Once in a while, I do received prank calls on my landline.
They usually came in after midnight when we are having
wonderful dreams... when my wife picked it up, thought
it was an emergency call since it was at odd hours!
She can hear heavy breathings on the other side of the line..
She will keep repeating 'hello, hello, anyone there?'
She will put it down, few minutes later, it calls again!
The same thing happened..a few more times & my wife decided
to hang up the phone.(by putting aside as if engaged)
The next morning, my sister will put the phone back to normal
as she went off to work. The phone rang again.. the same thing!
It happenned a few nights, until we just hang up the phone...
did not happened anymore!
Do share your experience here, perhaps we can have some idea on how
to handle this type of nuisance..tks for sharing!

My friends have sometimes called just to say something ridicoulous. Like hey, your elephant is in town or something and then they hang up and I laugh. Of course I know it is them. I have also tried to receice people calling wrong - an old lady crying and asking for her kids. Then I changed my number. For gods sake I did not know that woman!

Dear surfacesur,
Sometimes my son's schoolfriends also like to prank
him. His classmate's younger sister will called him
and said " J... why you bullied my sister, she is
crying now", then my son can hear his classmate giggle
at the background...I asked him what happened? Then he
told me "My classmate, school holiday too boring, don't
know what to do, too much credit on the handphone, so
do prank calls to all the friends". Seems like they all
enjoyed it very much...hmmm
Do share your opinions on 'Lost & Found' a topic I had just
started...thanks! All the best & happy myLotting!

If your friends called and played a joke on you, it is not classified under prank call. The reasons:- 1.You recognize their voices. 2. It is not persistent and harassing. Yours may be just your friends playing a joke on you. An old lady called and started crying and asking for her kids. Sounds eerie.Could she from 'the other side'?

it depends on my mood. If I receive a prank during my moody days I'd probably cuss at the person on the other line but if I feel like tripping as well, I'd play along. It's annoying to receive pranks when your doing something really serious though. Or when your waiting for an important phone call.

Dear impaktita,
Yes, it depends on my mood and the situation too!
If the prank was on a day time, & I was bored, I will
just entertained him/her by put aside..let it be and his/her
phone bills will runs... or I just said..."hello, nothing else
to do?..then I left the phone on the sides till he give up!"
He called again. my husband & I will picked it up and just listen
and we smile to hear what he got to say...normally he just quite
and trying to listen to our sides...that's crazy...he should spend
his time at myLot and earn some good money!...
Would you like to share your views on "Lost & Found" at my profile,
a new discussion topic started by me...hope to hear from you, tks!

Here in the UK these sort of nuisance calls are illegal now, and they can easily be traced. I used to get a lot of nuisance calls, some of them in the middle of the night. I got an answer-machine after a while and unplugged the phone at night - that way I could still get any important calls that I would play back in the morning and the prank calls would find no joy in calling me. It wasn't ideal, but better than being awoken. It never happens to me nowadays and emergency calls can be answered at night. The sort of people who used to enjoy making the prank calls, know that they can be traced and do not want to take the risk. I think we have quite a good system in place here. We can also get the phone provider to scan all our calls before allowing them through. - Derek

Dear derek_a,
I like your suggestions very much on dealing with all these
prank calls! Getting the answer-machine was very practical!
It really helps and we can enjoy our comfortable sleep at
night!
Great to hear that UK has this system to track down prankster!
Thanks for sharing, really appreciate it very much.
Happy myLotting & Cheers!

chrish, most prank calls are usually silence, when you say 'hello' or they breathe heavily into the mouthpiece of the phone or utter some obscene words or you have won prizes or the likes. Sometimes, they are rude abusive and violent. They keep on calling. They should channel their persistence and perseverance into something positive. What a waste of talent!

Dear a_mothertouch,
To handle pranks call is real tough. The more you threaten them the more they'll call. When they know that you are angry, they will be laughing away on the other line. They have won. They will call again and again and again.Don't provoke them. Just ignore them, and hang up your phone.OR Install caller ID.

Don't hang up the phone in advance. Next time, when it happens, you pick the phone up when it rings and hang it there, you can ignore it and keep sleeping, let it breathe along, as long time as he likes. You need say nothing and ignore that. If he thinks its interesting and have a lot of money to pay the telephone bill, let him paly along every night!

Hello Butterfly007,
If u pick up the phone when it rings and hang it there without listening who the caller is, u may miss important calls. One option is pick up the handset and put it onto your ear without saying 'hello'. Wait for the the other party to address first. If no sound, wait and wait. He has more money to throw, anyway.

That's sounds scary! i feel afraid reading your discussion.. but I've ever receive crazy call from someone I don't know..the number is "private number" and he chuckle, laugh and mumbling on the phone.. First I turn off my cellphone immediately then that thing happen again until 5 times. It's late at night, 2 p.m and I was really sleepy. So I shout at him with impolite tone and said I can check his number and find out who's him because I have the machine for it installed on my cellphone and my father is a police and once I know him, he can be sent to the jail for terrorism me .. then he go away, never call back.. I found this method work on me^^,,

I haven't received any prank calls in a long long time... I guess it is due to the wonderful invention of caller ID! But, wayyy back when I did receive them I used to just hang up, end of story. :)
Hope you have a great day!

To hang up is a good deterrent. But you may cut off your own calls which may be important or emergency. Anyway, the caller ID is definitely a good invention.

