Do you still celebrate birthdays as you get older?

Yesterday was Jake's birthday and it got me thinking about how birthday celebrations have changed as we've gotten older. Even though we're only 19, it's still a big change.
We used to have birthday celebrations with lots of friends and family and tons of presents and stuff and cake. Now, we wish them happy birthday, get them one thing, spend time together, and that's it. Sometimes we get a cake, sometimes not, depending on how we feel. Birthdays used to be such a big deal, but now they're just another day like every other.
What about you? Do you still have birthday parties and celebrations as you get older?

I am 16, turned it in June. We just got together, had a family dinner on my choice, then ate homemade cake and talked. I enjoyed it. My boyfriend and i shared the same birthday and we exchanged gifts, but my family did not get me anything. It made me kind of happy, feels like i am growing up much faster. (Not expecting toys from my family every year.) Guaranteed it would not have been this way if my grandmother was still with us, but give or take, i am alright with change.

You don't necessarily have to get toys for your birthday do you, though? I always look forward to that small gift or whatever. I had a sweet 16 party, though, so I got some neat things. My parents just gave me money, though, because I was saving to get a sewing machine at that point. :)
I'm sorry to hear that your grandmother isn't with you any more, but I'm glad that you still had a good birthday. ^_^

Hm...I still love lava lamps, too. I used to have a million stuffed animals, but I did finally get rid of them years and years ago. :)
That's a great way to look at it. Yes, I know the deceased are still with us, but that doesn't make the pain of their passing any easier to deal with sometimes. I lost my aunt this March and she was very close and I know she's still with me and that she's happy now and pain free, but it still hurts to have lost her.

Well, it is hard for me to grow out of stuffed animals and things like that. I love lava lamps and i consider almost anything a toy. I am not the kind of girl to have wanted a sweet sixteen. I just want to be with the people i love then try and grow up and out of my spoiled girl stage. Do not be sorry i lost my grandma, people live and die for unknown reasons, and i accept that. I think it is a healthy way to live when you get over a loss, i feel stronger. Also, i know she is still with me in my heart, i feel her. Just by the things she has left behind, i know she is always going to be with me.

Sounds like the best way for you to celebrate, in my opinion, would maybe just to see your family and spend time with them, or to hang out with some close friends. You certainly sound like the type of person that would enjoy doing something that doesn't cost anything, but that still is a pleasure to do. :) Happy early birthday, in any case!

24th august is my b'day... I dot know how to celebrate it..my family never celebrate it for me and for others my brother and sister.

We still have birthday parties for the older family members. They don't get as many gifts as the kids do but we still have a cake and ice cream. Or sometimes they are taken out to dinner at a place of their choosing.

We always at least have a cake on everybody's birthday no matter how old they are. But as for parties and celebrations it's kind of limited to dinner out now or something small but nice like that. After the 30's most of us only started really celebrating decade birthdays. I had a big party on my 30th birthday. For my 40th my husband and I went to Las Vegas, and I tried really hard to ignore the fact that I had just turned 40. 50 is a long way a away but I would love to go to Italy for my 50th birthday. So while we don't celebrate very much yearly any more we save up for a really big celebration every 10 years.

That sounds like a really neat idea, just celebrating the decades with something big. Vegas must've been really nice. I've always wanted to go there. And Italy sounds like it would make an AWESOME 50th birthday. Definitely makes it something to look forward to, and I think it's a great idea to save up for it instead of celebrating birthdays every year. :)

Yes, I still celebrate birthdays but the way it's celebrated is a bit different now. I don't get a birthday cake - that's fine actually. Gifts? Yes from my wife and parents (it's a cultural thingy). It's not a big do now. We'd just go to a restaurant and have a nice meal with the whole family. Well, no matter how a birthday is celebrated, the important thing is, we remember the date :)

My family does not make a big of a deal of birthday as when I was younger. We do still celebrate mine with my brother since our birthdays are just two days apart. Those that come are usually just the immediate family. When I was younger I invited tons of friends and so did my brother now we just keep it within the family. We usually have a cake and everyone sings. Though one time we went to a mexican restaurant for my birthday and they gave me fried ice cream as a gift that was excellent.

