Winnie The Pooh - A male or a female?

I was teaching my two year old boy the subject of gender. I was telling him that he is a boy, Mommy is a girl, Daddy is a boy and so on. Then this smart chap of mine asked me if his favourite character, Winnie the Pooh is a boy or a girl. Immediately, I answered boy. But then, I came to think of it, if Pooh bear is a Male, why is he called Winnie? Anyone here has any idea if Winnie the Pooh is actually a Male of a Female? Please share.

I think Winnie is a male, just the guts feeling. I had never thought of cartoons character (for those animated ones) being female. Expect for the princesses story, even Tom & Jerry, I would think its male.

Tom and Jerry would definitely be male! So mischievous, especially Jerry! I just cant stand how Tom always fall pranked by Jerry. Ok, back to topic. You are quite right there, most cartoon characters portray males. Maybe it is more politically correct to make them male so that they can be portrayed as naughty and many more that we ladies are born NOT to be. :)

Wow!your question is a pretty intelligent one, I mean I never encounter such question here in mylot that made me think deeper than this!lol!yeah, me too I am quite intrigue with the real genders of animated characters or disney characters too. To answer your question about the gender of winnie the pooh, I check it in wikipedia and found out that winnie the pooh is a male because in an animated series, pooh was dubbed by a male voice, so he is a boy afterall, well this solve your problem with your child when asking if pooh is a boy or a girl.

jlamela, you actually went and check in wikipedia for this? Thank you so much, love you! But he is certainly wearing a tee too short for a guy isnt he? Showing tummy and all. LOL. But yeah, hands down, I think he is a male too.

I know he's a boy, but I don't know why. Him, Tiger, Rabbit, and Piglet are all boys. I guess because why would Christopher Robin want to play with girls? I don't know, but they are. Also, when I was a kid, and even know, I was convinced Piglet was a girl, but sadly he's a boy.

You confident it is a male? Why can't it be a female? After all, it is a Winnie! LOL. Confuse eh? When I was growing up, this was never an issue until my little boy brought it up. Now, is piglet really a male? :)

I think winnie the pooh is a boy. Because of his voice and his body built. He also has no hair! But he's kinda coward that makes him a girl. But i'll go for him being a MALE.Ü

I think it is a girl in a sense that it wears a tee so short that is so similar to Ms Spears. But his body built are meant to be that way as it is a bear. But then, the voice is kinda husky eh? LOL.

I think he is a boy, that is what I think :) I also started to teach my girl the subject of gender. Why you telling your boy that mummy is a girl? LOL. Mummy supposed is a woman. Daddy is a man. LOL I teach my girl : Yan Yan is a girl, mummy is a woman. Di Di is a boy, Ba Ba is a man.

Good observation there vingyan. I was waiting for someone to point that out! Yes, I actually do teach him I am a woman and daddy is a man. I was just waiting to see if people really read my discussion thoroughly before responding! You are good, at least you noticed! Well done!

I have never give this question much thought until you bring it up or rather your son brought it up. Come to think of it, I have always assumed that he is a male by virtue of his voice and dressing. I think the only thing confusing about the character is his name. At least now I am more prepared to answer him..or am I? Now I'm more confused.

Oh Rodlkm. You confuses me even more! Let's just settle with Male and if the question on the name arises, let's just say that the name Winnie can be use on both male and female, like Sam, Jess and Winnie? haha

Well Im pretty sure he is male as most of the characters on winnie the pooh are male such as piglet also. There is really no feminine attributes that he has and on winnie the pooh you can usually tell which characters are the females. This is a pretty good question I remember being confused about this when I was little till someone told me pooh was male.

Haha, the creators of Winnie the Pooh is sure one wonderful person who only created male characters. But I seriously think piglet should be a female and Pooh bear should not be named Winnie! :)
