How 1 topic Ruined my reputation.

I was in shock and couldn't believe it. I had just woken up today to check my daily earnings and topics in mylot, and when I checked my ratings and my topics, I came to a very shocking truth, that I can be rated so bad for only 1 topic I made. I feel that I might as well made a controversial topic in the section of 'Life', but I didn't think people would be so mad at me they will give me a thumbs down and berate me so much, that I dropped over 10 points in reputation.
I think in my 1 week journey, this is the first time I have ever been shocked upon the rating system, but now I have figured out that you can only talk about things that will not get the general population into an agreement, like my topic about '2012', when I was stating my opinion and asking people's theirs, and that you have should not writing about your opinion unless the majority of people understand your point.
I really think this was my first controversial discussion, but I thought it would go as a normal discussion, not a berating game that sees my rating go skyrocketing down, and now, I don't know if I will ever be able to write my opinions again, without people trying to kick me down and ruin my rating even more.
That is all.

Join the club!
It is NOT a star that decides who and what a user is! That is only a package and sadly can be manipulated by others
Stick to your beliefs and continue being YOU and you will find that others will appreciate that rather than you being a fake.
We are ALL *STARS* here on myLot whatever the colour!

The choice is of course yours but why let others decide that there is no place for you here? Why let others win if you want to be a Lotter?
You stay, you stick it out and even though it could seem to be downhill at the moment, the tide will turn because those playing games will get fed up You are not the only one here to go through a situation like yours. I know for certain that those who just turn a blind eye and continue are the winners - not those who decide to give up.

No, I don't mean I am going to quit, no way, as this site has taught me so much about the real world and what is politically correct to say. I guess if I said that in my the real world or wherever, I guess people would think I'm crazy.
I guess this is how it was for people back then too, like when Galileo, I think, said the world was round, and everyone disbelieved him. He was indeed right, and have changed everyone's mind now we look at it. i guess i won't go into touchy subjects anymore, and try to build up my reputation the positive way, discussing topics people want to know and be delighted about.

I am sorry to hear about your ratings dropping. It is sad when that happens but users will rate others negative, which in all essence hurts them as well. It is a given that others are going to rate you negative when it comes to controversial topics. Your best bet, is to avoid the controversial topics, like politics and religion. Those two will really cause your ratings to plummet. I never go into either one of those areas, as I don't want mine dropping to the bottom. All, you can do is just keep posting quality, and stay out of controversial topics, then you will be doing okay. You can build your reputation back up again. Good luck to you and happy mylotting.

Thanks for the comments my friend. This is the first time i was rated very badly and very obviously getting a bad rep, but I just couldn't imagine that my topic on 2012 would be so horrible that I would go down 10 ratings for this one topic. I don't think it was about race, religion, but might be going into the the politic side, and I think I will never write any more about politics, and will not start writing about religion.
I try try to write quality posts and hope that my bad luck will start to fade. Thanks a lot.

There are some who will give you a bad rating here on Mylot just because they can.
They are the ones who really don't want to hear any other opinions about the subject they have started a discussions about or from the responses we post about them. They are missing out on learning why people have different opinions. They should be grateful to get a response. I will not share my opinion with anyone I disagree with anymore and if they keep up with the bad ratings for those who do respond and have a different opinion, pretty soon no one will even bother to leave a comment. Everyone here should keep an open mind about every subject that arises in a discussion, is that too much to ask of them? Just overlook these people and keep posting.

OK! get over your shock, anger, and hurt feelings! Believe me when I tell you that the Star Rating means Absolutely Nothing! All myLoters come to that belief sooner or later. Some fight against it for months and even years, before they give in and forget about the silly Star Rating System.
So, Be Smart! For your own Sake, Get over it quickly, and get back to having fun on myLot!

I've been here for over 3 years, and believe you me, it makes absolutely no difference to your earnings, or your reputation. I actually take pride in the fact that I am an honest person, who cannot be influenced by those who disagree with my beliefs. In my opinion there are too many on this site who are content to "pu$$y-foot" around any and all controversial topics just because they worry about losing a Star rating which in reality means absolutely nothing except to their inflated Pride! (notice my number 7 star, and I'm a 3 year veteran of myLot) You can be Proud of your low number because you are Honest enough to state your true opinion in every instance. The trolls know that and they have given up trying to embarrass or upset me! Ha ha hahahahahahhhhhhaahahahahahha!

You sure it means nothing? Does it affect earnings at all or is it just a little feature mylot put in to reward our contributions in the interests we like. Sorry, i am new and don't really know much about the star rating, but all I've heard is a better star rating makes you earn more?

I'm sorry about this stupid comment but I have been a member here for a while and have no idea how ratings work. Where do I find out my rating? Does the rating have an effect on our earnings?
Thanks & I hope your rating improves!

