What do you think of the following saying? The man who reads well is...

the thinker - The man who reads well is the man who thinks well, who has a background for opinion and a stand for judgment.

"The man who reads well is the man who thinks well, who has a background for opinion and a stand for judgment". I think that there is much truth in the saying above. Please state your opinion and support it with some examples. I truly appreciate your responses to it in advance. Take care.

Hi William Knowledge begets knowledge that excites our thinking pattern. We think, ponder and start to think in or against the line of what we read. That's beautiful. Reading nurtures our dormant or silly brains and. It's like food for mind, body and soul. There is no substitute to reading. It could be anything - comics, newspaper strips, cartoon, book, journal - they are bound to create an effect in us. To every action there is an opposite and equal reaction. Reading simply validates that. Thanks. Congratulations on your 12000! Great feat! I am so happy dear.

I think its motive and objective of saying is similar to my poem for "Once Spoken Never Broken" URL http://file2.ws/poem4 OK let us go step by step of it, for what I said about; motive and objective. I delve into that world of saying and cinch it carries three (3) motives(Item 1, 2, & 3) and an objective(Item 4). Here we go; 1. The man who reads well is "The man" in this who words of saying is very subjective to attitude and not gender. The word "THE" means it could be anybody regardless of gender refers to "MAN" which mirrors the strong guts possessed by an individual. It means for the attitude of "a man". READS means the soul belonging with fey property. 2. The man who thinks well "THINKS" refers to mind and not brain. 3. Who has a background for opinion, and "BACKGROUND" is the brain experiences the connection with soul, that is why it is able to produce "OPINION" relevant to fey property which capable to illustrate vision into sight focus on one life subject. 4. A stand for judgment "A STAND" which is singular means a faculty of tutelary power supports the decision making and it reflects as the judgment. AN EXAMPLE; In our daily life in making an imperative decision which is very futuristic, especially, its beneficial value can be obtained in the next 10 or 20 years(let say), we have to call a meeting and our committee members are our own; soul, mind, brain, blood, nerves, ears, eyeballs, nose, mouth, skin, and the whole set of our physical; all of ours aver in making a conclusion to be an absolute final decision. Then, once spoken never broken.

It depends really. If he's a man who loves reading at the same time prefers to quote each writer instead of thinking for himself isn't doing any justice to his life. Why? He's a mere copycat or a parrot being dictated by what he reads. But if he's a man who likes reading and is able to relate himself to what he reads at the same time formulates his own ideas and uses these 'readings' as guides instead of dictators, well perhaps that's better. You see, you can form your own idea even if you're not a bookworm. Life teaches you to formulate your own ideas. So from time to time, leave the book be, live your life!

It is so true that formulating our own ideas while reading instead of being a mere copycat or parrot makes a person a great reader as well as a great thinker. Thank you for the wonderful response, dear laydee.

I do think that a person who can read well is able to comprehend things better and therefore maybe would be better able to state an objectionable opinion of certain things. To read well would mean not only to be able to read the words but comprehend them as well. It just goes to reason. I do think this saying has some meaning. Does it mean that the person that is well-read is automatically right? NO. I know some very well-read and intelligent people that I feel their judgement on certain matters is off. Sometimes emotions cloud good judgement no matter how much a person really knows.

Hi friend williamjisir, as always your discussion is of good quality and it gives pleasure to post reply to them. There is nothing truer than this saying. When we remained a child we were not as we are now. Reading has an important role to play in the change that occurs in a human being. A question may arise whether those who cannot read are not thinkers? I think, in this saying READING is used in a much broader sense. Learning through the study of nature and from observation of different things are also included in it. So as a person goes on reading he accumulates the capacity to judge things by comparing with other things. As one goes on reading like this thinking about the subject continues in the brain and these different types of thinking ultimately makes every human being a thinker - a better thinker. One accumulates the knowledge to support or go against any idea. Even though one may not have crystal clear conception on any item, but an overall idea can be formed based on the earlier reading. I cannot exactly recall but I have read that human brain remians most active when reading compared to any other activities. For example, whenever we talk with an unknown person over any subject, the moment he/she talks on it, we can have a fairly good idea, what kind of a reader/thinker he/she is. Good lotting

It is a good question to be raised as to whether those who can not read are not thinkers. I did not think too much of this, but I quite agree with you that we have different ways of learning, either from the study of nature and from observation of different things or from reading books or such. I like your reasonable response that it very convincing, arkadeb. Good day to you, friend.

TRUE! Just think of it this way, How can you state an opinion if you are not thinking? Right? And how can you get that opinion if you do not read? Reading will basically and your knowledge and so as with experience. Both go hand in hand.

it is true in some sense but not always... it really depends on what "reads well" and "thinks well" mean... it is very subjective depending on individuals... i had encountered lots of knowledgeable people who can't make a wise decision and so sorry to say but they are stupid... they might hold a professor degree but to me they still have no brain... and i had seen the opposite of this as well... people with no degree but are smarter and able to make a wise decision... this is what i mean by not everybody who "reads well" (knowledgeable) can "thinks well" (make a wise decision)... take care and have a nice day...

