How often do you say "Thank you"?

You are at a crowded mall and are having difficulty managing your umpteen parcels. You have to press the elevator button. For this, you have to bend and keep the parcels on the floor. While you are pondering which one to place first, a hand presses the button and you get a smile from the person. Do you?
1. Smile, say Thank you with relief.
2. Remain gruff, say Thank you anyway.
3. Don't thank. Why did he bother? Is he a serial killer?
PS: I would surely opt for option 1. What do you think? :)

I'd smile and thank them. Serial killers? lol.
but i once had a lot of bag in my hands, just came back from grocery shopping. And i asked a male (maybe a teenager or slightly older), i asked for him to press the 11th floor button. He said "Do it yourself". LOL!!! at first i was quite, then i was struggling to laugh. btw, i said please, and everything, so i was in no way to blame here. but i found it funny, very immature of him.

I can bet, you have met one of those "types". Hee hee. BTW, he wouldn't have been taught to be nice to people. Who knows how he grew up. :)

Kids emulate what they see around them. If they see nice, polite parents, they grow up with all these nice habits instilled in them from childhood. But if they see squabbling parents, they also tend to grow up with a lot of hatred and bitterness.

I pick door #1 or choice #1. I find that saying "Thank You" is a way of acknowledging a fellow human being and helping them to know that you appreciate an act of kindness. If we do not say "Thank You" it is almost like we are shouting "I expected you to do that." That, to me, is just plain rude.

Yes, it would be rude. Plus it would also deter the person from passing the good vibes to other people. So, we must all just pass on the good feeling and say thank you with a smile.

Yes, this is the best option. Even If I feel grouchy, I do appreciate someone's politeness. :)

hi tutor! well, i would say i choose the first option. i think what the person just did was very nice. and for sure it deserves a thank you. in fact, in my opinion, if anyone does you a favor and it's free, i think you are bout to say "thank you". of course that would be different if you paid for it because you no longer need to thank the person but just show them the money. saying thank you is both therapeutic to the one who said it, and to the one it's addressed. oh by the way, "thank you" for this discussion. very interesting!

Thank you, tomjoad. Many people who grow up with a lot of hatred and distrust tend to be grouchy all their lives. When they meet others they rub off their bad vibes on them. These are the ones who dont smile at you back, look nasty and are generally rude. I guess we have to live with such and say thanks to others who make our day brighter. :)

I have actually seen a lady frowning at a salesgirl who wanted to just help her with a heavy bag. The lady literally barked at the poor girl. After that incident I am sure the girl would be vary of being helpful.

Of course I would thank the person and opt for option 1. I wouldn't want to be ungrateful especially since that person helped me out when they didn't have to. I like to show my appreciation every time I can.

I'd smile and say "Thank You", because it is so easy to do so, and it doesn't cost a cent.

The word "thank you" is a basic word me.Like the word "hello" or "hi".Saying thank you makes other person gratify each time they say to them.

I would choose option one too and would thank the person and smile at them. Infact I would probably tell them ''to have a nice day'' before exiting the elevator. I was raised to appreciate the efforts of other people and I genuinely am greatful for any help I receive. It's nice to think that people would go out of their way to help a stranger too.

Smile and the whole world will smile at you.
I will choose number 1, smile and say thank you with relief. When I was a kid, I was trained to always say Thank you and be grateful for little things or favor that has been given or done to us by other people. I even say thank you to all persons...my family and friends, my boyfriend and even a stranger. Its easy to make friends if we know how to smile naturally and be helpful to others.

Rightly said. Thanks for this. Its a nice line which we forget often. Smile and be nice. It doesnt cost us anything. Only facial muscles, that too we take so much pain to frown. We can as well smile and the world will smile with us. :)

I don't have to think twice to your questiion. I will say thank you for sure. I like to say 'thank you' whenever I get a chance and I feel people like to hear it. I daily say thanks to my driver who drops me at office and takes me back to hostel. It is his job and my hostel pays him for it. I don't have to necessarily say thanks to him, but I like to do that. Also, I found that i am the only person who thanks him daily.

Am sure you must be making his day brighter by doing that. Thanks for sharing your views with us daliaj. That is a very nice thing that you do daily. I just hope there are more of us who appreciate such small things in life. :)

I say thank you whenever I receive something from a person, whenever I feel that person deserve a thank you, whenever someone has receive me with all humbleness and care, whenver someone does something for me or has listen to what I have said. Thank you is one of the humble words which do not make us smaller but make us respectable.

Actually there have been times when I have said thank you and people have chided me saying, "Why are you thanking me, I like to do it for you." Well, in this case, this was my mother. I have also made it a point to say thanks to my in-laws. They used to feel odd earlier but now they have got used to it.
My take is: When we are at our polite best with strangers why should we show our nastier side to out family! They deserve our best side rather.

I would really opt for 1 and i have done it before to all those chivalrous men who have helped me press the lift button or have the door open for you to get in.
But after reading the third option - i'm sure the next time somebody helps me i will grow suspicious about them!! :P

Yes busky, it is avery nice thing to do. When we add a smile to the thanks, it gains weight. It really cheers up the person and you are making the good vibes do the round and not keeping it with you.

I'd say you hit the nail on the head with this question. It's so easy to get caught up in what we're so busy doing that it's easy to NOT 'say' thank you.
I was talking to a friend recently and we 'discovered' that there is no modern day, colloquial version of "thank you" in my mother tongue. Is that just a coincidence? Why is it that the language has evolved and adapted so easily to today's "tongue" and yet no such equivalent for the word exists? Is that a reflection of the speakers' attitudes....no need to thank, or perhaps, no need to show gratitude, or maybe even no need to feel grateful.
Who knows? I am no linguist, just a silent observer who is now thinking out loud in "my lot."
