Ferret Nail Clipping!

So, we've only had our ferret for a few weeks and I've yet to cut his nails. I have the clippers and I'm hoping one of you has the advice on how best to do it. I've learned that ferrets don't sit still very much so I'm a little worried about this task at hand!

The easiest way is to give them a treat. With my kids, I put Ferretone on their belly. While they are busy licking it off, I can clip their nails. Other people choose to scruff their ferrets while they clip, but I just prefer to use the Tone. You can get Ferretone from any pet store -- I haven't come across a ferret yet that doesn't like it!

yep...that's what we do too. Usually my husband holds the tube of ferritone, sort of like a bottle, and I just clip away. Just hold the paw very tightly (so you don't twist the nail when you clip it) and be careful not to cut into the quick (the pink part). He'll get used to it in no time, especially if it's not a bad experience for him. Good luck! :)

I have to almost hypnotise my male to get him to sit still long enough to clip his nails lol. Trying to clip my little girl ferrets nails is a whole nother story...shes a spaz. But giving treats works wonders. ;)

The easiest way we've found, is to have 2 people doing it lol. I have either my fiancee or my daughter scruff them, then I cut one paw at a time. Don't know if you know this or not, but when they're scruffed they yawn, and sit still. From what I've read and what my old vet told me, it's kind of out still on whether or not long periods of scruffing them is good or bad. So, vet said just do one at a time, take a short break, then continue. One book I read said there were actual "contests" at ferret shows, how many yawns one would take during scruffing lol. When I'm done clipping their nails, I put a strip of either ferretvite or ferrettone on my arm/leg and let them lick it off as a treat. It helps. Good luck!
