Foreign Films

I have watched many foreign language films and find most easy to understand and follow. Recently a friend was talking about films that are dubbed in different languages and how different it makes the film appear. Translations tend to come out differently from the original intent. A film made in US for example may come across differently in say French. Would like to hear other people's opinion of this.

I hate that whenever you go to a south-european country every single program in the television is syncronised. It totally ruins the movie or program. I mean - they even syncronize FRIENDS! In my country they show all the movies and programs on the original language - but with subtitles. That's exactly how it should be.

In my country (Denmark) films aren't dubbed, we use subtitles instead. I like it that way, and I enjoy listening to the original language. There is one exception though. Films for small children are often dubbed, but that is different, because they are not able read the subtitles. I have lived in Italy for a while, and it seemed strange to me that all the films were dubbed into Italian, because I am used to the original language and subtitles. I have experienced the same thing in many other European countries.

All of us here understand English so we don't need subtitle in English movie. When the movie is Chinese or in other language I think translating it is will do like dubbing. Here in the Philippines Korean and Spanish movies or soap operas are dubbed in Tagalog so we can understand the story it doesn't affect the story because they translate it carefully. Sometimes you going to amazed in the dubbers because it is difficult to follow how they speak.

I hate dubbed films.I prefer to hear the language and read subtitles. But eve then you are getting a different version than the original.Not everything can be literally translated.

I like French films but they would've to be subbed in English. There are slight differences when it comes to translation but not so much that it alters your whole perception of the film. Well, that is, unless the translation is really really bad. :-)

I actually love foreign films with english subtitles. I find that foreign films are more realistic and simplistic than most American made films. In the west, our movies always contain really outrageous scenarios and impossible relationships, etc. But in foreign films, a lot of it is true to life, and very poetic. I like being able to interpret the movie myself through the subtitles. It makes for interesting debates with friends when someone asks "why would he/she do that?".
