I used to have a workmate, he eats very loudly and rudely because heis just a rude person and when he had lunch box in the office, it was quiet so it was especially loud. I thought it was so gross... even I didn't look at him, it sounded disgusting... What do you think?

Hello mermaidivy,
I think it is not good to eat 'loudly' but whenever I have meal with my Japanese office mates, it seems that it is normal for them to eat and slurp.... you know what I mean. If others, I will think that it is very inappropriate to do that while eating but I heard that according to some Japanese, it is some kind of act to show that they like what are being served for them - means that the food is delicious. I don't really know whether it is a fact or not...

Yes, it is Japanese's custom, when they eat soup noodle, they slurp the noddle.

Not really gross but more like annoying. Especially in a workplace, i don't think that's right. I think your workmate is just too thickskinned to care so it's not an issue to him. I guess he doesn't care much about her image. I think the best yo can do is to stay far away from him during lunch to avoid some disgusting sounds or whatever. He's lacking in proper eating etiquette, that's all.

Some people grew up with wrong habits. Some are not aware of their way of acting when eating. I know one guy who eats like a pig all the time. He also eats very fast, close to his plate with funny noise...I feel so sorry for him, but I could not be close to him when he eats...I used to work with him....

It bothers me too, when somebody eats loudly. It really does bother me. I can't stand it. Don't ask me why, but it just does disturb me a lot. When someone is making a lot of noise, while eating, it just disturbs me. I try to ignore it as much as I can, but there are a lot times, when it just doesn't work. It's just one of those things that can get on someone's nerves, like it gets on mine.

Yes, loud eating disturbs me too, I suppose that is another reason to take small bites and chew slowly... and some people wonder why they never get a second date :P

It is of course rude, but maybe he just eats like that. One who doesn't have table manners just doesn't learn them. Try teaching him or telling him he's his eating chaotically and maybe that will help out the situation, you know? And to clarify by my opinion I think you mean he eats with his mouth open making noises and you can hear the food getting crunched up?

I really think some people are born like that even in my office one of my colleagues' she eats like this, but not too loudly when compare to my uncle. OMG I can't watch him while eating food, he is really yakk. when he talks it will come out of his mouth and that's disgusting. I just try to comeout of that place.
