I can't write using my left hand. I always wonder how people write very fast and have good handwriting using left hand. There are very few people in my city who can write using left hand. Most of the people force their kids to write using right hand because they believe that it is the hand for writing. What about you?
Are you a left handed person?
Can you write using left hand?

I am left handed, but i am envious of those who are right handed LoL. Primarily because most things in the world are set up to be more convenient to those who are right handed, as that is the prevailent dominant hand of most people in the world.
It is not suprising to hear that children in your area are "forced" into using their right hands. This has been a long standing tradition in many many cultures, as the left side of body is considered to be the side of the body evil spirits favor.
In fact, in latin, the word for left is Sinistra..which formed into the word sinister that we use today meaning ominous, evil, or bad.
Luckily the tradion of focing children to use their right hands instead is slowly becoming a thing of the past (depending on what part of the world you live in) which is a good thing, as the hand you write with has to do with how your brain is "wired" and not with evil spirits. Children who are forced to write with the hand they are not comfortable with tend to develop learning difficulties in life.

It is a very good response to the discussion. Yes, you are right children should not be forced to write with right hand and I am seeing that it is getting reduced in this new age. We should not do something which will result in learning difficulties for our children. I like to watch people writing with left hand.

i know you said you enjoy watching people write with their left hands, but Unfortunately left haned writing is a pain sometimes for those who have to do it. From my experience i have one of two options. I can hold the pen/pencil in a way that is comfortable for my hand, but this cause the side of my hand to drag over the paper, smeaking the ink that i just put on the paper and also causing the side of my hand to become stained with ink or pencil residue....OR i can hold the pen in a curled up way in my hand tht is highly uncomfortable, but at least i don't smudge my handwriting.

Try writing backwards. Start at the right side of the page and write the words in reverse order, then you don't smudge. I think it would be hard to judge though, and difficult to spell each word backwards, but your hand could be comfortable and smudge free.
If you want to learn to write with your opposite hand, you are in for a very difficult time. It is possible to train yourself to use your less dominate hand though, and if you do it at a time when YOU decide to do, rather then it being forced upon you, then you will for go the learning difficulties. You simple, write with your other hand, every time you write anything. No matter how messy or awkward it is, until it is no longer awkward.
I'm told it takes about a month doing it everyday, personally I have never had the inclination to learn to write in a south paw fashion. Saw the hand curled up thing to many times.

Hi daliaj,
I am left-handed but I have a terrible handwriting. At work I have three friends who are left handed, that makes us 4 in the office. My son started out as left-handed but we taught him to be right-handed because I don't want him to suffer the inconveniences that I experienced. I remember in classrooms in school we used armchairs, and the arm was always placed on the right side. So it was very difficult to write especially during exams. And there are some other things that are not just made for left-handed people.

Exactly, thanks for describing our (left-handed people) struggle with scissors, very well said!
And I don't know these days if they make guitars for left-handed people, but during my teenage years when playing guitar was one of my passion, I had to learn the right way as there was no "left way". All the guitars back then were made for right-handed people.

Like scissors! Well, they DO make left handed scissors, but how often do you have a pair on hand when you need to cut something, unless you carry them with you every where you go. Using a pair of scissors is the ONE thing i can do with my right hand, only because i have had to adapt since those are the only kind readily availiable to me.
To all you "normal" right handed people out there, try it...take a pair of scissors ino your left hand and try to cut something...not only does the handle usually not fit well in your hand that way, but because of the positioning of the blades (one being on the outside of the other) many times when you try to cut with your left hand, instead of slicing through the paper as it should, it just bends the paper and gets it stuck between the blades.

My mom was left handed. She could write with her right hand as she was forced to learn that in school but did everything else with her left hand. She could also wright with both hands in mirror image- forward with one and backwards with the other. It was fun to watch. One of my brothers, my daughter, and a sister-in-law are left handed. I had to have my sister-in-law help my daughter with writing. She was a confirmed lefty even as an infant she would use her left hand to hold things. There must be something genetic as all of us righties have very similar writing and rather sloppy too. My lefty brother had the only decent handwriting in the family and it didn't look anything like the rest. I used to be jealous. Now he is in his 50's and recently developed some kind of nerve problem and can't use his left hand for much. Now I feel sorry for him.... If it is true that the motor nerves start out on the opposite side of the brain and cross over then left handed people are the only ones in their right mind lol.

