I have been considering taking an online class or two and was wondering how many here have. If not..have you ever considered it? I think it would be great to be able to further your education with the time you have extra to do it but I wonder if it is easier or harder. There isn't anyone that can guide you if you get stuck on something..or is there?

Hi Jen,
There is no problem in learning I suppose. I am to planning to learn Spanish Language online but have not had a good contact as yet. Learning has no end and learn it any way makes no difference. all the best.

I agree! I love to learn. I would love to learn as many languages as you know. How many was it again? I learned Spanish from talking to the people. They taught me Spanish and I helped them with their English. It was fun to learn. Thanks for responding!

I am going to be taking online classes when we get the money. As far as I know you have your teacher's email address so if you get stuck you can ask. Also, I think a friend of ours goes to a chatroom with her classmates, and that's how they do their assignments.

I guess that's something you might want to ask about, how the students and teachers can interact with each other. It might be different with different schools. The prices might be different as well. The school might even offer tutors who have gone through the program, etc,... who knows!

They have some great schools online. Each one is different ofcourse. I have taken several on different writing sites I have been a member of down through the years. They sure helped me. Usually you can ask your instructor and there would be one for each class. Let them know from the beginning that you are a first timer and my instructor was very nice. I think it depends on what school. My experience was only with the writing ones.

Hi celticeagle! I look forward to trying out a class online. I think it's wise to let that instructor know I'm a newbie at online classes. Now I just have to figure out what I'm going to take..lol...The writing classes sound fun and informative. If I take something that "pertains" to my job, my company will help foot the bill. Maybe they have a list on online universities that they will cover. Thanks for responding.

Jen-
I've done several online classes in the past, and they were fantastic. I could work around "my" schedule so long as I met the deadlines for assignments, which meant I had much more free time then having to sit in a classroom and listen to a lecture. I think some are easier then the class in the classroom, such as my United States government class, but some are harder and leave you wondering about things, such as my statistics class in research. Good luck to you!

Hi Anora! It would be a lot better to actually get to sit down and handle my assignments on my own time. I think it is a nice option. Did you get good feedback when you emailed your questions? That's one of my biggest concerns. Thanks for responding.

That is what I liked about my online classes. I always received quick turn around, and questions were handled on a individual basis. I don't think I ever had to wait longer then 48 hours for a response if I had a question. Generally classes for online are set up so that they are materials that can be covered in such a medium.

No, I have not yet... I planned to take an online course last year but did not proceed. Now, I am taking my master's degree (I chose to take it on a conventional way). I believe that having personal interaction with the profs and classmates have added-value and benefits.

That's right... We learn more by interacting with other people... It boosts somehow our EQ, haha... Thanks also!

Hi! After going to a local college for two years and deciding that's not what I wanted to do, I went to college online for about a half a year with my husband and then fiancee.
We both went to the University of Phoenix. Both of us have had vastly different experiences. The classes are ridiculously easy, but that's not the main problem: the instructors don't have to have anything other than an associate's degree, and out of the four instructors I had there, only one answered questions and got back to me when I needed clarification on an assignment. Instructors have up to 24 hours to get back to you on a question. I finally had it after waiting 8 days for a response (by this time, the assignment I had a question on was already turned in), so I went to my counselor (the one who had said when signing up, "If an instructor doesn't get back to you within 24 hours, just call me and we'll get your question answered"), who at that point said, "All I can do is submit a ticket into Academic Affairs." How in the world is that going to get my question answered?
I finally dropped the online courses because it was a nagging experience to have to try to encourage the college employees to do their jobs. They then did not send my refund back in time, so I reported them online to a few different consumer websites (such as ripoffreport.com), and also to the Attorney General of Arizona.
We were eventually contacted by the magazine U.S. News & World Report because of the problems I listed on a consumer website, where my now husband and I were featured. My husband is staying with the school...at this point he even admits many of the instructors just truly don't know what they're doing, and that it's so hard to get clarification from them. I once was in class with a deaf woman--the poor woman had no help, and I would try to explain things to her the best I could, but it was so hard to understand what she typed, and she eventually dropped. I wondered how she had ever gotten into the "university."
I highly recommend searching through all other options first. Also, call some potential employers (people you might work for if you get a degree online), and ask them if they'd consider an applicant with an online degree. I had a few that said they would be leery, and that was another major warning light. Please check all of your options out first--you don't want to be thousands in debt and have a degree that employers won't accept.

Thank so much for sharing your experience. Sounds like you have a real horror story when it comes to online classes. I will take your advice and talk to the Vice president of the company that I work for and ask him what he thinks about online degrees versus in class. He does the hiring at the company so he should know. I do interviews sometimes but I have never been faced with anyone presenting an online degree. Take care and thanks again.

