Both! I am hard working! When my supervisor would say that do 1 hour overtime, I would do that. But I am also smart cause I always have ways to make extra money. It could be through internet or personal.

Some people are smart because they actually know how to work. This is a term called ROP required opportunity work they just now what needs to done for current requirement , and they only do that perfectly and they only interact with people whom they think are worth. But hard working people tend to do all required things which eats time and most of the time they fail to deliver.

I think it can be hard to get recognition at work if you are the kind of person who generally keeps quiet and just gets the job done without making a lot of noise about it. I think you have to be aware that sometimes you have to take risks or the rewrads won't come. I'm willing to take risks and I know that often I fail but then again, sometimes I win. So this makes the risks worth it for me. If I didn't take risks I have no idea where I would be now but probably in some very safe small job, and very bored!

To do right things is more important than to do things in right way for your career. What most impress your boss is not working hard or overtime, but playing a key role when something happen. Frankly,I am not a hard worker and alos not smart enough on my job.

do you know that there is a self-evident principle, actually, there are only 20 percent of people in a company work hard and are important, and the rest 80 percent are mediocrities relatively, likewise, 20 percent of those hard workers are given recognition, and the rest are neglected, similarly, 20 percent of those who get recognition are leaders of the team. So this is a simple and God-made implicit rules of the universe. Now by taking this rule into account, you can understand something.

You mean 20 percent do the 80 percent work and 80 percent do only 20 percent work..Yes leaders take credits for most of the things and blames subordinates for failures..Anyway thanks for response.

I practice the following when working: efficient and proactive. Working smart and hard at the same time, no need to do overtime if one is efficient and proactive. It's okay to be smart, just make sure that your integrity is intact.
