The reason perhaps is Internet Explorer's popularity. When one installs Windows, Internet Explorer is also included as the default browser. There are no Mozilla operating system available now. Perhaps the other reason is that there are many companies who have trusted IE for years and they would not bother to switch to other browser. With the new IE8 enhanced security is added though I found it slow to load and I don't use IE8, I use either firefox or opera.

But starting with MS Windows 7, in accordance with EU competition rules, the European versions will include a ballot option to allow users to decide if they want Internet Explorer or another browser installed. Still, I'm sure most users will pick MS Internet Explorer.

I didn't read through the responses, but I will tell you one thing that makes a bit difference - MARKETING. MOST PCs come pre-installed with IE. People have it there, they don't have to do anything different, so they keep it - that's how AO(hel)L got so popular too. Although Macs are gaining in popularity, they are still a bit behind PCs, so there are more people being exposed to IE right off the bat.
I must admit that I was a HUGE IE fan until very recently - 4 months or so, and I've been using IE for about 15 years. I had tried Mozilla and Safari before (and NetSc(r)ape eons ago) but I was never very happy with them. There are still a few features that Firefox (my now-preferred browser) does not have that I need at work, but it does handle a few things (some of my games) better.
Another thing I just thought of is that a lot of programs are not compatible with other browsers - there are some surveys that I take that I have to use IE for still.

may be it is because you get IE with the Windows(OS) and people just don't bother to look for a better browser...many are unaware of the existence of firefox and even if they get to know they think about the safety....for me even though I knew about firefox and it's features It took me about a year to finally switch to firefox...

The reason could be due to people like me who has been using IE and too lazy to switch to firefox. Sometimes people are too lazy to make the switch. Though I know firefox has many more advantages expecially that I am a blogger. I face lots of trouble with IE when blogging, yet, still not making the switch. Soon, my friend, soon.. you'll see firefox topping!

A PC with any version of Windows has IE pre-installed or bundled. Most users wouldn't bother to install any other browser because for one IE already cater for most of their internet browsing needs. For Firefox and others there is at once the "want" thing (for what ever reason that may be) because they have to get it to use it.) Quantity sometimes is not every thing. Beside wouldn't it be nice to have a browser that adjust to our need and not the other way around.

Lazy programmers who write ActiveX controls that run on Internet Explorer. Stupid and annoying. A problem with Firefox is the slowness of the XUL interface that's basically a javascript rendered user interface. Though, if you want the Gecko engine with a fast user interface, grab K-Meleon.

The main reason is compatibility issue. Most websites are designed and optimised for IE. As such there are websites which do not work fully when viewed with other browsers.
It is a situation which would be hard to change. For example redesigning a website involves time and money. This makes many company directors not allowing any changes to their websites.
If we talk about speed, memory usage, program size, and security, IE is way behind compared to certain other browsers. Unfortunately the majority who are resistant to change rules out any browser from overtaking IE in the near future.

The reason why IE appears to be so popular is that PCs always come pre-installed with a Windows operating system and so most people use what ever they are given. It's once you realise that IE is not that safe and often has bugs that you start to look around at what else is on offer which for many is Firefox.
I am sure that if Firefox was pre-installed on PCs when you buy one it would be the most popular purely down to the fact that people don't look around at what else there is.

Mozilla is the best browser among all and also has lots of features.
When it comes to popularity mozilla is becoming popular now a days very fast.
Most people uses IE the reason is around 90% of the computer runs on windows and IE comes bundeled with windows and most of non technical persons who are using computer for sake of using will use same browser with their computers this is the main reason behind this....

the main reason that IE is still in the lead is the fact that IE comes pre-installed on all windows machines, and is impossible to uninstall. Firefox is much more user-friendly, and is a much more stable web browser. firefox has many more features than IE, and an ever growing number of add-ons available on the internet.firefox is far superior to IE, but because IE functions correctly, people see no need to make the switch to Firefox.
