Do you put plastic flowers in your home?

I know that hotels and malls had become more colorful with the exquisite flower arrangements that definitely livened these places. I am reluctant though to decorate my own home with plastic flowers. They gather so much dust much too soon and cause breathing problems. My friends though say plastic flowers in a vase make the dinner table or the living room or even a bedside mini even more homely. What do you think?

Hi,
Yes, I do use artificial flowers as decoration in my house. I prefer artificial than real at home because it's more economical as you don't need to replace it everyday, it's easier to maintain and the colors don't fade easily and definitely the petals don't drop one by one LOL. It makes my place look better and it adds life to the already homey atmosphere.

I love plants however, im not a farmer. The only plant i was ever sucessful with was a bamboo plant and thats because all ya got to do is make sure they have water on them. I have fake plants. They are not plastic flowers but are made of fabric. To clean them you can swish them around in a bucket of soapy water them rinse in the shower. They do make a place look better. And they are so light weight i can hang them on a cup hooks instead of making holes in the ceiling.

Hi Eileen, No I do not like plastic flowers in my home or outside my home. They are a little tacky for me and are a big dust magnet as you had said. If I am going to have flowers in my house, they will be real ones. They are much prettier and the smell so nice. I have several different varieties growing in my yard through out Spring, Summer and Fall and I will cut them and put them in different rooms for the look and fragrance in my home. In the Winter time my husband may bring in a bouquet of flowers every so often, a very nice surprise when he does.
I have seen many houses that use the plastic flowers outside in their "gardens" too. I just rather have real ones.

One of my hobbies is gardening. It relaxes me at the end of the day. I do both veggies and flowers. Reaping in the rewards is so worth the work put into them. It is a shame you do not live by me, I always share my flowers and veggies with family, friends and neighbors. I much rather spread them out than just sit and wath them die on the stems.

I do envy you. I wish I could have those real fresh flowers all the time. But plastic flowers in a garden is beyond me.

I don't see anything wrong with using plastic flowers in my home, for one thing I don't have a green thumb so if I had something that was alive, I would kill it in no time..lol. I have a few plants and my mom takes care of them whenever she comes over, thats the only reason they're still alive..lol. I use plastic flowers all the time, I change them with the seasons.

I think I am not blessed with a green thumb either. I do dig, anyway. My friends say I am pathetic. I am the only one who has a jungle for a garden. Your mom's great.

I can’t stand plastic flowers of any kind. I recently put a plastic plant in the garbage and my husband retrieved in dismay because he loved it and I thought it was tacky. We agreed that it can sit on the patio table as long as it is not in the house!
I have a live green plant indoors at the moment which I’ve had for a while and managed not to kill ; that’s the problem real plants have a tendency to die on me!

Ha ha. The men must have a say. Well, I am glad you met halfway. As to the plants dying on you, I suggest talking to them. I do it all the time. Seems to be working.

we do. and i don't like it. it collects dirt and it doesn't smell nice. i'd prefer fresh flowers but they are expensive and need to be changed often. hmmm.... i don't know. flowers do create an atmosphere don't they? bright colors can do a lot to cheer us up. but plastic?? hmm... for those who can get and can afford fresh flowers should go for it. for those who can't plastic is good.

I have one vase of plastic flowers in my main floor powder room. I wanted somethingn to match the decor and since it is blue, plastic flowers are the only flowers I could get in that colour. I originally put them in a water pitcher with white tissue paper to cover the stems but recently I acquired a ton of shells of different shapes and sizes. I decided to fill the jug with these shells to cover the stems. I think it looks kind of cool.
Yes, they do collect dust but that can be easily remedied. Put salt in a paper bag, then put the flowers in head first and shake. The salt will remove the dust from the flowers.

Great tip! Artificial flower shops should post the cleaning method for the education of homemakers. Now I will consider plastic flowers as decoration.

I loathe plastic flowers. I can barely tolerate silk flowers. I much prefer living plants and flowers although I cannot get a flower to bloom indoors. I keep trying to grow gardenias and I get great foliage I can't get them to bloom. The buds fall off before they have a chance to open.
Back to the question, I keep a variety of plants in my house, very calming to me.

Plants and flowers do have that calming effect. Can't last a day without looking at my garden, the state of which has much to be desired. I like the Japanese style - simple and serene. But I also like the grand well polished ones the British behold in their estate homes. If you give me bushes, I would also enjoy and love it.

Oh my god are you kidding? AAAHHHHH CCHOOOO!
Big sneeze!
No plastic flowers nor artificial flowers. The only way I would consider anything like that is if it were made of silk and those can be expensive for entire floral arrangements.
To keep dust out, try spraying a bit of Scotch Guard to make them easier to just rinse off.

