Well I tell you what after 10 years of never bearing any fruit both our plum trees have outdone themselves! We just canned 12 pints of plum jam. We have enough plums ripening to do atleast 24 more pints! Yikes that is a whole lot of plum jam. I refuse to let good plums go to waste so a canning I will be! I love the flavor of the plum jam it is yummy! Don't know why this year is different and we got so many! I will post pics on responses tomorrow as it is very late and I don't feel like taking pics right now.

Hi Sweetdesign, Nice to hear somebody has a good crop. I have 2 damson trees. That is a small dark plum that is ready in early Autumn here. In Europe it is normal for plum trees to have alternate good and bad years. However this is the second year where I have almost no fruit and the previous 2 years I had more than I could cope with. I freeze a lot of the damsons, when I have them, and then later stew them or make damson crumble. Very tasty! Just remove the stones and put the fruit in plastic bags. They will keep in the freezer for at least 2 years.

Oh I forgot to mention I have enough jam made to fill another 7 pints but I have ran out of jars! Atleast I know it will keep in the fridge for two weeks till I can get some jars.

I have never tasted plum jams before. Although I know that you can always use any fruit in season to make jams. I think it is a waste just to see the plums rot on the ground. Good for you, you were able to find use for them. I never found any other use of plums than being eaten raw on a tree or dipped in salt.

Maybe in the last ten years the plums have been wiped out by cold weather at the wrong time, or perhaps the extra yard and garden work you have been doing has stimulated them.I am thrilled that you are getting the fruits of the labor.

I love plums, but I've always had mediocre crops on my trees. I will also dry them out and make prunes with them. The trick is to keep the birds well away from your trees, or you won't get a thing from them.

Hi. sweetdesign. I have never tasted plum jam before. I hope that you enjoy eating your fresh plum jam. I wished that I could taste what plum jam tastes like though. I also would like to see any pictures that you have of the plum jam that you have made. Happy plum jam eating, sweetdesign!

Sounds like you're going to be eating plums for a very long time. I wonder if some supermarkets would buy some plums or the jam from you. It would be a great way to make some extra money.
