In 1984 when Winston finally betrays Julia it's because they are going to put his head in a cage full of hungry mice (or rats, I forget which). I'm not scared of little rodents like that, but that really sounds awful to me. What do you think of that?

Wow, I can barely even remember that part. This shows how long ago I read that book. But I do vaguely remember it being at the end.
I like most rodents, but not mice. I wouldn't kill them or purposely hurt them (well, I would feed them to snakes and other animals), but mice just don't like me. Every mouse I pick up and actually try to hold, I get bit by it. So in the past when I've had to feed them to other animals I would do it quickly. But even handling pet mice that people swear are friendly, I always get bit. So I would probably have to betray Julia too at that point.

Rats are pretty terrifying when I can't defend myself from them, but that goes for a lot of things besides that and I have no idea what Room 101 would hold for me. Probably quicksand.
Rats can and will tear you apart if they are desperate to get through and you can't put your objections to that into practice; their teeth are quite formidable. I would probably be too busy screaming incoherently to betray anyone, though.