I become sneezy too with dusty decorative flowers. I will look for that expensive silk. Someone suggested it too but now I am having second thoughts. I will just look anyway.

yes, i have plastic flowers in my home. i do dust them and it is hard to get all the dust off. but if they get to looking to back i will run water on them in my bathtub and then let them dry in the bathtub. usually i will have to wait until the next day to put them back where i had them but at least they is not more dust on them. i have had no problems cleaning my plastic flowers this way.

We don't have any plastic flowers at home. I too have heard that keeping plastic flowers at home causes brethin problems and other deseases. It is advised not to keep anything inside the house. BEtter keep them in sit out or verantha or something like that where there good supply of air and light.
These flowers are madde from waste materials ie recycled plastic and the health hazards are many. It should also be kept away from the reach of small children.

I tend to agree with you; I think it's much better to have real flowers on the table. While plastic flowers can look pretty, and I do use them when I decorate for a party at the synagogue, I think that's about all they're good for - single use, not long-time use. You are so right about the fact that plastic flowers attract dust, and out here in the high desert, that would mean way more dusting then I'd ever get done. LOL. Flowers do brighten up a place, but why not use real flowers? Or how about green houseplants?

I go for the houseplants, too. The lucky bamboo is easy to take care. Must be a challenge to live in a high desert.

I would much rather use real flowers, but if people are going to come over to your house and they are allergic I would also use fake. It just depends on the person I guess. But with real flowers you can actually smell them and they smells so good. But like I said it is up to the person.

True. Our preferences really differ. What counts is how comfortable we are in our own homes.

I think silk flowers look just as pretty as fresh flowers, and last ALOT longer. As for the smell, if you're putting some silk roses, or whatever your choice, into a vase I would suggest putting a few drops of incense oil of that flower smell onto your foam (if you're using foam). If you're not using foam you can always put a few drops on a bit of material in the bottom of your vase.
I've never had any trouble cleaning my artificial flowers, just blow them over with a hairdryer (if silk), or wipe them with a damp cloth (if plastic).

If there's a will, there's a way. You're good. I never thought of incense. Thanks for sharing the technique.

Plastic flowers are terribly old fashioned. My fake flowers are made from different types of fabric and they are very real looking. I love flowers but it's hard to grow them where I live. My different arrangements of fake flowers look beautiful and cheery throughout my home. To clean them I swish them in warm soapy water and let them dry...no more dust....plastic flowers can also be cleaned in this way.

I don't have any in my home. I have one silk plant that is in the kitchen but for plastic I don't do them.....I see alot of people have them outside and they fade and I would rather see green stems without flowers on them then faded plastic flowers....if they are some of higher quality.....I would use them in a wreath for the front door but if they start to fade I would pitch them.

A wreath is a good idea. Thanks. I am not an artist but I will shape some to adorn my home.

I think plastic flowers are kinda tacky. You are right about them getting too dusty, they are also a pain to clean . My mom use to place plastic flowers and plants around the house when I was a kid and I never did like them. Id rather have fresh flowers when they are in season growing outside in my yard, I just trim what I need and place them in a vase of fresh water..I have roses and lilys growing during the spring. But sometimes for special occasions when it's not flower season I will buy fresh flowers from the market and place them at the dinner table .

hi eileen, when i was younger, i remember that my mom used to decorate our bathroom with artificial plants and flowers in our living room.because it's more practical to use it as it will even lessen the danger of dengue.
I have to agree with your friend, artificial flowers will make your home naturally great!

My mum used to put plastic flowers in our home. It is cheaper and save money than buying fresh flower requently. It does gathers dust but then you can just wipe it with wet cloth occasionally or when you feel like cleaning.
With plastic flower you can only have the beautiful view of floral arrangement but if you use fresh flower you can also have the nice and lovely smell around.

I guess it really depends on your housekeeping skills! If you clean your home enough there should be no problem with anything in your house collecting dust right?
It also depends on where you're putting the plastic flowers on, I preffer real flowers on my dining table, which I change out every week, but on a higher ledge by the front entrance of my home I am looking to put a silk plant arrangement as I am not enthralled on going up and down every week to change an arrangement that no one would really notice unless they look up.
So again it depends on your upkeeping and location, then again I read that live plants or flowers in your home brings good "chi" or energy, so there's something else for you to think about :)

I have the chi in my home, ha ha. I also kinda want people to notice my decorating effort. No success in that. Sigh!
