Why can't they just get along?

It's been almost a month since we got a new cat, and she and the old cat still don't get along. Cat #1 hisses and growls at cat #2, who chases her and slaps her. We tried introducing them after each had smelled something with the other's scent. We thought they wouldn't be as alien to each other that way, but it didn't seem to work. Now I'm sitting here behind a closed door with the first cat while the other is in another room. I hope we don't have to keep them separated forever.

My cats tolerate each other but neither one really cares for the other and its been a couple of years. Sometimes they still chase, fight, hiss and slap but its not a constant, anymore.

That's good to know. If they start to behave around each other and then have a spat, maybe it'll be over in a minute. Hmmm, reminds me of some people. Well, the older cat thinks she's a person anyway.

I've;had problems with cats getting along in the past. Usually it seem like if they are not raised together they will not be able to get along. The best it seems like they will learn to tolerate each other, they will probably not become the best of friends. It is not likely anyway.

As long as they tolerate each other it'll be okay. I can't imagine them ever curling up and going to sleep together, but if next winter's as cold as the last one they might.

I've noticed a lot of cats get along better if you let them meet "natural". Putting one in front of the other automatically feels like a confrontation to them. Eventually they will get along, let them figure out their roles in each other's lives.

The new one is more interested than the old one. We were going to keep them separated until she'd gotten used to living here, but she scouted her out and tried to play with her. The old cat isn't interested in playing.
