Have you struggled with weight loss for a long time? Have you considered bariatric/weight loss surgery? What else did you try that didn't work? Have you already had the procedure? Which type of surgery did you choose and why? Are you happy with the results? Did you have any complications? Would you do it again? Would you recommend it to others? I'd like to write a short article on the whys and why nots, the good and the bad, and what to expect when considering any type of weight loss surgery. Could you help me out please?

I would definitely NOT consider surgery. I've seen documentaries and read a lot about the aftereffects of weight loss surgery and there are a lot more dangers than most people think. I have tried a lot of diets that didn't do me much good. The one that works for me is to eat anything I want but to carefully control the portions. A handful of corn flakes is NOT the same as measuring out the correct portion and I found most of my excess calories were coming from guessing the portions.

That's exactly what I want to show, the good AND the bad, which people it may benefit because nothing else has worked, why it may not be a good choice for most people, etc.

I would love to have some kind of surgery done for a quick fix but right now I am just watching what I eat and exercising. I need to lose about 50 pounds to be where I am most comfortable with.

Fifty would put me at a really healthy weight as well. It has just kept on creeping up for about twelve years now. Right after I had had some success with losing. Darn!!!!

I have not tried the surgery. I am applauding you on doing real life research for your articles.Great idea to ask around here. The most serious weight loss attempt I have made did work, but only as long as I stayed on a very restricted caloric count and took prescription diet pills and became OCD about exercise. I lost a lot of weight, and my mind wanted to lose more. It could have become an illness. I would not go to those extremes again, as they were not really healthy.

Oh yes, you must be careful. It can be an obsession that is as unhealthy (or more so) than being overweight. I struggle daily and can't find that happy medium. I've tried dieting, but I tend to take it to the extreme and then can't continue like that for long. I'm in the 'eat everything I can get my hands on' stage right now.

I have battled weight my whole life but I would never resort to surgery. It's just not an option for me. I figure as long as I'm able to lose weight with diet and exercise then I just need more determination to do it. Besides there's never a guarentee that having the surgery is going to work and that it isn't going to make the situation worse. **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~

The surgery alone would never work, you'd need a complete lifestyle change, and anyone will tell you that. There is no miracle cure to weight loss, it's all about eating right and getting excersize. I can't lose weight because I'm lazy and I like to eat. Until I change that about myself, I'll never lose weight.

Very true! I don't think it would work for me because I eat small portions, but would eat ALL DAY if I could. Since the surgery limits you to smaller portions, I'd probably fill it right back up in a short amount of time.

i am struggling to lose weight. but i am not in a hurry, i have modified my eating habits. though i have not lose weight. but at least i am eating healthy now. i avoid meat and oily foods and even sweet food. i am sticking with fish no soda and avoiding to much salty foods. so i am focusing on what goes in my mouth now, but next i will focus in having exercise daily and getting physically fit. i don't like any surgery. and i have learned to be patient to myself and i am not in a hurry and i don't expect to see results in one day. i just to savor each as it comes and enjoy each moment . i don't want to worry too much on how little weight i have lost each week. with proper lifestyle i will surely be able to lose or get into my goal. i will surely be healthy soon or for the months to come.

I need ot lose weight but in no way would I choose the surgeries even though at one time I had considered the lap band and bariatric surgery, I have 3 people in my family have it done and they have had nothing but problem after problem with it and they also ended up gaining some of their weight back. So the surgery helps for only a short while before people give in like any diet and goes off and starts eating and stretching their stomach back which can be dangerous. Also in alot of cases they lose weight fast right after the surgery and then they have alot of loose baggy skin that has to have another surgery to remove all the excess skin which then leaves alot of scares on your body..alot..some think it will give then the body of their dreams..yeah when their clothes are on with long sleeves..since the surgeries can leave one inch scars width and as long as their arm. or thighs..and all over..what good is that? Great body with clothes on but can't show it off with sexy clothes..and still have stomach upset and problems the rest of their lives. Can't eat or drink certain foods..it takes so much of their life away..it might just be best to get a life coach..and lose the weight the old fashion way and also give the body time to shrink the skin back slowly like it is meant to be..

I would not go for the surgery. I heard that if you have the surgery and if you are at a party, for instance, a wedding reception, or at a restaurant where there is a lot of food, you might decide to splurge and that would maybe loosen the staples or what is keeping your stomach from being full. Now normally if you have not had the surgery, but are on a weight loss program, you will think "ah, Susan (or whatever her name is) is getting married, and she wants me for the maid of honor and there will be a wedding dinner after wards. I guess I had better watch what I eat and do a few more work outs." so you will be prepared for it. But with the stomach staple you are used to not eating that much and the results would be disasterous. I would do more exercise, get some multi vitamins, find out if there is something in your diet you are missing (I need more chromium and as soon as I got some, I started to lose weight), and eat more fruits, veggies, and salads.

I am very depressed about my weight also. I used to be that skinny girl in high school, very energetic and now......nothing. I go to school for Nursing, have a hyper-active son and gained almost 100 lbs. I am considering the surgery. I watch what I eat, walk to the park with my son, go to his little league games, and try to eat more fruits and veggies. My downfall: emotional eating and no discipline. If i had something that will help me with those, I think I will be fine. My sister inlaw had the gastric bypass surgery and she did lose alot of weight and has some sagginess in her tummy but they also tell you to try and strength train before and after the surgery. Her downfall is that she will not take her vitamins on a regular basis and keep up with her B-12 shot. Other than that, she had no complications which we are all thankful for. Good luck to you and wish you the best.

I'm a little on the chumpy side, but no - I haven't (and wouldn't) considered any procedures. I walk every day, just to keep my heart pumping - but apart from that I know the best way to get excess weight off is to eat sensibly. Unfortunately, I don't mind a bit of cake or chocolate - though I've given up potato crisps. I have a weakness for iced coffee ... and low fat/skim milk varieties don't do it for me!

Hi Ldyjarhead, I've been in and out of weigh loss program, tried those crash diets, fed on tasteless healthy foods, even diet pills. Sure they made my weight go down, but I have no luck in maintaining them. I should say it's because I don't have much discipline, can't stick to a program because I easily miss food, and when I do, I tend to make up for the time that I starved myself and really eat a lot. I'm not brave enough to try procedures and/or surgeries though, to go under the knife is not my thing. I've seen more than enough complaints about surgeries turned nightmares on tv and in the news, I don't wanna be part of the statistics.

Oh, no! am not going into a surgery simply because i have to loose weight.i can do it the natural way, like dieting,exercising...most specially not drinking beverages like coke, or maybe lessen it a little. and my best method yet, was not to eat before 6 in the evening. it makes the tummy feel heavier eating at night.

I believe what we do with our body is a choice. before I weighed 210lbs and I was about 14. I tried losing weight, I did everything. I managed to get to get to 175 at the age of 16. Then I met the one that makes me the happiest. My true love. As soon as I moved in with him I've lost all my weight. its been a year or so I am almost 18 and weigh approx 128 lbs. I can tell you what happiness cured my weight. I would recommend if you become happy anything is possible.

Hello, when I was in school... I weight like 125lbs. I wore size 9 jean. I was stressful of loosing weight. So, I decided to control my eating habit. I cut down each meal and keep it down until I got it. then i wore size 3 then down to 1 and then 0. Now, I have two children and my weight is still 105lbs and size 0... Im happy with what I have now and I want to keep it this way.

i would never do bariatic surgery. you could only eat very very very few after doing the surgery and i heard the complications are frequent. i think it's better to change your eating habits and lifestyle, slowly.
