This is my first time coming here and discuss with different people from different areas and countries. so nice to see everybody. I graduated from my university and find a job in a five star hotel to be a guest relation officer. So many people admired me because they thinked it's a good job for ladies. You can stay in the lobby and smile to everyone,to practise your English because everyday you treat foreigners,to be confidence. but I feel very worried because I think I do not have a major, just chatting. Maybe everyone can instead of me to do this job.and it's service, no people want to stay in a hotel for whole life. I wanna to go out, I mean to other country to learn a MBA project, but I must wait 2 years. so may I asked you do you think it's a good job for girls do the job in a hotel? PS: I come from China

It seems that you are looking for a more intellectually stimulating job. I too had the same dilemma. During my 4th year in college (I finished a Bachelor degree in Tourism), I participated at the 4-month Work and Travel Program in the US (note: I come from the Philippines). I worked at the hotel rotating in different departments like housekeeping, Front office, Food and beverage. I worked at the front desk most of the time. It was a good practice for customer service but I'm a research development and project management- oriented type of person meaning I prefer to pursue intellectually stimulating tasks. The salary Im getting at the hotel was pretty good but I realize I want more than just earn good money. Right now Im working at a government agency where I assist in product research and development in the Tourism Industry. It not a glamorous job but it has its perks. I like being recognize with my outputs and not just my smile. By next year, I intend to participate in an internship program. After that, I want to take a Master's course. Hopefully I can come back in the Department or another agency with increased qualification and exposure. I believe your current job is a good exposure for you. Have you been working there for long? Stay there for a few years, try to gain as much experience and networks/contacts. If you can afford to study while working, then do so. This way, you can maximize your time and not let you mind become stagnant. It will also help you build your CV . you need to build a competitive CV if you want to study outside of your country. Its also good to gain experience in different travel and hospitality establishments but dont let it stop you from exploring other career path. Good luck on your career!

You are so nice giving me more advise. Maybe you are right. I just have one year work experience at this hotel and I think maybe I am too ambitious. You know if people do the same job day by day, they will feel boring about it. I think it's my status. It's not easy to get a job at a government in China and that's why more and more graduate choose the company as the first step of their career life.Maybe I can stay longer in my hotel now and gain some new things. Thank you so much.

Hi. It's my pleasure to share my insights on this. Your post caught my attention because I can relate to it. I guess you got burned out with your work because it's very monotonous. Yes I understand. Actually, I was at the right place and at the right time that's why I got my current job. OH and it's perfectly ok to be 'ambitious'. As one of my mentors would say, sky's the limit so always reach for the stars. You have to set high standards for yourself so that even if you don't achieve your goal, you will surely get the next best thing. Goodluck on your chosen career path! and have fun in mylot!

I don't think its a bad job, it is goof because atleast your not working in a bar, And I think the hotel you are working in is a decent hotel. My mom use to tell me dont always think of what other people will say about what your doing, just hink of your purpose of getting the job and be happy about it. Besides who knows what that first step will lead you too.

Of course your present job,in 5-star hotel and with a good pay, may satisfy girls at your age. Considering the global economy's downturn, it is a job. Meanwhile, however, hospitality cannot be treated as a long-time career, like you stated,it is a springboard to lead you to a shinier position.I can see your ambition in you.

i dont see anything wrong with females getting a job in hotels as like what you have said here. it is still a good job, it may not be that stimulating but at least it pays you monthly. consider the people you will meet here, get to know them and learn from them. i have some friends way back who works in hotel industry and love what they are doing. i think this is just not the field for you that is why you are feeling that way. i can say after you have done that 2 years waiting, go ahead and pursue your ambition, it is always good to be in a workplace where you find yourself happy and satisfied working in.
