House broken dog but still goes in the house when we leave. Is this a bad habit?

I have a small to midsize dog that is house broken or so I thought. She holds it and we take her out all the time. But the minute we leave to go somewhere and we get back we notice she has gone on a certain rug or in only one room. I don't understand. How can we break her of this and get the rugs cleaned so she doesn't go back to that area? I have tried vinegear and rug cleaner. Any suggestions?

It sounds like she's letting you know she doesn't like being left behind. You might try putting her in a kennel when you're gone. Do you have a large carrier or kennel for her? Make it just large enough for her and a water dish. After awhile, she'll get the idea and should be okay to leave her out again. If she starts up again, she's not liking that being left home alone thing.

I trained my female pit to go in the bathroom. She pees in front of the toilet. One way that I got her to do this is by taking her in the bathroom a few times a day and say pee-pee. I found that when we left the house, she would pee out of anger. I also started to leave bones on the floor when we left. I would tell her good girl and leave the bones. She would eat one while we were gone, and when we came home they would all be on the floor still, I would check the whole house for pee, if she followed me then she was good, if she laid down and cried, then she pee'd. I would then proceed to tell her go ahead (if she was good) to eat her treats. If you are gone for an extremely long period of time it is only natural for them to not be able to hold it any longer. Another option is that when you leave, put your dog in a cage. I hate doing this to my puppies, but it trained them after a while not to pee where you stay! There is also floor cleaner with baking soda in it to remove the odor from the carpet and an oxy-clean pet carpet cleaner for the rugs also. Good luck.

Sounds like separation anxiety. She's getting upset when you leave. I had a dog that did that. I'd let her out she'd go, then leave for five minutes come home and there was a nice pile in front of the door.
It might difficult if the dog is older, but try crate training the dog. I know it sounds cruel, but it's really not. I've learned over the years that's the best way to keep a dog out of mischief and pottying all over the house when you're gone. It's safer for the dog as well. If that's not an option, consider restricting the dog to one room with gates or closing doors. If you have a room without carpeting-usually kitchens, that's a lot better then them pottying on a carpet-and much easier to clean. Good luck!

Your dog might be stressed by you leaving. Have you talked to the vet about this problem? Have you tried crating the dog while you are gone.

I think that dogs do this to let us know that we didn't take them along and they don't like being left alone. Amonia works well to stop animals from returning to the same spot where they have gone to the bathroom. I think that the amonia smell burns their nose a little and they no longer smell their own scent, so they stop going there.
I might suggest buying puppy pads to lay out when you leave and hopefully, this will help solve the problem of your dog messingup your carpet. I know that they can be trained to only go on the pads and I also know that they are absorbent enough that it won't leak through onto your carpet.

Oh man I have a dog he is like a mix of Winn Dixie and a Yorkie and we got him from the shelter and he had this one rug in the house that he would just go and go on. So one day I had enough of cleaning it up so I ended up having to get rid of the rug because one dog smelled it and then it was like marking Territory. Also did you get he from the shelter she may of been abused. Every time you take her to go out side stand there with her and reward her with a treat so she knows she did good. You might have to put the rug up for a little bit till she is house broken. Good Luck

I have a little mixed chihuahua she is almost two years old and she still gous inside the house. I have tried the scaryng with the news paper were you make noice with it and act like you are going to hit them. Also the viniger and that just made my house smell worst I even got the special blankets and nothing she would actually sleep on them insted of going on them. We don't like to live her out side and she sleeps with my daughter we love her but sometimes I feel like giving her away. There are times during the day that I let her go outside so she can go and sometimes she will but there are other times when she bearly comes into the house and pees anywere. I don't know what to do with her so now most of the time my daughter will clean it up because I told her that I was tierd and she told me that she was going to clean it. She those not do it right and I endup cleaning after her but I still let her try so can lurn that a pet is responsbility. Well good luck finding something that would help you. I'm sorry I was not able to tell you something that has worked for me.
