones with the buttercream frosting because when we order a cake the regular frosting is always so heavy and tastes like you are eating nothing but pure sugar.

Hi Mermaidivy,
This year I made my husbands birthday cake. Last year he wanted pie's so I went out to this local restaurant that is known for making excellent pies and I purchased a few pie's for his Birthday. For my son's birthday I mostly order a cute kids cake with whipped icing at Walmart, but on my son's last birthday my friend made him a cake from a cake mix. If you are wanting to make your hubby a cake but afraid of it not coming out right then you can buy one of those cake mixes at the store. I usually buy one of those when I make birthday cakes at home because they are very easy and quick to make and they come out super moist and there are a lot of flavor's to choose from. I also buy the cream cheese whipped icing that is already made so all I have to do is open the lid and start icing. The cake mixes and premade icings at the store are very affordable also. I know at the store I shop at I can buy one box of cake mix and premade icing for under $5 . Just make sure you have eggs, cooking oil,non-stick cooking spray, whipping mixer & a cake pan. ... They are super easy to make and if you follow the easy directions correctly you will have a delicious cake ready to eat within a few hours. These are the two cakes ( cup cakes also)made with a box cake mix.If you are still uncertain about making a cake mix kit then maybe you can ask a friend to come over and help you make it?
My best friend made it for my son on his last birthday some months back.My son wanted a Pacman video game theme for his birthday, so me, my husband and my friend made him a custom made Pacman theme, cake & decorations for his party. Good Luck!

Well, if you think you can do it, then it would be great if you can make one for your hubby. It would make the cake more special. Of course, I am not telling that if you buy one, it would not be special. The thing is, when you make one, it has the personal touch. So whatever you decide, I wish you best.

An interesting conversation topic as just recently learnt how to make cake! I had previously never baked a cake until around a month ago and then I sort of thought to myself, well why not give it a go! I was really pleases as I made a chocolate cake for an older brother's birthday and turns out everyone loved it! Why not make a practice one first before his birthday and then if it turns out well make one on the birthday? I am sure he will appreciate your efforts!

As much as I would love to make a birthday cake for a loved one, I am a fairly busy person and don't really have the time and energy to devote to baking the cake..So I would probably buy a cake and I would make sure that it's his/her favorite type of cake.
you should check the net for some cake recipes..there are tons of them out there. I'm sure you can make a great cake...Good luck to you! :)

As a mother of 5 and wife of 20 years, come this August. I always make my loved ones Birthday Cakes. It started 20 years ago on my hubbys birthday after we got married. We got married in Aug. of 89 and he had his Birthday in Jan. I decided to make him a Birthday cake from scratch. I was so excited to do this for him. Well being a young 20 year old bride, and we were pinching our pennies, we had no butter, just margarine, I didn't think that would matter. Well I learned rather quickly that when making frosting you can not substitute margarine for butter. The frosting was all runny, I was soo upset I cried. My Hubby being the good man he is said he loved the cake and he ate it anyway,(it looked horrible to me). To this day he says it was the best birthday cake he has ever had, he knew I made it with love. I make all my childrens Birthday cakes, maybe not from scratch, but I make them and decorate them, my decorating skills have improved dramatically. Homemade cakes are always made with love, and they are special to the birthday person. You can give them their own character. I prefer to make the cake rather than buying them.

every year I make my husband a carrot cake. The first year it took forever because I did it completely from scratch, but now I cut corners and still get a great cake.
My suggestion is to find a recipie that sounds good and try it out before the big day so that you have an idea of what you are doing.

It depends. If my family is throwing a party for the person cause its some mildstone birthday(16th, 21st,...) we will buy a cake, but if it is just a regular old b-day we usually just make a cake.

Buy one for his birthday this year... and then learn how to make a cake and surprise him with a birthday cake made by yourself on his next birthday... I'm sure in one year's time, you'll be able to know how to make a delicious one... practice makes perfect and you have one year to practice and master baking a cake... not only for your husband but for your whole family too.

Hii,
Well i think try to make a cake yourself. Even if it turns out to be bad he will enjoy it. If they come to know that you given so much time for them and even if the end result is not good they will appreciate it. It will show your love to him. So my advice would be prepare a cake with a pinch of love and care. Happy Mylotting.

Its, like I also don't know how make a cake but, i would really like to make one. Specially when it comes to our loved ones. That really gives a feeling of happiness to them, and we feel associated. but since i'm unable to make one, I rather like to buy some new surprising flavor, which they would like. and that to from a good shop.

I would make one even if you aren't a big cooker or baker. If you don't want to make one from scratch, bake from a box and ice it escpecially for him. Write something that is special to ya'll two. It's much more fun than just buying one and it has a special personalized touch. If it doesn't turn out well it'll be something funny you can share and he will still know you thought about him and tried to do something special. :-)
