I’m sure that most of us here at MyLot have seen the classic horror movies where some dumb bonehead sticks his hand in a malfunctioning garbage disposal only to draw back a bloody stump. Personally I wouldn’t stick my hand in one even if it was laying innocently in a box…I just don’t trust them LOL. We have one and I’m always careful not to get my hands too close to it and I try to remember to put the little plastic cover over it when I’m washing silverware so none fall in it.
Do you have one? Would you put your hand in it if it wasn’t working? Have you ever known anyone to lose a hand in one?

Thanks for today's laugh...
No, I don't have a garbage disposal and wouldn't use one even if I did. I compost food scraps.
And besides, that'd be a long and tedious way to get rid of a body...

You don't see a lot of garbage disposals where I live in Ontario. I don't know of any house around here where I have one, and if there are Canadians out there who do have one, I'd like to know about it. When I lived in the USA for a year, we had one, and it was great, although I never got my hand close enough to it for anything to happen. LOL

Yes, I have one, and yes, I have stuck my hand in it. Not to feel around, but to grab a spoon that falls into it. I don't know how those stupid people seem to drop diamond rings down it when there is a killer loose in the house, and of course the switch to it always seems to be on the other side of the kitchen, so it is convienent for the crazy person to turn on while the idiot is digging for the ring. I always make sure it is off and there is no way anything can accidentally flip it on, when it is all safe, I stick my hand down and retrieve the missing spoon. ( I say spoon because I have this one spoon that always seems to drop down there...nothing else) Maybe the spoon wants my hand to get eaten!!!

Just looking at the picture makes me feel scary. I have one, but operated only if top is on, however, I don't trust mechanical equipment, too many people lost their fingers...

NO....I have seen it in the movies but I have never heard of one losing their hand in real life...that would be terrible! My ex brother in law however was working in a bakery when his hand got into the big beaters...and the switch was on the wall too far away to shut off the power....they reattachec most parts....and after years of physical therapy....Knitting....he does quite well.

I have never know anyone who got hurt by one but im sure it has happen. I did know of a quality control lady at a meat production plant where a meat grinder was plugged up. The safety switch was broken and she lost half her arm from it. I do not know why she used her hands to unstop it. You would think she would have known better. I have also heard tales of illegal aliens disappearing at meat companies. By then hands of their own friends.

Hin twoey68,
I haven't got one of those and don't reall want it, what if you have young children and they stuck their hands down in the hole, i wouldn't like to think,I rather just have a bin to throw scraps in.

It's funny how we do stuff like that. I've had to get stuff out of the disposal before. But, I always remember that according to the manufacturers you are not supposed to do that. Never known anyone who was injured by one though.

hi twoey never knew about anyone losing a hand. I once
did accidentally drop a spoon into our disposal only
to hear it thumping and grinding as I hurried to turn it
off and retrieve the poor, groundup mutilated spoon. I
looked at it and thought oh wow what if that had been
my hand. I am always v ery careful not to stick my hand
down where it c an get as chewed up as my poor spoon was.

I do have a garbage disposer & i have stuck my hand in it to get a spoon or something that has dropped in it but not w/it on. THAT WOULD BE PRETTY STUPID. I don't use it much, not as much as i should really.

I'm terrified of those garbage disposals, Twoey ... and we don't have one. But there was one in a holiday apartment we stayed in once, and my little son loved putting things in it! They are really creepy - and no, I definitely wouldn't put my hand anywhere near one!

my husband has a rule at work
its not the best safety rule for a crew of women but it works nicely with my hubby's all male crew
his rule is "dont stick your hands anywhere that you wouldnt stick your pen!s!"
crude and to the point but effective LOL

We have a garboadge disposial here in our home. I would never stick my fingers down one for any reason. we do use the plastic cover at stop for the drain and we are also carful not to put siverwhere down the sink where it is locacated. I have never knowed anyone who was injured by one and I do not even want to think aobut getting hurt by one.
