To those who are currently working, would you go for a new job that pays you a lower salary? I did that once - in fact, it was a risk as I didn't know what to expect in the new company though the job specifications are similar. Well, I never regretted doing so because I've learnt a lot of new things and I've great friends. The pay I'm getting now is higher too - after 4 years while in the previous company, there was no increment despite being there for 3 years.
So would you risk taking a new job with a lower pay? What about those who have been retrenched? Would you?

I don't have enough courage to take the risk. I worked as a manager and my salary is quite good. Then I resigned because I gave birth. I tried to apply again last year but the offer is too low, I know myself I'm a workholic, dedicated person and that is the reason why my husband asked me stay at home and look for another opportunities online. I'm glad you made it! Happy myloting!

I can understand the risk but I think sometimes when there's a real need, then we have to take the risk. After all, having a fixed monthly income (though it's low) is better than not having any. It's the employers' market nowadays. They want you, they'll take you but with lower pay; you don't want, fair enough. They'll get someone who will, or push the existing ones to the limit. I think you know what I mean.:)
Well, I do hope you'll be able to get a good job soon.

Yeah, your right every single day should be fruitful. But really I don't have any regrets, I'm enjoying my son and at the same time got projects online. I prefer a homebased job. I can't go back to an eight hour job, don't have nanny for my son. Thanks and happy myloting!

hi haiershen, it's fine if you don't want to accept a lower pay job because not everyone wants to anyway. However, sometimes we have to do it because we're not happy with the current job any more, so it's best that we move on to a job which offers better terms, though not necessarily higher pay. :)

I have before. It all depends on the circumstances. How much less the job pays, and if it would be enough to cover all my bills and such. Sometimes the job with lower pay has better opportunities and maybe at the new job you will be able to advance quickly and end up making more than you did at the old job. Sometimes it's worth it, sometimes not.

I was among who have been retrenched, and I have been looking for a job since February. Actually, my last application offered me a salary that's a bit lower than my last and I said I'll accept it.
However, I still will consider the stability of the company which I think is the more important these days.
After all, what's the use of a big salary if the company is shaky?

As of this days that finding a job, is very hard. I don't think we can find a job that really great and give us higher salary.
My views is that: Will accept that jobs, even if it lower salary to support living while looking for a good jobs that pays higher salary...there is no wrong with that because it will increase your experience and also increase possibilities of looking for a good jobs.
I think for practical reason "yes" I accept the jobs. If I have enough savings to finance living until looking for a better. I will not accept it...

If you have a big ambition, there is little room for development, and you are not happy with the present work, better try your luck in a new job. Salary is usually the upfront consideration, but more important factors are whether it is in a good business, whether it is a new company, and whether you have interest in the work.
Try your luck, and have a try.

I would if it is a job that satisfies more than my current one, granted I have to be able to pay my bills still. You can have a job that pays very good money and still be miserable. I learned to never chase money just chase happiness, because money can not buy that anyways.

Indeed you are very brave kevchua, I will not do that if I am stable in my job and there is no other "side effect" affecting me in the current position. For me to leave a job to take a lower pay, this job must be really promising, and it will not stay for long. However, if I am retrenched, then I have nothing to say, as I have only choose to either continue to be jobless, or having at least the minimum to feed myself.. I am not a risk taker in job change, provided something really tick me off, and I am willing to go jobless than being unhappy in the position.. extreme right?

Well cwong77...yeah, I'm brave but for a good reason. I was totally fed up with the previous employer. Though the pay was good, I felt that I was stuck and couldn't learn anything anymore. Anyway, the new job is at a far more renown establishment, so I went for it without thinking too much. After all, opportunity doesn't knock on my door too often. Sometimes in life, you need to lose something in order to gain something better later. :)
TQ for the great response.

Yes, I will take up a new job that pays low provided the company is a good one, and I have good prospects than the previous one. There is no point in working for a company that pays you more and where you do not feel at home and no peace of mind.

I am already in one now. My friends keep asking me why I am staying in the same college that I have been teaching in, for the past 12 years. My students are even asking me the same. One reason is perhaps the teaching hours. I get to go back sharp at 4.30pm. Unless there are meetings, which are not so often.
Secondly, my students. I care enough to stay.
Thirdly, I am already comfortable where I am. If I move to a new working environment, it is re-learning again the process of fitting in. It may not be difficult, but it may not be easy.
But if I was retrenched, then of course I would go for a job with an even lower pay. I have to eat, right?

i personally think it depends on what you job you are looking for. some work for the sake of money solely while some to satisfy their interest. as for me, i look for both because i still need to support my expenses. my current job has been my dream job since young. however, i always feel i am a little underpay despite my qualifications and experience. nevertheless, i love the working place as i have a bunch of superbly nice colleagues and pretty understanding boss too! besides, my job is rather stress free. :)

I've been working in a very crowded city. I love my job, but DO hate the city, the traffic is really really bad. I don't think it is effective to work in this city. I'm thinking of moving to my homeland, a countryside, where the standard of salary is way much lower than in the city. I'm currently looking for that chance, and when I get the chance to move, I'll take it without doubt.

Ooh.. I forgot to add. my husband is even more extreme than me. He left his previous job for a new job which pays him less than 1/8 of his salary that time - commission based, because it is the first step of our move to countryside. I know that sounds silly but he made up his mind, his previous job didn't make him comfortable anymore. I'm not worried about our spending with our less income, because I know my husband is a hard worker and very soon - he will make himself much more successful than before.

Hi kevchua!
Normally, people would transfer to a company that would promise a higher pay. However, in my case, I guess, moving to another company that pays a lower salary is not at all bad. Of course it all depends on the reason why I have to move to that company. If I like what I do or enjoy my tasks then that would be enough to justify a transfer to a company that pays a lower salary.

Yes i will go for a new job that pays lower salary but it should not pay so less that i cannot manage my daily operations.Nowadays it is very difficult to get a job so instead of just waiting for the right job we can do the job and get experience. It will later help us to get job in a higher post in the company. It will also fetch us a good salary.

I would do that if I feel really uncomfortable with my last job. Why not, as long as I feel comfortable, because I believe situation and friends in workplace can effect my working performance. If I'm work in my best condition then sure I can reach higher salary in that job.
Btw, it's nice to hear you can decide what's the best for yourself without being affected by the salary. Congratulations!

Hi chrysantflower, yes that's exactly what I had in mind when I decided to quit and join a company that offers a lower salary. It's not the money that counts - i mean, as long as I'm able to support myself, it's fine. It's the environment and learning possibilities that helped me make that decision. Work life is not merely about getting big salaries - it's more.

Life is all about taking risks. If you think that job will give you a lot of opportunities to grow and is something that fits your passion and interest, then i think it's worth the risk. So what if it pays lower, at least you'll be rewarded in other ways. Besides, if you stay in a job where you feel like you are not growing anymore, even if the pay is huge, i don't think it's worth keeping.
A lot of discontented people roam the world now it's because they don't follow their passions.
So yes, i would definitely go for a new job I am absolutely passionate about even if the pay is less. Life is not all about money. It's more of taking risks and making a difference. Happy mylotting!!!

That's true, karenrosesalazar. There are risks in life, and when you take the risk, you might fall or fail; on the contrary, you might succeed. We have to be bold about it. In general, those who have taken risks will fair better in their career because they'll learn. They'll wake up and walk on their feet again :)
