Rinse and Repeat

An acquaintance on an email list mentioned that she was very excited about finding her favorite shampoo on sale and got an even better deal since she had a coupon. I applauded her for that. What got me was her statement that 'I can make it last almost a month if no one else uses it too'. Wow - I buy a bottle of shampoo maybe twice a year. Now granted I don't wash my hair every day, but I remember back when I was much younger and in the Marine Corps I would shower more than once a day because of PT (physical training) and washed my hair every day, and I still didn't go through anywhere near that much shampoo. So fess up - do you lather, rinse and repeat and go through a lot of shampoo? Or do you follow the 'a little dab'll do ya' mentality and make that bottle of shampoo go much further? Maybe only your hairdresser knows for sure.

I'm definitely the little dab'll do ya type. I've worn my hair short for 30 or more years and when I was working full time I did shampoo every day. If it was just me at home a small bottle of shampoo would last 3 months or more. I've let my hair grow since I retired and it's really too much trouble to shampoo it every day, plus as I get older there's less oil deposited on my hair, so shampooing isn't necessary. I found a 3 for $5 sale on shampoo last summer and bought 2 bottles of shampoo and one of conditioner. I used the last of the shampoo last week, so 2 bottles of shampoo for a year, and that's about average. I don't lather twice. I use a vinegar/water leave in rinse after the first lather and find that one lather works just fine.

The vinegar does make your hair shiny and fresh.

I do not go through alot of shampoo, but I do go through alot of conditioner for my hair. You see I have very long hair. I wash it every other day. I probably go through 2 conditioners to 1 shampoo every 2 months. I do lots of surveys, and sometimes they offer to try different shampoos and conditioners. I prefer Pantene to any other brand.

It seems that some time in the past the way to wash one's hair was to wet it shampoo rinse then shampoo it again. We used a good hand full of shampoo too. But as I got older and learned about being frugal I cut down a lot on the amount of shampoo and only did it one. I have since also stopped using conditioner. But then I have very short hair too. It's like those tooth past commercials that have the tooth past all the way along the bristles. I only use a pea size to brush my teeth and find it adequate so the same with the shampoo a dime size is more than enough.

I take a bath everyday as well as I shampoo my hair. It makes me feel clean and it gives my hair a fresh scent all day. My average or usual usage of shampoo is once a day which is equivalent to a half of a 10ml sachet. But, there are times when I have many appointment and I feel so dirty and I have to repeat washing my body and my hair but I don't overdo shampooing because it makes my hair dry and dull. Instead, I use conditioner to my hair and rinse it thoroughly.

When I was younger...I shampooed a lot. The last thing I wanted was hair that had enough grease to fry donuts. As I got older, my hair dried out more and more. Now, I do shower each day and I do put conditioner in it but I don't shampoo each day...more like every other day. My daughter goes through a lot of shampoo and conditioner...she's 15 and hair products are big on her list of priorities.

OK well first of all I have long hair. Up to a couple of weeks ago, I had really long hair. But no way, no how could I make a bottle of shampoo last 6 months. Nuh uh... But I do love it when I get coupons for my favorite shampoo!

There are three of us in my family. We use our shapoo and conditioner sparingly also. We buy the cheaper kind, which is Suave. It lasts quite some time for us but we still use quite a bit of it.

So with three of you using it frequently, does it last a month or more?

I do not do the rinse and repeat thing but I do get my hair clean. I use a moderate amount of shampoo a month. I buy enough shampoo to last for awhile. I always get the big bottle. I only buy shampoo every couple of months. I can't make a bottle last a whole year.

nope, i wash my hair once a day (usually) and only use a dime sized amount of shampoo. we are quite brand loyal (head and shoulders for us) and well, its not cheap so we are pretty frugal with our shampoo. i lucked out a month ago and got a huge bottle along with a small bottle for $5-! (its about half gone - there are 4 of us here at this house.)

The only time I rinse and repeat is if I have a lot of hairspray or chlorine in my hair. I have also noticed that if you buy the better brands of shampoo, they do last longer because you don't need to use as much. I only wash my hair about 3 times a week, so that helps in saving shampoo.

'Way back when' I used to 'rinse and repeat' as well because that's what the bottle said. I know better now and like you, will use more if my hair has a build-up of product that doesn't come out easily. Again, even when I used more than what I'm using now, it was still nowhere near a bottle a month.

