How do you feel about people that abandon their pets?

In our university kids get cats and dogs as pets when they live in the dorms. When the year is up and they move back home, some of the people just leave their cats to fend for themselves. These cats have to find food, and they become a problem for the surrounding community. This also means that there are more and more cats having litters and they end up filling up the shelter with many cats that no one wants. It is sad and some have to be put down. Some people move out of their homes or apartments and leave cats or dogs in the place with no food or water. They sometimes die or when they are found they require medical attention and sometimes have to be put down because they are too far gone. I feel this is wrong and the people should be punished. What do you think should be done?

I think that they are the lowest form of beings, and they should be punished in a big way.

I agree with Sassy, tough subject that pisses me off as well. Most states or cities should have some kind of law/ordinance regarding this, should fall under abandoning pets or even animal cruelty. But I have no idea why anyone would want to do that to their poor pet, it's so cruel. I understand situations come up, and people may be forced to get rid of a poor pet, but take it to the pound at the very least. As sad as it is, I'd rather see the poor thing put down then to roam the streets searching/hunting for food getting sick. I'd hate to see how they cared for their kids if they can't even care for an animal.

Thank you for your reply! I actually got my dog from a girl who had been living in her car with the animal, had let him go with fleas so that he was loosing the hair on his back and had an infection and tapeworm, and as a puppy he had been kicked by her boyfriend when he was angry at her for being gone to long. The girl was pregnant, living off the system and wanted the dog back. Obviously, I did not give him back to her. He is very healthy today, gets all the care he needs and training. I work for a business where I am responsible for the pet department and the hardware department. People bring their pets in and they get treats and love from all the staff. It is a great job!

Yes I agree. These people should be punished. If they cannot look after an animal long term they should never get one in teh first place. Thats sooo crappy. I have taken in at least 5 dogs who's owners have abandoned them.

You are a very good person to do that. I think that guarantees you a place in heaven for sure! Pets are angels put on this earth to teach us lessons, we should treat them with respect. I love my pets!

These are feelings we need to voice. People need to be made aware. I have been so lucky to end up with a bengal cat and a sheperd/wolf/mix that is smart, protective, affectionate and there to greet me every evening when I come home. I love him so much and I make sure he get the best food and care that I can give him. I am the lucky one to have them both!

You have touched on a subject that I am obsessed about. Because I "rescue/foster" in my own home, I have a large extended "little people" family. Where are these peoples heads? This is a life, albeit not human, but to me on equal footing. I have almost come to the conclusion, that a "means" test should be given to every potential pet home. I mean emotional as well as physical. I am at a loss as how to deal with this situation. I spend more time agonizing over this very real situation. But I feel some of the "onus" falls on the pet giver. (Actually) a lot of it...If they had their pets neutered or spayed, they wouldn't have to get rid of unwanted pets to unfit homes. They are selfishly getting rid of a "little person" so they are not burdened, with no thought to the long term consequences. Out of sight, out of mind. But then again don't get me started on "puppy/kitty" mills.

I hate those people who don't care for the life of others, they should be punished in a very harsh way. If they were economically unavle to sustain pets they should nt have bought them in the first place: and even if they have family problems then also abandoning is not a solutin would they have abandoned their children for the same circumstances?
