Lots of you are good at writing! How to write well?

Writing is a fundamental skill that most everyone will need at some point in life. Even though, some people asked for my suggestions about writing today. Oh my gosh! I can't decide which is more humiliating. The fact that I can't write well myself, or that I can't even come up with a decent enough opinion to share with them. As you know, a person who lives in a glass room shouldn't throw the soda can! I just don't know it! Would you please tell me how do you write better than your past? Please!

One way to write better is to read more. Read the classics and think about just what made them classics. Buy a good English dictionary and a thesaurus. Have conversations with yourself in your head and put them on paper. Consider criticism, even that which you believe was not intended to be constructive. There is usually a thread of truth in it. Just keep writing.

Every learner is looking for the secret or at least an easy way to follow formula of great English writing, each hoping of that magic found within books written on the subject. So we amass a massive collection of materials and I confess that I am one of them. I sat at my desk, staring at a blank computer screen when my eyes wandered over to my books. Specifically staffs on writing, some thick, some thin, some old and some new. I continued along this path of reading and writing for several minutes, not realizing exactly how many materials that I had collected over these days. Then the second came when it was time to put everything in order so I could bask in the golden nuggets that I had found. Look at these books, Jane, The old man and the sea, Pride and prejudice, Jane EYRE...what am I doing with them? Without practice, you are not going anywhere, which is just the bare truth. There is no easy way, I kown, but easier way. haha

When writing I think it is most important to be clear, concise, and descriptive. This all has to be done in such a manner to keep the reader interested. If your vocabulary is not somewhat advanced than you can end up sounding repetitive or elementary. On the other hand if your vocabulary is too advanced you run the risk of being misunderstood or looking like a show off. I also think in order to effectively write, spelling and grammar is important. Its hard to completely indulge yourself in an article or take someone's advice when at the very least they cannot spell common words.

Actually when I'm in a writer's block, meaning when i can't find any meaningful words to write down. I usually give myself 10 minutes to clear my head then another 10 minutes just doodling. Write whatever comes to your head for 10 minutes straight. That usually clears it and I believe that we encounter a block when we are stressed or emotional or have a lot on our minds that's why no coherent thought can pass through. So I let all those thoughts come out and in the process when it is time to actually write I am able to clear out irrelevant thoughts for the time being and able to write a decent enough article ^_^

It's really not as difficult as you think. Two things you need to do to write better. First, you need to read. Read all kinds of materials. The more you read the more you get a knowledge of how to write. The second thing is just keep writing! Whether you do it here or at some of the other web sites, just do it. As you write you begin to express yourself better (and others may comment on your writing) The more you do anything the better you get at it. (You know the old saying-practice makes perfect.) So keep reading and writing. If you are very brave get someone else to read what you have written and give you their opinion. You'll learn from others and incorporate it in your own writing. Good luck to you.

Thanks a lot for your great response. If I could really read so many materials like you said, surely I would benefit a great deal. Have a great day!

I love to write and My Lot is one of the best places where you can write and constantly improve. I think that the more that you write the better you will become. I don't know whether I'm a good writer or not I just know that I gain so much enjoyment out of it. I have written a few articles that have been published on helium and I also have a piece of fiction published on Associated Content. It's nice to have others read what you write. The good thing about My Lot is you can write about anything and everything. I love the creative writing aspect of writing! You can create whatever comes to your mind, you can create whatever you want. Well, good luck with your own writing and never put that pen down!!! Andrew

A very good topic to discuss as it is very close to my heart. Yes as I have heard from others and have myself felt it writing is a skill which some possess and some don't. I myself have always wanted to write, pen my thoughts but never been able to do. I don't understand what holds me back. I am a voracious reader, with strong views about different matters, but when it comes to expressing it I can do it better verbally rather than writing itdown. Yes maybe with this discussion I can also gain some insight as to at least how to start writing may be little by little. Also I believe the platform myLot is the best means to make that start, as with every sentence I am writing I am having the feeling that I don't write that awfully. Yes in the beginning it requires lots of discipline firstly to sit and write, then maybe with time the flow is achieved, but the initial step has to be taken. Secondly I believe it is not necessary to write heavy words or sentences full of difficult words. A view or thought can be expressed by means of a very simple sentence. Well I think I have made my beginning. Lets see how it proceeds.

Just you try to write things the way you are conversing with others basically. Develop your skills this way which can help you a lot in posting or in responding discussions.