It is awful the way that people treat others sometimes. Just terrible. Discussions are just that a way to state your opinion and also to see how other think as well. Yes, there are lots of controversial subjects and in my opinion those things lead to good discussions. Just because you have a different opinion than the next person, they shouldn't think badly of you. We are all entitled to our own opinion.
Keep doing what you are doing and have fun doing it, that's all that I can say.

Well, with your topic title of "2012, Are You Ready To Die!" and your theory of New World Order in the form of American world domination, it's no wonder your rating has taken a fall. If you want to be controversial, try laying out the hard facts from reputable sources rather than putting your rating on the line with personal theories. Shouldn't take long for you to climb back up...

Well, this was not my theory but the theories of reputable people who know too much about the American system, but again, I could be wrong, but I guess I learned my lesson on writing a topic like this, and let's see how the future unfolds.

Hi bluesinjid, sorry to hear you've dropped points on your reputationI know what's it's like as I dropped 8 points from a 98 a couple of weeks ago and it's not a nice feeling knowing you've been deliberately negged. I've just been into your discussion though and it didn't get heated at all and the point of your topic was hardly addressed. I'd advise you to steer clear of religion as I've seen some on there actually threatening to rate negatively, completely against the guidelines, to someone who didn't agree with the mass view. I wouldn't rate someone negatively for a difference of opinion but when people get nasty about it it really does put you off getting into anything controversial. Good luck with your star going back up

Thank you for this great comment. I know this isn't the end of my life, but i am just surprised at how you can't really talk about subjects like politics, religion , and now about theories before you will get your ratings plummeted in one topic. I guess that people just don't like the fact we ( as in me) talk about these topics, as they want to ignore everything about it or they just hate you for talking about it in the first place.
I guess I will have to rebound with some more positive discussion, that will interest people and while making an interesting conversation.

Thats really sad. People should be allowed to talk about controversial subjects without their ratings going down. I mean the most fun is when things get controversial. This is when people really learn and get confronted with new ideas and concepts.
I think the rating system should be changed. I think alot of people don't understand it's proper use and thinks it's just there for stating likes and dislikes. I also think people use it biasedly and alot of 'friends' just give best responses even though they are not deserving.
I think every time someone rates..... a box should come up asking them why, and these should be scanned before being accepted.
Not being able to talk about controversial subjects on mylot is sad, because it means less room for growth and development and people say what should be said, rather than actually being themselves and saying exactly what they feel....this is the downside of mylot setup.
I love the topic of 2012, New World Order etc....which I'm sure you were referring to.....it makes me feel sad that we can't openly discuss such things, because of a narrow-minded audience.
If mylot wants to improve then the rating system is definitely something they need to improve. Once again so sorry.

I have been in that situation, I used to have a 9 star but when I saw my discussion it went back to 8 star and I couldn't find any reason that anybody would dare to rate me negatively, I think all my topics were great..haha, I think, they are just insecure..lol, anyways, its really not the stars that counts, our co-mylotters can rate us negatively till our star drops to 1 star, but for me, they will have their time for that..maybe a bad karma on their personal lives will do..haha, just don't feel bad about it, you know and God knows that you just did your job, and if they don't liked it, then, its not your problem anymore, its theirs..hehe
cheers to all mylotters who have been rated negatively by other mylotters..!^_^

Well, I am so sorry that you got nailed by the grumpy people of Mylot. I hate when I hear of stories as such...and no! Continue to write the controversial material because I think those are the ones that we can all learn from! Mylot is meant to be opinionated, going much further than "My favorite color is pink because....." Come on-we are adults! The ones who poorly rated you shouldn't be here. Ratings should be dropped because of spam or abuse, not for one speaking his or her mind.

Oh dear, sorry to hear this happens to you. I wonder why people want to rate so negatively!
It seems to defeat the purpose of a discussion forum when people do not want to engage in controversy subject.
It's hard to reach the 10th star, I hope more people will rate you positively and pull your ratings up.

Hi blues,
It's sad that some members can never take the views of others in an objective manner, and they resort to giving a negative mark when they think someone is going against their convictions. In a community as great as myLot, differences of opinions will always be present, and it is of my belief that we should allow a free flowing exchange of thoughts to make myLot an even richer, greater, and a more significant forum site. I hope this won't stop you from sharing your insights and valuable information. And cheer up, you will get your star rating back in no time. Peace!

I know that it stinks that people have rated you so badly when there was no cause or reason for it. Just because someone disagrees with a discussion I don't think it is right for them to rate you poorly for it. There have been posts that made me feel downright angry but I do not rate them poor for it. Unfortunately with the anonymous rating system you will have people who will take advantage and try to screw people over. The best you can do is to ignore it and continue to post. Post about what you believe in and don't hold back because some idiot can't handle somebody else's opinion.
Keep you chin up!