Hmmm... let me think... I don't think I ever received a prank call, when I make calls sometimes, when the receiver like my sister, she might pretend somebody else in the house to make fun on me but I don't think I count that as a prank call.
And I can recognize who's voice is whose so if somebody that I know want to try this on me, I can know easily. ;-)

Thank God you have no prank call at all. If ur sister or friend calls and pretending to be someone else then I think we can't classify that as prank call. Prank calls may be defined as 'Calls from unknown person or persons who persistently harassing you by phoning you.'

This happened some for to five years back. We had conducted a seminar for some MLM product. There was good response and we were also very happy. The next day morning some rival group i think called and aksed by my name and started asking unnecessary questions regarding the seminar and said it was illegal and have to report by noon at the police station.
Initially we thought some of our friend was joking but started receiving more and more calls. My brother in law took a half a day permission from the office and we all reached the said police station. We were all tense as we had never stepped a police station before.
When we said our story the officer in charged laughed and said it could be a hoax call just to scare you. We really heaved a sigh of relief. But till date we do not know who has played the trick on us.

That prankster must be from a competitor company. He obviously attended your presentation and found that the compensation scheme is better than that of his. So try to get in touch with him and sponsor him.

For me I would say that it depends on the type of prank they are pulling out. When I was yung and my brothers would answer the phone and they would hear the some heavy breathing on the other lines they will say "thabk you for calling police department" and the line gets disconnected from the emd of the caller. But my mom used to get pissed specially when she is doing something so she had a caller ID installed and everytime we get that type of call then we anouncr the number of the caller over the phone and they get scared and hang up

Hi checkmail, I receive similar call on my mobile informing that I have won a prize-mosquito netting. The caller ID is on my cell phone and I told I would return their call later as I am driving. A week had elapsed, they called again. This time around I asked for their address. They gave me the address.A month had passed and they called again. This is the third time they called and I was bland and direct, but without being rude, ask how I managed to win a prize.I entered a contest months back and I was the only winner.Appointment mixed to collect my prize. No, it is not prank call. But yes, I have won a prize.

Someone must have 'cared' for you guys so much to pay that much time to pranked you! Jerks these people. I do the same too. Just hang up and keep it engaged. If it happens again and again for a very long period, I'll apply for a caller ID if it is affecting my fixed line. If it happens to my mobile, I'll just mute it and ignore it as I can see the number appearing...

Ahah, if on my mobile, and I can know who the caller is, then it will be, 'An eye for an eye. A tooth for a tooth.' But I think the prankster will hide his number making it 'private'. As for land line, it is a good idea to get a caller ID system.

the thing with prank callers is that the more you allow yourself to be affected by them, the more they like it. I'm sure we all had our shares of prank callers. I ahd my share too. So waht i did, i just ignore them. If they are persistent, I juts hang up the phone. Soon, they get tired and they just stop. These are people who have nothing better to do with their lives. I don't give them the satisfaction of ruining my day or my night whatever the case may be.

These pranksters not only ruined our days, but also stole our good nights sleep. They are terrorists of the mind. They get the thrills of hearing you on the phone getting work-up. They deprive you of your previous sss...sleepzzzzzz. Ignore them is one of the methods, but you may miss imp.calls if you hang up ur phone.

Yes, play their own game and hit back at them. Subscribe a caller ID system and get their number. Then call them back and harass in the wee wee hours. Repeat the procedure for a few days to let them have a taste of their own 'poison.' Better still install an auto-dialing system, if there is such a system.

lol That happened to me before. I don't know if it's a prank call or not but occasionally I would get calls from someone that doesn't say anything when I say "hello" or you can just hear them breathing which is really weird. I don't know if it's some kind of pervert, but when I get these calls, I just hang up. If you have caller ID, you can try to block them.

Yes, It is a good idea to subscribe a caller ID. When it is the same number, just switch on the answering m/c. Then when that pervert knows that he is speaking to a m/c he'll give up.

Oh yes, these pranksters are very free and I think they enjoyed
it very much!
Few years ago, at 2.15 am, we received a call...someone on the
other side speak in Mandarin (Chinese language) to us and in
a 'suspense' voice. 'Pls inform grandma not to go to the wet
market tomorrow. Grandpa passed away, pls go back hometown
tomorrow first thing in the morning!'. I can hear the back
ground..there was someone else there..gigling but very soft &
sounded far away! Due to the phone ringging that broke the
silence of the early hours, it woke my mum and my sister up
too! So, I just explained to them what the guy on the other
end just said. A chilling sense go down thru our spine, and
hairs stand on ends!
We just keep calm and I do suspect it could be a prank call..
since this people did not identify who he was! So, the next
morning, we make a call back hometown to asked the normal
questions...how's is everyone back home...everyone's is FINE!
What a PRANK call...but we are truly grateful, the call is just
a PRANK call...
Thanks and all the best! Do keep in touch!

Hi,
This guys are nuts, how can they make this type of pranks!
They should be caught and actions should be taken against them!
I think it is wise that you fixed an answering machine to avoid
this type of nuisance!

i often get prank calls from my cellphone. If they answer me, i'll just have to tell them that i'm busy and have no time for nonsense stuff. if they don;t say anything on the other line, i'll hung up and if they continue on calling even if i hung up on them, I'll just have to put the mouthpiece near a radio or television and turn it on the highest volume. if still they continue to do it, i'll just have to put my phone on a silent mode or i put it at bedside without hanging up until they do.