I usually wash mine every few days--when you get older, your hair isn't as oily so that's a benefit of aging. I also broke down and spent money to get my hair cut last week..it was hot and muggy, even with air conditioning, and I couldn't stand the hair on my neck! It was too short to pull back properly and I just snapped. Before, I used a few dabs of shampoo. I very thrifty and use only what will do the job. Now I use one dab! I don't lather, rinse and repeat because that makes your hair even unhealthier. Shampoo strips all the oils off the hair, which is why it is "squeaky" clean. Your system works hard to replace those oils, making your hair oily. So I do the bare minimum to get it clean and have a healthy scalp. The shampoo industry is counting on people to use a lot of their product.

I agree that they want you to use more - job security! But even when I did subscribe to that nonsense and used more than I probably should have, I still didn't need a bottle a month.

I shampoo my hair every 3 days in average. If I use hair spray or moose then I will shampoo when I got home. If not my head will itch like hell because we exposed our hair to a lot of harmful things everyday (such as smoke). I do rinse and repeat, but the second lather I only use the size of coin of shampoo (it is enough already for the second lather, I read somewhere that is exactly the amount of shampoo we should use). I used up my shampoo in about 2-3 months. :-)

Now see, that's not nearly as bad and you do use more because of the other products you add to your hair. I can understand that, but even with that your's last a lot longer than this other woman. I don't think I could use a bottle a month if I tried.

I think your friend washes her hair everyday and uses a lot at one time. Maybe she buy small bottle so it finished so quick. It is really not necessary, buying new bottle of shampoo every month. Unless she has a big family and they all shampoo everyday. Neat.

Many people use waaaay too much shampoo. People with long hair only need a dab the size of a nickle, people with short hair a dab the size of a dime. Using more only dries out your hair. Also, I can't tell you how many people I've known who think that "lather, rinse, repeat" means to wash your hair twice in a row. They mean THE NEXT TIME YOU SHOWER, people! Not twice in a row! What good could that possibly do? The only people I could think of who could get hair that dirty are those who work around a lot of mud and muck. I work outside in the sweltering heat all summer and only need to wash my hair with shampoo once every couple of days (yes, I'm a girl and yes, I have long hair). My hair is shiny and clean, I swear.

Sometimes me and my husband use different types of shampoos especially if I color my hair and I want to keep the color from fading as fast I will use a special shampoo for that. Maybe the lady has long hair. I use more when my hair is longer. I usually will use a bottle of shampoo in maybe 5-6 weeks. I do sometimes repeat when I have alot of sprays, gels, and other hair care products in my hair..

My husband insists that you rinse and repeat. He has dandruff shampoo, and he figures that way you get rid of the dandruff more quickly. I find if I rinse and repeat, the second time I do not need to use as much, but I have oily hair so the first time, there is hardly any lather. The trouble is that we have hard water, and we do have to use a bit more then usual. I only use a little shampoo each time and it will last about a couple of months. Right now I am washing my hair every day, but that is because we have a shower and it is summer time and my hair is short enough so it dries quickly, but I will have to wait until it gets cold and see if I still follow that procedure.

Wow! She really must use a lot of shampoo every time she washes her hair, or she washes it three times a day using the lather, rinse, repeat method! I'm like you in that my shampoo lasts much longer than a month. I have Dove shampoo in a pump bottle and use one 'pump' per shampoo. Even with long hair, that's all I need. Rarely, I'll rinse and repeat, but not usually because it's not needed. I don't put any other stuff on my hair so there's nothing to 'build up' except for normal scalp oils and one pump does the trick.

I just mentioned to her that I thought that was a lot of shampoo in such a short time, and she started in on this diatribe about why she needs this particular shampoo, yadda yadda yadda ... Um, I just applauded you for making such a good deal on the shampoo you bought. My issue was how much you went through. Sheesh ...

Gee, mine lasts for about 2 or 3 months. I do use more in the summer or when I am dancing a lot and my head is very sweaty, but she must use quite a bit. Also, if you water down the shampoo it lasts longer.

My hair is very long almost to my behind. But I can get a bottle of shampoo to last me almost a month. I go through more conditioner then shampoo because my hair can get into knots very easy. I wash my hair once and condition it once but I don't repeat it.
