I have run on various OS like 95,98,2000 me,XP,vista,7.
95,98,XP have been problem free ones.I changed that only when it became too monotonous.(95,98 became too outdated)
2000 was the worst one I encountered. Each thing I did lead to an error on that thing.
Vista is OK but I feel it was not too smoothed out for easy usage.
7 is gonna be the one to watch out for.
But to sum it up I still love XP.(Now I use Great themes to get rid of the bad looks and all)
XP is just so speedy uses very little ram.Is great for those who have low ram.
What about u guys?
What about linux,mac,etc?
I have never used these so please post ur opinion of the best OS out there.

The best operating system in my opinion is definitely windows xp....i have tried many other os but its either very slow ....or isn't compatible to any good software....xp is fast and simple.....when they launched vista i started using it for its great looks but soon found that it was slow and doesn't gives good framerates for my games....so i switched back to xp ....to solve the looks problem i now use rocket dock and the bricko packs.

What u told about vista has been the prob for me as well.I could not play GTA 4 in vista whatever I tried as it was simply too slow and the roads were not beening processed at all. When I changed to XP the game worked like a charm and I could easily play it.

hehe,GTA requires too high-performance computer, but tv game xbox360 is common and cheap to play GTA4.
only vista or higher OS has directX 10,xp or less can't run directX 10 game,so you have to use vista to run DX 10 game, unfortunately vista is rather slow and dull, many people dislike playing game in vista, if you want to play game specially, you should buy xbox360 or ps3 to be special game player, tv game is much better and faster than pc game, hardware in computer is updated so fast, this year you have bought the strongest computer, but run new game hard next year, tv game needn't to be changed much in ten years.

I too have used many OS's throughout my life and it goes way back to using Tandy's and Commodores. Right into DOS and eventually all the Window's OS's. I haven't tried 7 yet and I have still yet to give Apple's OS's a try. I have used Linux in some courses.
XP is still a good OS to work with. The first time I tried it was when it first came out and a friend gave me a copy. I put it on my IBM Aptiva 333 that had the K6 AMD chip, worked like a charm. I still use XP on my two main computers while my wife and daughter use Vista. I stay away from Vista but have to deal with it when I do repairs and such for people and they have it. Obviously, upgrading from XP to Vista is not easy with older computers, that's why MS has those applications to test your computer to see if it can be upgraded. Often you need new hardware such as graphic cards and more RAM.
If I could afford it, I would switch to a MAC and leave behind so many headaches that Window's OS's has with viruses, worms, trojans, spyware and so forth. It just gets tiring sometimes having to spend a portion of your time on maintenance.

U are right.A lot of people would prefer MAC if it wasn't too darn expensive!

Linux is still the best operating system for me. I use it to do all the things that I use to do with Windows OS. With Linux I don't have to worry about viruses and spyware. No only it available for free and I can also update for security patches for free. But for gaming platform I must say Windows XP is still the best but I guess it will be replace by Windows 7 soon.

when i design ,develop asp.Net or IDE and play game, using windows XP,
when i manage server and develop C++ or perl, using linux or windows server 2003.
i think linux doesn't have a large number of users, but all linux are released free, and companies use linux to found free server.

I know linux is very good. But as a gamer I just can't change to linux.
Wish games could be compatible with linux soon.

yes, but ubuntu linux is so pretty and humanizing, you can begin to study ubuntu easily, ubuntu as linux desktop is not very for developers and server host, user can play video music game and configure appearence in linux desktop, now there are some first 3D games come out in linux desktop, look like Quake 1 or Counter-strike in 2000's year, but game in linux is good enough to play now.

For myself, it has been the availability of software which has been the driving force in upgrading to a more recent Windows Operating System.
At this current time, there is still alot of XP software on the market as well as the Internet, so I don't feel the need to go to Vista yet. XP is great but it loads a ton of background programs which are largely unneeded, had there been more software for ME, I would have been running that system.
My sister runs Vista on her laptop, and she complains about the issues with security it has for legitimate software. So it is unlikely I will ever get that OS.

My favorite are Windows 98 and Xp till to this date. I did not like Vista much because one need to upgrade lot of hardware before installing it. I did not like Windows 95 because in those days ever driver has to be loaded for that OS. I did not much like Windows 2000 or Me. Windows Media center too was useless OS. I had opportunity to load Windows 7 in my sister new laptop and this Os is awesome and I feel better than Vista. But lot of menus are incomplete, I hope Microsoft comes up with better screens while it launches in coming days. Media player look too is not good.. But working is very fast compared to Vista..
Once I had opportunity even to try Sussee Linux and it was dam good. What I like in Linux is we need not have to load the dam antivirus kit.. I never had the chance to try Mac.. will somehow will have a look at this OS one day..

Hey,
To tell you the truth, I would have to say that Windows XP was quite a successful operating system for the whole world. It was a great improvement on the older ones, hopefully Windows 7 will take its place. Make sure you have a good day, Happy Lotting!!