It is nice to hear that a lot of people in your family are left handed. I can't believe that your mother can write with both hands like a mirror image. Yes, it will be fun to watch that. I am imagining it right now. I am sorry about your brother. Hope and pray he will be alright soon. Thanks for the response.

Ironically, I can't write with a left hand but I can type with a left hand, LOL..
When I was young, I tried to write with my left hand, but to no avail. I think it's gifted for those whom can write with their left ones. However, I'm pretty contented with my right one for now..

Lol. That is a good job. I can also type using my left hand. So, I should be happy that atleast I can do that. I use both my hands for typing and I type according to typing standards and rules. I like to watch people typing with left hand it is a gift. I am sad that I can't do that. Thanks for the response.

I've always written with my left hand though I can if needs be use my right hand. I'm quicker and neater using my left. I don't know why it would make you jealous though, most cultures either in the past or in some places even today, frown on it! Left-handedness was thought to be a sign of the Devil, Evil and something a child did to be awkward lol. It's also quite awkward, as the normal way of writing is from left to right and you either smudge your work or can't see it properly. Some left-handers hold their arm above the work and the pen or pencil is held differently too. Forcing them to use the right could cause all sorts of problems and they now know it's how a persons brain works and is often an inherited trait. I have two left-handed siblings, the others are all right-handed.
The number of people who are naturally left-handed is 10% of the population.

Yes sometimes it can have adverse effects if we try to force left-handed people to use there right hand. One of my friend's father used to force him to use right hand during childhood. Now my friend can write using only his right hand which is not his natural hand, pluse he keeps on writing opposite sometimes. Like he writes "p" as "q" and "d" as "b". It is very weird. We should not force children to use right hand if they do not want to use it.

I am a right handed person and I get sometimes jealous seeing people who can write with the right hand. I have tried it but I have not been able to do it. I had a friend in college who was able to write with his both hands. I used to envy him a lot. I mean in exams he used to have advantages over other people as he could switch hands when one starts feeling bit pain. Why should he have such an advantage.

I am a right handed and I am not that jealous of people that are using left hand. I mean it is just the matter of dominant only. No doubt you can see most left handed people are creative people. I am not saying that right handed people are not creative but less than the left handed ones.

Why should you be jealous towards them? They can't use their right hands like us.Some people are born left handed and they should be allowed like that.I don't think there will be any force from the parents on right hand usage.Just they choose the right to start with because most of us are right handed. But if the child is seem to be a left handed,we should allow them.Cheers!

Yes, we should allow kids to write the hand they like to write. If you read the above responses you can see that parents used to force kids to write with right hand, but I am seeing that it is reducing in this new gernaration. Yes, you are right, they can't write well with right hand, but I am still fascinated towards people who can write with left hand. THanks for the response.

why jealous those people can write with left hand ? i used to write using left hand also during my primary school, but my mom 'forced' me to write using right hand. so now i am right-handed for writing, others activity i am using left hand. for mylotting, i am using both hand!

I am also using my both hands for mylotting. I type using both hands following speical fingers for special letters. I mean following the rules of typing. I am jealous of them because I can't do what they can do. I think kids should not be forced to change their hand. They should be given freedom to choose their writing hand. Thanks for the response.

You seems exactly like me. I think we should give kids the option to choose whatever hand they want to use for writing. There is some scientific reason behind it. If a person is left handed, the right part of his brain is more active (something like that). You can see it in the responses above. So, please don't compell. Thanks for the response.

I am a right hander and I am happy that I use my right hand for few tasks and left hand for few tasks...I pity left handers as they burden their left hand with most of the tasks..Right hand is least used in their case...
It is good to guide the child to use right hand for writing...happy mylotting :-)

I am sorry to say that I disagree with you. I think if the child is a left handed person and interested to write with left hand, we should give him the freedom to do that. There is a scientific reason behind it. It says people who write using left hand have the right part of their brain active. Thanks for the response.

