online friends...

Do you have many online friends?? With all the sites like myspace, facebook, public forums.... online chats... there are people out there that we may talk to every day --but they dont live near us and we become friends online by talking either weekly, daily, monthly....etc. I belong to 4 forums (non paying, but through authors of my favorite books) and I have people on there that we have talked for a couple years now...and I would say they are friends since we talk about every day stuff and things that are going on with our families... along with the new books we are reading and what books we are waiting on to come out. One of my friends online is in the middle of moving and wont be able to get online for a few weeks after they get into there new house... until everything gets hooked up.... so I will be sad as I talk to her daily. Of course I have other sites that keep me busy along with my online money sites that I have started this year. Even here at mylot there are many of us who have friends that answer to our discussions and we answer to theirs....and we start to get to know them. So do you have many online friends?

I have quite a lot of online friends, some who started out as online friends that i have gone onto meet in real life and meet up with now and then. A few friends from the US and Canada, we send parcels back and forth for our children at christmas and birthdays yet we've never actually met eachother. I am a moderator on another forum so i get to know quite a lot of people who pass through the site, hence my gigantic friends lists on places like facebook.

That's incredibly sweet that you sent holiday gifts for each other's children! I agree that having international friends is one of the best things about meeting people on the web! My family and I are not big travelers and we never really had the money for it anyway, but thanks to the Internet I now have a friend in Belgium that I would love to get the chance to meet one day. It's so interesting to learn about her and her culture--little things, like how they put mayonnaise on their french fries in Beligium and she thinks it's funny that no one does that here. It's a really valuable form of education when you can learn from real people and have that personal twist on things.

I have lots and lots of online friends. A lot of them I've known for 4 or 5 years, and some longer than that. Some of my friends I've met from here on myLot, wayyyyy back when myLot was just beginning! I belong to other forums too, not paid ones, but health forums and such. There are a lot of honest nice people out there. Sure, there are those who are not who they purport they are, but I think after you talk with somebody for a long time, you can pretty much figure it out lol. I like having my online friends. I no longer am able to drive (health reasons) so it's nice to have friends to talk with on a daily, or other, basis!

oh I agree, for those who cant get out of the house --online friends are the best...and yes you also have to be cautious since you never know who you are talking to at first... but if after some time you do get a feel for what certain people are and what ones to call friends.

I started to actively use the computer and internet for social things about seven years ago. I'm 36 now and it took me several years after my first husband left me for me to touch one...he wasted so much of his time on it, ugh. Anyway, since then, I've a wealthy collection of Swedes, Nords, Canadians, Americans and a handful of others. Some of these people and I are connected by a common interest, others by friends of friends... Some of them I've met in real life...and that's always a joy. *Pleiades

I do have a lot of online friends. This started for me when I was pregnant with my son three years ago. I joined a forum with other mothers that were expecting within the same 10 day period of me. We talked everyday throughout our pregnancies and still talk now about how the children are growing up. We shared in the joy of their births and the pain of one girls miscarriage. I've actually met a couple of them in person. I also have online friends through digital scrapbooking, they probably know me as well as my IRL friends. Besides sharing the craft of scrapbooking, they are a group of people that I feel like I can turn to for anything that I need. So, in retrospect, in the age of the internet I probably have more online friends than I do in real life friends.

i have lots of online friends from facebook...well they are just there because of the games there which requires lots of members...aside from that i don't have any connection/communication from them...they are just on list... but on the whole time that i am on line...i think i just have few friends online that i think are really my friends...one that i meet on 'tagged' and we chat every now and then i he's a good listener i think coz i can freely tell him anything and even give his advices sometimes...but i find more friends here on mylot coz like what you have said, i came to know them more through discussions and sometimes pm's...

I have had a lot of online friends as well. Years ago when I first became vegan, I joined a vegan forum online to talk to others about it because everyone I knew ate meat, and it was hard to be vegan in my teens when I was doing it all alone. They gave me the resources I needed, and I came to respect these people. When I had learned enough to where I could teach others, though, I found the board didn't interest me any longer. I truly cared about the people but I was always bored being on the website, since there was usually nothing new. I found the same problem on a child-free forum years later. Since I was six I knew I didn't want kids, but I had never found a friend that felt the same way. Once I met my husband almost five years ago, I found that friends and family were badgering me about if I imagined kids with him, and I didn't see myself having them at all. So I joined a child-free forum so I could talk with other women who didn't have that maternal instinct. I met many people on there who I care for, and would continue talking to if I could stay interested in the website itself. To make a longer story short, I have a lot of people who have enriched my life that I've never met face-to-face, but it always depends on where I meet them and how that affects the relationship. That's why I love myLot. You have so many topics you can talk about, so I feel like I won't get bored here. Plus, you earn money here! The friends I've already made here are people I already care about, whether or not they know it. :)

I have several on line friends as do most of the responses here. I have one friend I've talked to over the last several years and she lives in England. the very best friend I have too. And, another one from Canada, and another one from just about 200 miles from me and yet several from different states, and also some from my home here in Montana I joined mylot under a new, special friend, amazonlady, some of you might know already but, it's nice to talk to people from other societies and cultures. I've only been a member of mylot for a couple of weeks and loving it ! So, here's to good friends, on line and off line .

I have a few really close online friends that I actually met through online video games! It starts as adding you on your messenger, so you can play in the same server and then it gets to a more friendly basis like how are you, what's up kinda thing. My longest online friend I met in December of 2005 so it's been almost 4 years! Unfortunately I don't talk to him as much as others but we still keep in touch. I didn't think that making friends online or even people that date online was a very good idea because you can lie easily online, and there are predators but my best friend which I met in person moved to another country and we talk online every day and even "hang out" by watching the movie at the same time while messaging each other and our friendship is still going strong even though she has been gone for 4 years (but we see each other in the summers). So I do think online friendships are possible with a lot of trust and communication! Great topic!

I really have a lot of online friends but i am sorry to say that i have never seen them as real frinends, and i don't think that internet friends can take the place of friend we make in our real daily life. It is undeniable that Online romance exsits, but it doesn't happend frequently, instead, there are too much cheats, liars even criminals online and it is often reported about online cheatings and crimes on TV and papers. Everyone should be alert to make online friends and no way can replace face-to-face communication way.
