Unfair star rating and mean people, Why bother?

I find this extremely telling. I was going to give positive rating to a couple people who currently have really low star rankings because I thought they were giving me a good debate. Today I found MY star number had dropped, likely because of them! (I'm sure I didn't tick anyone else off.)
Why do people do this? Disagreeing with someone is the fundamental GREATNESS of MyLot. If we get into a heated debate, it drives our income here. Conflict shuld be rewarded.
AND, whatever happened to, "I don't agree with what you say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it"? Are we so afraid of other's opinions that even here, where our debate is likely only a source of amusement for others and not likely to change anyone's mind, we have to aggressively discredit our "opponents"?
What do you think causes this? And, do you think we should get rid of the stars?

It's the POWER I say! Some folks are drunk of the power of the "-" button!
I have had my star go up and down...and up and down again...because some folks didn't agree with what I posted. I don't believe the star ranking serves any purpose other than giving folks something to talk about once in awhile.
(I'll plus your discussion....cause I have DA POWER!)

I believe you may have seen some of the discussions I've been in lately. I know I wasn't well received by our political "friends" but I thought debate was supposed to be part of the fun.
Anyway, I'm refuse to be drunk with power yet. I'll save my He-Man impression for Halloween.

So, I shouldn't feel sorry for people with low 'marks' and rate them + ? lol
I guess I am just to sympathetic that way. I also despise injustice and running around hitting the - because of personality or a disagreement with opinion is just not fair. But then life is not FAIR is it? I observed the number and color changing on mine ....but since I've talked it out....I feel better. Glad to see that most do not take things personal...I so love a good debate. :)

Do not give much importance to the star number you have. It does not make anyone good or bad. Having a high star does not mean that the person is great and also having a low star does not make a person small. Just keep posting whatever you feel and enjoy yourself without bothering about star ratings. My star number was 4 earlier now it has increased to 7 and it will fluctuate again I'm sure. As far as getting rid of stars is concerned, that is not a bad idea but it is totally in the hands of mylot admin.
enjoy posting

We are all *STARS* on here regardless of the colour.
Do you judge a person by the clothes they are wearing? No and neither do I.
Whatever the colour of the star, we all know it can be used badly by others so it is just a colour. If we were all blue that would not be good either as it takes all colours to make a rainbow

Well that's also happened to me, you notice my star sometimes goes down and goes up. Thanks to the people who rated me positive. Well anyway, just don't be bothered, stars didn't do anything for our earnings here, it's to cheer us here to continue myloting, and don't mind those people who gives you negative rate. Just continue myloting and one day you will increase your ratings.
cheers.

I just think it was so wrong in this case because I was just about to give them positive feedback. I was so frustrated. Thanks for the note.

Hello friend,
I think some people have too big egos and they do not understand the importance of disagreement. After all, we are meant to have discussions here and those debates are bound to get heated sometime or the other.
Giving someone a negative rating just for disagreement is totally senseless to me. I hope people mature soon and learn to appreciate others' opinions.

Personally, this is why I sometimes feel this Star thing is overrated. I know that everyone should be allowed their own thoughts and opinions in here, and if we do not always agree shouldn't that be our perogative as well? I know that it does disappoint and sometimes run off Good people just because others want to debate and argue and create problems instead of just read what others have to say and see that people here are created different. I know that this is why I usually will shy away from these type of discussions, etc. as well.

Well, if you've been here long enough you'll realize the star rating system is not an accurate rating system, well, there's no full proof system anyway in this world as every system has a loop hole & can be broken. So like you said, why bother? Just enjoy yourself here as people are always people? Haha!~

Well thankfully I haven't had to many negative experience here in mylot and I hope it stays that way.
But I think that some people just cant stand it when someone disagrees with them and they get angry at anyone who has a different opinion from theres, and they use the rating system to get back at other members becuse they didnt agree with what was said or posted, I dont think that way at all. in fact I dont mind of someone disagrees with me as long as we respect each others rights and opinions its all fine with me, and I dont give negative ratings I believe in the old saying, (if you dont have anything nice to say dont say anything at all) and I think the same when it comes to the RATINGS SYSTOM TOO, I just dont think we have to be rude or mean to someone to get our point across, lets continue to keep mylot fun and comfortable and post respectfully.

I agree. Of course, even if someone's not being "respectful", as long as they are engaging me in a conversation that doesn't devolve into solely namecalling, I can handle alot. I expect people who speak their mind to get fired up sometimes and say something a little less than flattering (especially if I'm geting the better of them in an argument).

Pretty frustrating, wasn't it? I felt the same, once my star rating was on 9, and the next day, it was dropped to 8. Without a reason, or understanding, my star was rated negatively by someone who I didn't really know. I might offended them in my posting, or whatever reason. But, I posted what I want to say in my mind, and I never meant to curse someone, or badmouthed to anybody here. We should get rid of star rating.

