I got scalded with hot oil today while frying fish. Luckily, I have my ol' faithful tube of toothpaste with me in the kitchen on standby for minor burns like this. I always apply toothpaste on minor burns and it works wonders. It really soothes the burning sensation and I just love it. But bare in mind, this only works for minor burns. What about you? Have you heard of toothpaste for minor burns? Or do you have any other miracle tips for burns? Do share.

Hi! Up until last winter i had never heard of using toothpaste on a burn. I got burned, and i just happened to have been online chatting with an older friend, and i told him what had happened and he told me to put toothpaste on it. I thought toothpaste? But i tried it and it worked, and ever since it is what i use for burns, and i even put it on my children when they have a burn. It is great. I keep a tube handy just for that one purpose. Happy mylotting.

Glad that the toothpaste helped you during your emergency. I just wonder what is it in toothpaste that makes it so good on burns. It even prevent the burnt area from getting bubbly.

Nope never heard the toothpaste trick. What I have heard is if you apply mustard to the burn immediately it will soothe it. It works. Butter was another one I have heard but I didn't like the outcome. Cold water, ice.. all remedies I've heard before.

I put butter on a burn and it sizzled and cooked my skin. I never thought it was a good idea. The mustard actually draws the heat away from the burn. It is very soothing.

Cold water and ice are the two items I dare not put on my burns as it causes blisters. I've heard of butter, but it's messy. Mustard, never heard about it doing the trick. I still like my toothpaste. :)

I don't have tips for burns, but I do have one for toothpaste instead. I heard that if you want to get rid the smell of onions from your fingers, try to wash your hands with toothpaste. I never tried it before, but will do someday just out of curiosity and if it works, then I can add it to my list of tips.

submerryn, yes the cooling sensation of toothpaste is good for the burns. Alternatively, I use the light soya sauce if I get burn from the kitchen. :)

Through this discussion I've learnt that butter is a good thing too for minor burns as well as aloe vera. And someone told me that toothpaste is good for insect bites too!

Yes, I've been using toothpaste too. I always keep one around since I am a clumsy person, always injured myself one way or another. It helps if you let the burn under running water for awhile too. My mom tend to put soy sauce on hers but I think it won't do much good. Somehow we do have weird treatment here...

I dont like to put the burn under running water as it tends to get bubbly. I just get the toothpaste and apply a thick layer on the burn and leave it there for some time. Only when it has dried up will I wash it away.

Yes, we use toothpaste as a soother to work on our minor burns. It has miracle effects. But of course we do need to get a better or specify cream for the wound to heal fast and fully recover. Can not depend the toothpaste to heal your wound. Once you get the first aid from toothpaste, hurry get a proper cream . The toothpaste is used for emergency if you are run out of the proper medicine or cream or minor burns.

I use toothpaste and that's it. No proper cream. I guess I need to run to the pharmacy to get some proper creams for burns.

Hi Merryn, this is indeed a very informative and interesting discussion, so I must participate too...lol Yes, I have heard of toothpaste is good for minor burns especially in the kitchen.. 1) I learnt from my mum is light soya sauce....hmmm, I always worried that it might make a dark scar coz soya sauce are darker colour... but it is better than nothing during emergency. 2) Then I discovered there is toothpaste (used toothpaste tube that still have a bit of remained toothpate which the tube has been rolled up yet if squeeeeeze still will have some, so out of curiosity, I asked my mum, what the toostpaste doing in the kitchen rack. So it seems toothpaste do wonders for minor burns and cool the burning sensation. this is a temporary measure till you get a better treatment from your first aid box, or doctor) 3) Then the aloe vera age emerged... almost every houses plant aloe vera for its medicinal benefits. You can eat it and make drinks...not forgetting the inside gel is extremely effective for minor wounds too! Introduced by my mum again :) 4) Aloe Vera gel in plastic bottle is available in most pharmacies. My eldest sister will buy and give it to me for emergency use. Very effective and cooling too. This gel also can apply for reducing fever, rub on the forehead and body of the person runs with fever. This is good for those people who are allergy to fever medicine like paracetamol, alternative to using wet towel to mob the person. 5) A very special medicated herbal cream sold in China. It is claimed to be extremely effective leaving no scar. Specially formulated for burns... Saw it selling while I was visiting Shanghai and nearby province. Many tourists will buy...those who used it before will asked others to help to buy...so that means have living evidence... but the price is not cheap, about nearly RM100 per bottle...like our big moisturising cream size.

I've heard about that Shanghai cream too! Really effective? I've not tried it though. I'll never use soy sauce because of it's color too!

This recipe was passed down to me by my grandmother. The cool sensation of the toothpaste certainly helps to soothe the pain and the burning sensation. I was adviced not to put the burn section under cold running water or I will get a bad blister. Anyway, of late, my mother aslo advised me to use aloe vera extract because it is apparently better. She has aloe vera plants in her garden and whenever, she gets burned, she will rush out to the garden, break an aloe vera leaf and apply the sap on the skin. I've no aloe vera plant in my garden, and hence I am still relying on this ancient medication, the good old toothpaste.

'Recipe' huh Rodlkm? Hahaha.. I was told not to put the burn section under running water for the very same reason too. Maybe our parents are related! Anyway, I dont have aloe vera too so, toothpaste it is for me.

Toothpaste really works for bee and ants bite..... A year before, a bee bite me and i have a pain that was really frustrating.. My neighbour told me about toothpaste. I applied but i didn't have faith in that.. After a minute, that pain went off without any sensation..