We never had huge celebrations with "tons " of presents but as kids we would have a party with just the family with presents in bed in the morning following a procession of siblings singing "Happy Birthday To You" In the evening we had cake and softdrink to accompany our meal. My children occasionally had birthday parties with school friends and cousins in attendance and 21st birthdays were usually always marked by with a largish party. I like to send family cards for their birthday and I try and make a phone call. I think birthdays are special, even my own. It's my granddaughter Emily's 12th birthday today....

The birthdays in my family vary for the older ones. I used to take my children and their "significant other" to dinner, and then stopped doing it, since 3 of the 4 of them were born around the holidays and we were always so busy........Nov, Dec and Jan! Now I will call them. For my siblings, we call each other, and if there is anything else, it is our own doing, unless our children do something for us. For my 50th, my 4 children gave me a surprise party at the park. It was wonderful! For my 52nd, I gave myself a dinner birthday and gave gifts of picture frames and scratch off lottery tickets to all who were there. This year I am planning a birthday dinner, and even have 2 email friends from OUT OF STATE coming to celebrate with me, one with husband in tow. I only have a couple weeks to wait and I am so excited. I even have a sister getting a cake for me!

The surprise one was great even if I was late!! My ride for part of it, got into an accident!! My 3 daughters also had a type of scavenger hunt for me where I was to go to different places that I was familiar with, and my son's girlfriend was one of the drivers to take me some of the places. She got into an accident and no one was there to get me at the time I was supposed to be picked up. By the time I got the park for my own party, some were ready to leave and they had eaten without me!! LOL But it was still great and I have some good pictures and someone made me a fantastic scrapbook of it, too. Do the surprise party. They are always the best!

Oh, that sounds like this birthday will be a wonderful one! I can imagine you would be super excited to have some out of state buddies coming to visit. I hope everything ends up great and happy early birthday!
A surprise party for your 50th birthday sounds lovely. That's what I want to do for my mother one day, hopefully. :)

Oh wow that sounds like quite the birthday party! Certainly memorable. I hope she was ok even though she got in the accident! And at least you got there. Better late than never, you know. It would've sucked if you had missed your surprise birthday all together!

Of course I do celebrate but the ways had changed. Like when I was child used to have grand party and used to give return gifts to all the members attending the celebration party, but now it has changed, instead of return gifts there are drinks and dinner. But CAKE still remains the important part of celebration. The number of members attending has also decreased and is limited to only close ones, but I guess things will always change as we grow, weather it is Birthday celebrations or throwing parties.

I do not celebrate birthdays but if people celebrate for me, I do not refuse. Often my friends will call for a celebration as we have the habit to celebrate each and every one of our birthdays. Celebration is dining out at a restaurant and a movie or a karaoke session. No birthday parties.

You should try it after you’ve had almost fifty of them! It gets to the stage where you would rather not acknowledge yet another birthday! When we are over forty I suppose we should consider ourselves fortunate to be having birthdays at all (lol)! I celebrated my 48th in June, yes that one I actually acknowledged! I must sound so old to you!

Of course you don't sound old. :) Age is only a number, really. As long as you think you're still young, then you are. It's good that you still celebrate them, though. It's always a blessing to be able to have one more birthday! Some people would give anything for that chance.

Ah, c'mon, celebrating birthdays is great !! no matter what your age, you appreciate everyone making a scene over you !!! I do !
HA! I am 60 and will be 61 and want a cake with candle, the whole shebang LOLA
A nice fun present or two is nice :)
If you don't at least say Happy Birthday, the person has to feel kinda left out?
Give me a break, at least get a cute little card !

LOL I really enjoy celebrating birthdays. No matter whose birthday they are and i just like the atmosphere and the cake!!LOL.... But I think maybe when i become older, I won't enjoy the birthday of myself because it remind me that i'm getting older. I don't like that but i will still enjoy other people's birthday.