It seems silly. I wonder if there is a MyLot administrator's report that shows how many negatives a person gives out? Other than the stars, we are pretty much self regulating on here and we know who we want to avoid so if the stars are just going to be used for spite, I fail to see the point in them anymore.

I can understand that those that have enjoyed the higher ratings and then drop down (for no good reason) would be upset.
I have not used the - rating. I felt and still do that that should be for a person who threatens or flames or who is obviously (not just in my meager opinion) but very blatantly being hateful to the poster. I don't consider a difference of opinion to be reason for rating low. I do feel sorry for those who use it spitefully...they're missing the whole point of the site and must really suffer from low self esteem.

I think the stars are pretty pointless to be honest. I just speak my mind alot of the time, but I have seen people try to gang up on me because of it. I enjoy the political debates on here, and I think its a shame that others bother coming on here get so offended by people disagreeing with them. As far as I'm concerned, everyone else can think whatever they like. I'm not changing my opinions unless I get a really good reason to. I'd far prefer people to have a constructive argument with me than just give me a bad rating because they dont like the fact that I have a mind of my own.
Totally agree that ML should get rid of the stars, or at least remove the rating options from more controversial categories.

I don't understand why some users will rate others negative just because they disagree with them. I have heard others say, that mylot doesn't want us to rate another user negatibr just because we don't agree. We all have a right to our opinion whether right or wrong. If we can't do that, then there is sure something wrong with our society. I don't rate anyone negative if I don't agree with them. I just don't rate them at all. I rate all positives. Every discussion I respond to, everyone will get a positive from me. I had a low rating for the longest time, then all of a sudden it started going up and still going up. I am glad that people think enough of my responses to rate them positive. Good luck to you and happy mylotting.

well, it had happened for quite some time here and it can't be avoided... i just ignore it... it doesn't worth getting angry or annoyed just because of the star... as long as we have a clear conscience and we feel that we didn't do anything wrong, we don't have to be afraid of them and just keep doing what we are doing here... take care and have a nice day...

I always wondered about the stars. I think some people are so vindictive and I assume that they think that myLot will rate them lower earnings wise - at least that seems the logical thing to do. Now if I were one of those horrible people and myLot said "your star ratings affect your earnings, so be nice and polite" that is the weapon I would use to get people to agree with me even if I were one of the people who started a new interest such as "people who love Hitler"
But myLot does not use the star system for wages like and we all should not live in fear of answering hard questions or giving hard questions. Unfortunately because of the star system, there are some members here who just ask safe questions and are afraid of controversy politics, religion, and other discussions because of that.
I think the star system should be scrapped.

Unfortunately, there are some very narrow-minded people out there with the mentality of "my way or the highway." Couple that with the right topic (one that sparks a lot of passion from people on both sides of the argument), and you may end up with some very upset people. And it simply could be that they think less of you because they don't agree with you to the point that they find your opinions on the matter totally ridiculous and cannot believe a human being could think that way.
Now, granted, that is an educated guess, as I honestly have no idea what the topic was, and I am in no way implying any of those things about you, specifically. It was meant as a generalization only. Perhaps it is in the way you are responding? Do you maybe come across as putting others down, or berating others for their opinions? Again, I don't know anything about you, I'm just guessing here about what the problem may be. Some topics are just heated, period. People are going to walk away angry. That is why I tell my good friends that there are two subjects I refuse to ever discuss with them: religion and politics. It will just get ugly, and I don't care to lose any friends over something as ridiculous as a heated debate!
I don't know why people are like that. I, like you, really appreciate a good debate. There are certain topics on which I have a very strong opinion, and people may hate me for that, or they may not. Personally, I don't care. My life is bigger than the "stars" I receive on MyLot. I usually end an argument with "I guess we will have to agree to disagree," when I realize that this person's stance for the other side of the argument is as strong as mine and they will not be swayed.
I don't really care about the stars. If people want to give me negative ratings, that's fine. I kind of use MyLot as my outlet anyway. I don't make enough money here to be here for the money. Besides, I am a decent writer, and very long-winded, so I imagine I'd make it up pretty quickly.
Long story short, if you wanna debate, I'm here for ya!

sometimes i wonder who give the star rating, they just like bringing people down and i think its time for mylot to stop those who are doing the rating thing, there are people with great discussions which do not receive the ideal rating while there are some who just write simple things and get the best rating and i wonder why people could be so biased

Heathcliff...I couldn't have said it better. So glad to read this as I was wondering what you were like...as I've seen your responses and we do not always agree. I like the quote...use it alot myself. I like you, feel that disagreement is HOW people learn from each other and is what keeps this site working...I said on one discussion if we all agree then it just becomes a mutual admiration society...lol.
I posted a discussion relating my observations on this very thing...I've noticed since I've started defending Sarah Palin my rating dropped.
