In America, garage and yard sales are very popular during the warmer months. Some peole have them every year. I have had 4 in my entire life. Each time, though, I've accumulated many things to sell, so the profits were good. The first one made $80, good money for the time. The last one I had was 5 years ago, and I made $900 dollars to put in savings. Have you ever had a garage or yard sale? Did you find it to earn as much or even more extra money than you had hoped it would?Karen

Well, here in Brazil it's not usual and I think they will think it's a weird thing to do in a garage, but personaly I think it's a interesting idea. Even so I think here it will not work as expected.

We call them "Garage sells" in America but people usually have them in the yard. I plan to actually do mine in the garage just to avoid the elements.

Hello Lam, I think different cultures have their own unique "popular" things. If garage or yard sales are not common in your country, then they might not go over well at all should someone try it. Then again, it might start a new trend! Thank you for responding :) Karen

Hello my friend PeacefulWmn9 Ji, Wll,my hubby never allows anything to be disposed-off, as his rememberences/memories are attatched in them. He will wait till they perish by themselves. We have some boxes more tha 100 yrs old (from his graet grand mother).I have my crockery since 55 yrs, though we never use. My hubby is using a dress for more than 20 yrs. Recently, he kept his watch after using it for almost 30 yrs, to be used by his grand son, when he reaches 15 yrs (another 12 yrs to go) We have sufficient funds and do not require at the cost of our memories. May god bless You and have a great time.

Hello my friend PeacefulWmn9 Ji, You are absolutely right to support me. It was only yesterday, my hubby went to get some mustered oil for my cooking use, he carried an empty bottle, while handling sales-woman dropped it, my hubby just told to handle carefully as bottle was related in my kitchen for more than 40 yrs now. It belonged to time, when I did not join my hubby. So he treats all things very carefully. May God bless you and have a great time.

That's a great thing karen! Here, it's not popular. How I wish it to be! We have a whole lot of things which are relatively new and in good condition. We keep them in the attic and eventually give them away. The clothes I give to an orphanage but other stuffs just go ashtray! When are you giving your next? Do take a snap and share with us.

Hi Mim...I think these kinds of sales are a good way to earn extra, but they are not popular in every country. I admire that you give to charity. That is what I do with things not sold at a sale. I am not sure when I'll have another, but I will take pictures :D Best wishes, Karen

Wow, that's a nice chunk of change! I personally haven't had one, though I check them out on the weekends, but I've been thinking about doing it. I suppose after hearing the possible profits, I should get busy and start collecting things. I have a lot of items in good condition which I'd like to sell. Thanks for the inspiration.

Here in the region we call it Ukay ukay. And I admit you can get great, nice clothes for a cheaper cost if you know how to choose. I wash the dress that I bought a many times and disinfect it to remove any bad odor or bacteria it accumulated.

The bargains are definitely there. Like you, I wash and disinfect such items, since I do not know where they've been or who has worn them before. A good habit when purchasing used clothing :) Thank you for your input. Karen

Shopping garage or yard sales is a really good way to find bargains for things you'd buy anyway. And having one is a great way to make some money from things you no longer use or need. :)

We dont live in an area that is good for yard sales. But sometimes if someone is having a yard sale that we know they will let us join in to sell stuff as well. Our last yard sale sucked. The woman who let us come join her didn't put signs up around untill around eight. THen she decided to have it in her carport which is practically in her backyard so its out of site. I only sold one thing.

Ahhh, garage sales. I don't think I have had one for almost twenty years. I think I made about $200 for that sale. At the time, that was a lot of money also. My daughter was thinking that we should have a garage sale but give everything away for free. She thought that might help people who cannot afford even the resale shops.

Hi Karen...and God did I ever. I swore I would never have another one as long as I lived. As soon as everyone in the family got wind I was thinking about having one they all called and ask about bringing things over they would like to get rid of and would I put them in my yard sale as they didn't really have enough to have one themselves. Oh what a mistake. By the time the day of the yard sale came I think I had something that belonged to every member of my family and no help from anyone. Everyone had a previous appointment or was working or had some excuse so that left me to man the crowd. And what a crowd. To this day I don't know how I got through it and kept things as straight as I could as far as who's money was who's. It was very successful but I had trouble getting the family members that had dropped things off to come and get theri items that did not sale so I called the charity truk and we loaded everything up on it and if there was something that shouldn't have went...OH WELL!!!!...they were asked to come pick it up and didn't and I was tired of it being in my way. After all that is why I had a yard sale was to get rid of clutter. flutterby

Ack! What a nightmare! They should have pitched, and at the very least, come for their left-over things. The sales are hard work...worth the income and the clearing out of clutter...but truly hard work!

I would think depending in the area you live in? people here take their stuff to flea-markets/swap-meets. most of the time its a gamble. I guess advertizing would hurt. putting signs in corner directing people, and sometimes some local radio stations advertize for free. A garage sale is also very usefull, you get rid of old things, make extra room in the home, and you make some money back on things you bough previously. Very good way get bigger and better things =P

See? You named some excellent reasons why garaged sales, and yes, flea markets are positive things, both for sellers and buyers. They are even more useful in today's struggling economy. Thank you for offering your insights :) Karen

I think the trick to these things in marketing and location. The more people know about it, think that it's going to be big, and has an easy location to get to, the better I think you can do. Also having items that people are looking for. There must be a top 10 list of items people go shopping for at garage sales. I'm thinking furniture is somewhere on the list.

I did two yard sales at my home last year and earned about $300 combined. I went to a flea market this year and made that in 4 hours of my time. I was shocked. I do alot of couponing and sell extra stuff that we won't use. However I found at my yard sale none of my household items sold but at the flea market people bought just about everything. It really has me looking around my house for more stuff that I don't need. We have way to much stuff and if I can make an extra buck then good for us! I also sell items on Craigslist and have always done well. I will only meet people however in well populated places and I always take my husband. My goal for next year is to pay for a Disney vacation with selling my stash (as my husband call my coupon stuff) and things we don't need or have outgrown.

Oh, you did really well. Flea markets are another great way to get rid of unused things and earn the money for extras. Keep up your great work and I hope your Disney vacation plans come true :) Karen

We have had several yard sales in the past, and one a few months ago. We only made about 25.00 from the last one, but we had the stuff priced very cheaply because the aim was to clean out the attic, which we did, so I would say it was a success. We live in the country now, so not as many people stop, but when we lived in town several years ago we had a lot of business and used to have a sale almost every other week. My uncle would pick up furniture and other stuff that people were throwing out, and we usually mad a good profit.

These are good ways to clean out attics, and yes, some people have them every week or two and do well. I agree, it would be harder to get as many customers in the country. Thank you for responding :)

That is great. Keep on each year, and perhaps you'll reach the 500.00 goal. I was shocked the year mine earned 900.00. It made for a beautiful start to a savings account. Karen

I have had some garage sales and most of the time I make good money. I am trying to plan one now. There are things in my garage in containers and boxes than I plan to sell. I have been purging stuff from my house in order to declutter it and lighten the load some. Some things were valuable and we sold on Craigslist and EBay and made some good money off of them. When the sale is over, everything goes to charity. I wanted to sell it anyway, so there is no use of bringing it back in the house.

A wise way to go...the most valuable things on Ebay or Craig's List, the others for the garage or yard sale, and like you, I take the rest to charity. Also, you are correct in saying it is an excellent way to de-clutter! Karen
