Are people rating others based on their opinions on issues?

I have observed informally...that those with conservative views or who speak out passionately about issues here on MyLot (conservative or liberal) are rated rather low. Now, this is not something I took notes on...just an observation. My rating has gone down since I began defending Sarah Palin...maybe it's just my imagination...but it seems that ratings are being given out based on agree/disagree and this is something the guidelines warns against...what do you think is behind my observations...maybe people just don't like my style of writing? lol

Yes, I do rate them, and I rate them positive. Just because I disagree with someone doesn't mean I should rate them negative. Some people feel that way though, and I don't agree with it, but that is the way it is. We should all have a right to share our viess whether right. If someone's post isn't pertinent or has no substance, then I dont' rate them at all. I just don't think that it is right to rathe them negative. I will just continue on rating positive as to help other with their star ratings. Good luck to you and happy mylotting.

i've noticed that too - it's happpened to me a bit which is why i've got a 7 but i've seen some people knocked down to a one in the politics section. i haven't marked any negatives yet but would only do it for very nasty or irrelevant comments. i think there are a lot of users that do this simply because they disagree with someone though

Me too....and those who do this are sad sad people with low self esteem, in my opinion. I'd call the bullies but I have made a promise to myself that name calling not be a part of my MyLot experience. :)

Hi, DebraK!
Anyone who has followed your posts for any time at all would expect that you would stand up for Sarah Palin. Why they would rate you negatively for that is beyond me. I thought the negatives were for those who write things that are actually offensive, not the things with which we disagree or not. My rating hasn't changed in a very long time, and a lot of the time people don't agree with me. That's what a discussion forum is about, after all -- a variety of opinions.

lol...I hope you mean that in the best way..;)
Actually, I would stick up for any woman or child who was treated so badly, conservative OR liberal. I can say that with all sincerity.
I have been a victim and had to learn to rise above that mentality. I despise the strong picking on the weak....or vulnerable. And her children or Chelsea Clinton or even our fearless leader's two daughters....qualify. No child should have to pay for what their parent does or doesn't do.

Just as I am sure it is against guidelines, I am sure that it happens. It's anonymous and some people do rate people negatively for differing opinions. Personally I think myLot should get rid of the whole rating thing.

I don't know that the ratings affect payout but then they don't tell us what the algorithm is.

Well, you know me....I say what I think. I am working on saying it in a mannerly way. But the opinionated side of me does show. So, I guess I will have to just work harder to reach payout. It upsets my sense of justice that just because someone disagrees with me...they can effect how quickly I can reach payout....but hey! this is America...and I CAN still say what I think.

Not sure exactly where I got that idea...but the higher your rating...the more $ cents per post? Not sure, don't quote me. Any one know for sure?

Yes, you are right. I've suffered from this myself, even though it says in the guidelines you should never rate anyone negative just because you disagree with their opinion. Mylot is a great place, but as in all walks of life, there are some pretty intolerant people here. Just don't let them bully you into keeping your opinions to yourself. I certainly won't. If other people can't deal with your opinion, that's their problem, not yours. Carry on being honest and your rating will soon increase again.

Personally unfortunately there are many people that will rate people here just for their Views, and especially when it is something politically based for sure. I know it may not always seem fair, and I rate a person based on the way they write, etc. more than their views. Because aren't we all allowed to disagree sometimes? But maybe this is why I do not respond back to a lot of these type of discussions as well.

Yes, we are rated according to our views.
If people don't like our views then we get a negative rating.

Just another way to silence the population. What they don't realize...if one group is 'silenced' all groups can be silenced.

i think probably it cna be as you described in your post as well!!people normally will rate posts if they are agree with your opinion and view and may be did not rate the psot for the way you wrote and something like that!!
I think in mnay cases it can be antural that people before give a positive or negative rating to your posts are really influenced by the meaning and the content of your post too!!

It used to happen around here ar more than it does now. It is a rather immature practice as far as I am concerned. We really ought to remember that not even our own children see eye to eye with us sometimes but their views are still very much valid ans they should be encouraged to express themselves.
Mylot is a worldwide discussion site and we should be open minded enough to accept the views of others even if we disagree in principle.
There was such a war of the stars here some time ago I used to wonder if it would ever end.