I am a lefty. I like being a lefty.
But life's just not fair enough coz there were some things that are only made for the right-handed individuals and if ever I'm gonna use some of those things, my friends always tease me and laugh because its so awkward for them seeing me handling those. I really don't get it.. They said it looks so funny. For example, chopping, I'm holding the knife using my left hand, my family or my friends said that it's better if they will be the one to do the chopping coz it looks like im having a difficulty where in fact i didnt! grrrrrr...hehehehe

I'm left-handed. I can say that it has many, many downsides. You're more likely to smear words on paper, and tools and other things are generally designed with right-handed people in mind. No consideration's put into place for people who are dominantly left handed, which results in a few thousands deaths a year due to left-handed people using right-handed equipment (fact, though I can't give an exact on the number. try googling it if you're interested)

I can't right with my right hand but I can use my mouse with both. I do not even thing about it. It works like that. I come across using my left hand stiring a pot of meat sauce and need my right hand to get the other side of the pot. This way I can mix it better. I prefer to have both. Keep my mind synced.

That is great. I think all the left handed people should read this and follow this. Writing using left hand doesn't make a big differnce but they can use both hands for other activities because most of the equipments and machines are designed keeping right handed people in mind. For example: sewing machine.

i am a left handed person. I write, eat and even wipe my (a) with my left hand. lol! Yes i too experience the non-inconvenient things or stuff at school. Though at our school they have special chairs that has the table attach at the left side of the chair. But i don't use it, because i feel like i am different. At that time i don't want to be different.
If i'm gonna have children and if they were left handed. I would let them, i will not practice them to write or do stuff with right hand. Because i believe left handed person are creative ones! happy mylotting!

That is a very good attitude. You should let your children write with whatever hand they want to - left or right. In olden times kids were forced to write using right hand, which is not advisible. I wish I could have a baby who writes with left hand, but my husband and I are right handed people. Thanks for the response.

I'm a right hander but i admire those who use their left hand to write or in general do their routine job. They are supposed to be very creative as their right part of the brain is more active! And believe me these people have amazing handwriting too - WOW!
One of my ex-boss was a lefty and i used to always stare at him and his hand whenever he used to write. Believe me, i have had embarrasing moments whe he would suddelnly look at me and i would be standing/sitting there admiring his left hand writing - LOL

Everyone can write with both hands provided we practice it. Most are right handers because it came naturally to us.Some people are by nature ambi- dexter meaning, they can use both hands effectively. We have two hemispheres in our brain. while the left hemisphere controls all activities of the right part of the body, and vice-versa. But most of us dont use the entire power of our brain, which is limitless. So it recommended, to improve the power of concentration and brain power, we have to practice writing with that hand which is not natural for us. So a left handed person, who is comfortable writing with his left hand must write a few pages with his right hand daily and vice- versa..thx

That is a new news for me. When I tried writing with my left hand it was very difficult and took along time to write atleast one line. So, I decided to drop the plan and keep writing with my right hand. Now, I decided to practice writing using my left hand. Let me see. Thanks for the response.

I am left-handed and when i was kid i tried to used my left hand to write but the result my handwriting was messy..it happened when i was about 5-6 years old,my mom forced me to write using my right hand. And when i was in elementary school, i used my right hand to write, but i still did my activities using my left hand, including playing piano and badminton.
Now my mom realized that parents can`t force their children tu use their right hands after she finds out that the best friend of mine is left-handed in he`s talented in drawing and designing. He studied product design and now he creates toys for several stores. I suggest that parents with left-handed children take their children to music course. It is also my experience. My mom told me to take piano course so i could maximize the use of left hand.and it works..Left-handed or not,it will depend on how we can develop our potential

Yes, no kid should be forced to use right hand. I think is forcing is a little reduced in this generation. The same thing happened with mu aunt also. She is a left handed person when she does all the other things except writing. She was forced to write using right hand by my grandma. Thanks for the response.
