Music is dance - Music is important for someone to dance like they have never danced before.
The basics are in every type of dance and are the most important to any dancer as they all use them and will use them till they aren't going to be a dancer anymore. The basics are what make a dancer a dancer. You must learn them before trying to accomplish any type of dance you would like to accomplish I was a dancer for 17 years and loved every minute of it. I would have never changed it for the world, but when i was little of course i couldn't just go out to be in a competition and dance, i had to learn the basics when i was little and then i grew up to be a competitor dancer, because i finally accomplished the basics of dance i knew that had to be done before i could get out and do what was the best of dance. Dancing takes a lot of skills and hard skills and in whatever type of dance you want to do there are going to be things you might get angry about and not want to do it anymore, but you have to put your mind and soul and your body into what you want to do, its more than just dancing, for some people its their life and what they want to do. Dancing will always be a part of my life and i do pick apart dancers still even though i don't dance anymore, since i know the basics of dance i know that there are dancers out there that don't now them, but still dance and try their best at it and they do what they can. Enjoy dancing.

It would definitely be to your benefit to master the basics. All of the more difficult steps you will learn are more or less a progression of your basic skills, so even if you're physically able to perform more advanced skills the way you are now, it is still a good idea to fine tune your basics. It will make your dancing a whole lot easier. It may not seem like it now, however, you'd be surprised how much your more complicated steps get easier as your basics become more and more efficient. The theory behind this repetitive training is muscle memory. Basically, this means that after you train a certain type of movement over a specific period of time, it eventually becomes more and more second nature for you because your body remembers it. Prime examples of this are riding a bike, and babies learning to walk. The reason your body remembers it is because there is a thought to be a great deal of brain activity going on as well. Because of this, I am a believer that dance is 90% mental. It isn't just about conditioning your body to perform maneuvers, but also about being in the proper mindset and also having the proper attitude. To make the process less overwhelming, try breaking down what you've learned into smaller parts, and go over each section slowly (be sure someone shows you how to do it correctly to avoid injury), and as you gradually become comfortable, increase the tempo until you can perform at the pace that is wanted. Maybe set aside a couple minutes per day to break down a specific step or element, and do a set number of repetitions (again, don't over-do it). You'd be surprised at how much this helps get the movement into your body and how much better your dancing becomes as a result. Best of luck, and take heart!

Like any skill, you can only do it well by practicing. My wife and I spent about four years doing dancing, and we had to practice a lot to keep up with the class (and we weren't the worst dancers by any means). There's no such thing as raw talent that just gets on and dances. The best dancers in the world practice a LOT! http://socyberty.com/advice/we-learn-to-dance/

Absolutely!! Repetition in they key. There is not getting around it. You must practice until the proper technique becomes second nature (called muscle memory). I have been teaching dance since 1973 and I never had a student who was a good dancer who did not practice a lot. Practice makes permanent!

I think that doing dance is a very personal thing. We are probably coming from two different directions, seeing something from two different angles. You probably have plans to do formal dancing since you are with a teacher and to follow their rules is probably the only way to learn the ins and outs of the type of dance you want to learn. However, if you are someone who enjoys dancing but aren't going to lessons, I think any type of dancing is OK. Dancing is a freedom and once you learn some basic moves you will probably feel more comfortable at the studio. But if it is not for you then, quit! Maybe you should do something else.