You know....I find it more offensive that someone can be so petty as to want to do even that little bit of harm to another just out of spitefulness. And I do see that it is mostly those who are Republican or conservative (excepting the rude idiots) that get low ratings. So here it is that conservatives are called closed minded and biggoted...but others of more liberal bent...are trying to shut them up by low rating them? lol I will look for liberals with real low ratings....just to be fair. I'm sure it happens on both sides. But yesterday after spending two days in discussions on Sarah Palin....the conservatives were down quite a bit. To bad I can't do a more formal study on this...lol.
Thanks for your input. And I do appreciate your statement about the value of others opinions.

I think that your probably right. People who talk a lot about politics are going to have a lower rating because those who don't agree with them are going to give them a negative because they disagree. I don't know this is always true, and there are other reasons for why people's stars are low, but politics and language barriers are probably the two reasons why most do negative.

I guess so, but most smart people are going to realize that the low rating is just because you don't back down! Which is good.

I struggle with myself...I'm a very compassionate person deep down. Life has taught me to be a 'fighter' and not back down. I can usually see both sides but I definately am not whishy washy....I live in an area where views are very conservative in the older generation. I've also lived in the city where I encountered many fine good people who thought much differently about things than I do. I've seen both sides of the story. I know what works in the long run...as I've lived a life of hardship and lived a life of ease too...and seen what it does to people both positively and negatively. I also have rebelled against faith in 'God....and learned how to find my place in the universe secure in HIS love. I guess what I am tryin to say is I am passionate about what I know. Sometimes I forget my manners but it is not because I don't care.

Nope.... people really do rate for all the wrong resons which is why some don't rate at all.
I may not agree with someone (such as the fact that I am so not a Palin fan) but I don't rate them done just because of it. I even rate someone who makes a good discussion about something positivly even when it goes against my own view. A good point is a good point.
Besides how can you rate a person on just one point they make. There is a lot I like about you that has nothing to do with the dreaded palin. *wink*

Thank you. That made me smile. :)
I can relate to Sarah Palin. She has a bunch of kids, she's smart like a fox. The few times I saw her speak she seemed self assured. She can hunt. She can look good and be comfortable in a ball gown or a coverall. And she loves her kids. What else is there? lol
And I absolutely despise someone being singled out and treated unjustly.
Glad we met...and hope we can get to know one another well. :)

Hopefully not. In all honesty, I will only rate someone positively if it seems like they really put a lot of effort and kindness into their answer. And I'll only rate negatively if someone is being unnecessarily rude, really opinionated and pushy about their opinion, and really argumentative. Sometimes these rude people share my opinions, and sometimes they don't. I know there are people on myLot who rate because of your opinion - even if you try to express it in a polite and respectful manner (which you should). A lot of people are soo opinionated that they hate to be contradicted, even if it's in a respectful, debate-like manner. It's upsetting to think that we're being judged by what opinions we have, and we can't be civil adults and share ideas in a mature manner. Some people will never grow up, apparently.
A lot of people avoid contreversial topics alltogether because of the ratings issue. I think this is silly. What's the point of having open discussion if you're not going to get your hands a little dirty?
I don't think you should worry about ratings. The rating system is kind of silly, almost like a popularity contest. It's best to just ignore it and let what happens happens. Obviously the ratings in no way reflect our earnings or our compassion and whatnot.

So, if someone does not like me or they disagree with my political views...they can determine how quickly I get to payout. And if I am really determinded to get to payout and become wishy washy and dull in my responses...perhaps then my rating goes up.
So the majority opinion on here runs the show by low rating people - effectively keeping them quiet about their views. Which then keeps all people from having any other opinion or thoughts to consider.
Needs to change!

Hi Debra. I do not think anyone should rate down based on the other persons opinions. We are entitled to having our personal opinion, after all. Even if someone disagrees with it, they should still respect the rights of others to have their own unique opinions. I've never rated down, only up, or just no rating at all.

You are a truly peacefulwmn....thank you for your input. I sometimes will disagree and be very passionate about it..but I realize that everyone else is just as passionate about their beliefs too. I have just recently started using the rates and it truthfully never occured to me to rate a minus. I think of that as for someone who cusses, calls names and threatens people. Come back anytime. :)

why worry about the rate ? the most important is you express out your opinion. i always suspect someone giving rate base on how pretty or handsome one are.., ok, just kidding.