Reading is the source of knowledge and wisdom. Without knowledge and wisdom, we are not much different from other creatures on earth. Therefore, if we are keeping a good habit of reading good materials, we are equipping ourselves with one of the most powerful thing in the world, which could then help us in our job or daily life. I have been investing in the stock market two years ago, but keep on losing money. I didn't have any idea of my failure. But, until then, my friend recommend some books on investment. I found that I was so poor in knowledge of the economy and exchange, after reading it. Then only, I realized the foolish mistakes that I have made and now I gained back the confidence to continue my trading and investment journey. That's why reading is very important because we can get the essential knowledge from the books or reference.

That's why learning and reading is a never ending goal. We will lack behind once we stopped reading or learning. I hope you will be successful in career and other aspects in life by acquiring knowledge through reading as well. Happy mylotting always!

Hi William, I think that will depend on what he reads, and how he reads. Wonder how are you going to judge "read well", or "think well", too vague to judge. Even a foolish person can make world scattering discovery sometimes. I doubt anyone who reads comic very well, can think logically. And I doubt anyone who reads biological textbooks well, can understand the deeper spiritual truth in holy writings. So I think "reads well" and "thinks well" must be applied within a certain context.

Reading and thinking - reading, thinking, develops skills
Hi williamjisir! Not all men like this ability. That if he reads well and more he also thinks well. READING is very important to anybody and helps to develop our skills in thinking, speaking and reasoning. Not all individual has a power of thinking clever as what he has also read but there is, only few. Depends of their I.Q as person of what level he is in what he reads that he can also share, speak it out and do some reasoning. There is what we called individual differences. Some people dont have the hobby of reading but they thinks quickly and respond actively to any thinking level. It matter also with the inheritance or hereditary of who really they are. There are other that good reader but not good in decision making or thinking capacity.

I believe the statement to be accurate. I feel that the more you read, the more knowledge you gain. From that knowledge, you can form opinions and actually start conversations. I think that in order to grow as an induvidual, you have to search for knowledge, by doing this, you will gain a greater understanding of yourself and the world around you.

i think it is true also. but we also have to consider what does / did he read? generally, it is assumed that 'educated' people have better opinion and judgement, but usually people are only 'experts' on certain topics/subjects. but business leaders, organization heads, and heads of governments - most of these people would have or should have a better / balanced judgements - but they also need to have the correct and accurate information and feedback from their aides.. or else even the most educated/smartest man, could make a wrong judgement..

williamjisir, Margaret Fuller once said: “Today a reader, tomorrow a leader.” And I just find her words very apt with your post here. However, I do feel that reading alone is insufficient for one to gain good knowledge. For good applicable knowledge will need to be accompanied by sound and well planned guidance and education respectively. Reading is just a process of equipping ourselves with the necessary knowledge to handle, express and most of all add colors to our simple life. As in the words of Aldous Huxley: “Every man who knows how to read has it in his power to magnify himself, to multiply the ways in which he exists, to make his life full, significant and interesting” Notice the first few words, where he says "Every man who knows how to read.." which I am sure will explain my aforesaid that reading needs to be accompanied with proper guidance and education. I think in today's modern world where everything is all available on the super highway, the information and knowledge abounds however, to the seeker, he/she will need to be careful and discerning enough to avoid being misguided. This is where we should never hesitate to seek our parents, mentors, teachers or counselors to discuss and share what we are not sure of and not make false presumptions and perspectives with wrongful or erroneous articles. For true knowledge does makes a man whilst false knowledge is even much more dangerous than ignorance, as in the words of Heraklietos of Ephesos: "Whosoever wishes to know about the world must learn about it in its particular details. Knowledge is not intelligence. In searching for the truth be ready for the unexpected. Change alone is unchanging. The same road goes both up and down. The beginning of a circle is also its end. Not I, but the world says it: all is one." And hence, I just find it aptly to conclude with the words of Confucius here where he said: “Real knowledge is to know the extent of one's ignorance.” Have a nice day.

Hello my friend williamjisir Ji, I bring out something to have a look :- http://forums.plentyoffish.com/datingPosts7963302.aspx "A well read man isn't necessarily an intelligent man I just came across a few posts by someone who obviously is a well read man . His command of the English language is impeccable however the statement he made about having no tolerance or patience for stupid people was ignorant in itself. Those that read frequently may have educated their vocabulary and may have some knowledge about a particular subject but that doesn't define intelligence. I work with developmentally challenged adults who I would consider far more intelligent than the individual that made that statement. Was that statement ignorant by other people standards? A well read man isn't necessarily an intelligent man You think he is a moran for making that statement, someone else might thing the statement is sage like. I guess it's all relative. Missing the question being asked in this thread????? " May God bless You and have a great time.

in my mind, the man who reads well not means who thinks well,if two men read one book and request them write down the contents of this book.i'm sure their opinion is different, maybe one of them only write the content, but the other will have his opinion in the contents.my means read book should be use by heart or by brain,so that the book will belong to himself,if not, book only for a rest,no other effect. good luck!

"The man who reads well is that man who thinks well, who has a background for opinion and stand for judgment" I actually think this one is true. A knoweledgeable man has no apprehensions when he is asked about a certain topic since he may be able to talk it. As for someone who has no idea about it, he/she cannot stand up for it because he has no idea of what it is about. It would be difficult for the man who knows nothing to relate to the person who has read about a certain topic. So, a person who has read a certain topic has the right to speak out for what he believes in.