I really did! I know there are people out there who have had better experiences than I have and/or have gotten a job with an online degree, but you really do want to do your homework before ending up owing money that you have nothing to show for. I loved the way the college was set up online--but when you can't get clarification and the instructors don't do what they're supposed to, your grade is hurt because of things beyond your control. Good luck in whatever direction you go. :)

Hi Jen!
It appears a good idea to go for on line classes to enhance our learning abilities to further our education. I've not tried it so far. Howevever, I feel that it would be quite interesting to learn this way, provided, I could spare some time for it. If you get the requisite feed back from the users/members, Please do let me know. All the best to you!

Hi deepak! I am anxious to hear what everyone thinks about online classes. I have taken "live" classes before but I think it would be a lot easier to be able to do my work from home..provided there is sufficient help if I were to get stuck on something. My company will pay a portion of my fee provided I keep a certain grade point average and it pertains to work. Thanks for the response..I'll keep you updated.

I'm taking an online course for CNA. If I have any problems or questions I can email or call the instructor during certain hours. I like it because it allows me to do the course work in my own time frame (at least for this course).

It's only a 75 hour course and can be done in a month. I don't have to do any floor hours before being certified but I have to pass a clinical test as well as the written before being certified.

I considered doing it for a class, however when I went to register, it was 200 dollars more than the classroom version! It's also hard to stay focused when doing it online and I figured I'd get a lot of interruptions, so I decided against taking it online. I thought about the same thing you did, what happens when you have a question? I suppose you could e-mail it and someone would respond, but I just thought it was way too expensive.

I know it is a bit more expensive than classroom classes but it would still be better for me. Once I figured in the gas money, supplies, and childcare costs, it would pretty much be about even for me. I do worry about the communication aspect of it though. Thanks for responding.

There was one time where I took some online classes to learn Paint Shop Pro and if I got stuck my instructor lived in New Zealand, which was great because I'm a night owl and when I was up she was up. I had a lot of support from her. She was great.

Hi kellyjeanne! Sorry it's taken so long to respond. I didn't get a notification on your comment. I could see how that would have worked out great. If I had a supportive instructor I would feel alot better about an online class. Thanks for responding.

Hi, I have considered taking a course online but it costs too much so now I have applied for a course at my local university since I wanted to do a degree. I think you still get a lot of support from your tutors and on some sites there is also a forum where students interact. I believe the lessons plans are easy to follow and interactive so you don't feel isolated. Before deciding I guess you need to check the site properly and make sure that they have a good customer care when you send some query otherwise in the long run you will not find much help. Also it is important that you check that accreditation of the institute of agency as I had search for courses with so called universities especially in America then I checked if these are recognized and in fact they weren't. So be sure on that first thing to see that you will invest your money properly. Good luck!!

Thank you very much for the advice. It's true that some classes are not even recognized depending on the "institution" That's providing the course. My company will actually pay a certain amount of my tuition so they may actually have a list of institutions that they recognize as being legit. I do worry that there is not enough interaction but like you say, I have heard there are online study groups with some of the courses.

Hello friends,
Sorry for disagreement but I like to stick to the traditional ways of teaching. I don't think for an average student, studying online will have quite the same effect as classroom teaching. Of course, if you are really determined enough, you can learn a lot online as well.
the same is the case with e books. I have so many of them but never feel like reading them.the old novels are still my preference.
but yeah, if the classes don't cost you much and you are free then why not give it a shot? At least you can try to learn something in your free time which is always good.
All the best!

I have been thinking about taking online classes so I could learn at my convienence, but I really don't have the money to do this right now. I have heard that there are some free online classes and I think I am going to make a point to finding these classes and taking one of them!

I wanted to enroll in online nursing course. I was so serious about it. But when I was emailed by the school with how much it would cost me,I decided not to continue because I might not be able to sustain the expenses.

It can be very expensive. I am looking into some financial aid for my classes. My company will also pay some on it. You can also apply online for financial aid. I don't think that anyone in this day and time can easily afford any classes. Thanks for the response.

That's always nice when the company pays for the education. My company is the same way. I have taken a few classes for my profession but they also help pay for classes of choice..provided they can help me out in the future at my job. Thanks for the response.

Nope but lately I've been thinking about furthering my education, but I'm deciding on weather I want to attend school or take a class online and I still haven't made up my mined yet, but there are pros and cons to both methods of learning, but its nice to have more then one choice.

That would be a great teason to do the online thing. I work a fulltime job and have two girls. I'm hoping that an online class will make it easier for me to take a course. Not easy class wise but easier to find time for. Thanks for the response and good luck with your classes.

I have taken 3 online courses through my local university. The experience really depends on how the instructor structures the class. Some may overcompensate for the lack of classroom time and require more paperwork. Others may go to the other extreme and post all class notes in the beginning of the semester and require only a midterm and a final exam. Regardless most online courses offer discussion forums for students to ask questions and help one another out. The instructor often requires this as part of the course so he or she will also read the discussions and clear up any misunderstandings. Most professors will give their students the opportunity to discuss any concerns on an one on one basis.
