Hello myLotters. It's time to get a new desktop for me. My current desktop is like 10 years old? I am quite a PC 'idiot' and I dont know much about computer stuffs. All I know is, there has been lots of promotion going on amongst these 3 major brands, Acer, Dell and HP. Many people has advised me against Acer and told me to go for Dell or HP instead. Any of you have any knowledge about these 3? Which would you recommend me to get and why? Please advise.

Hi,I am worse than you...my knowledge on PC is very elementary. Most of the time I will get my son to help out. When I go around survey for laptop, most of myfriends suggest HP... I am using Acer because it is one of the cheapest in the market, moreover, my company specifically request for Acer...to be very frank, I do not really like it. Wow, someone is getting a new pet (laptop).. Cheer:)

No one is better than anyone here in PC. Well, you can gain your knowledge only by encounter the problem, and find the solution to it. Otherwise, you never be able to learn. For me too, as a beginner a few years ago, I am such a PC "idiot" too. Now, I gain more and more knowledge from it. I can improve myself to a better level.

submerryn.. you hit me with this topic.. I am not a computer PRO, however I like to shop for computer deals especially during PC Fair.. I will normally source around for the price before the fair, and later go all the way there just to grab what I want.. and usually the last day, coz better deals I get.. I am currently using ACER, and has been a good fan of it, coz I have better discount from the distributor.. and most of my friends fancy Dell, because they could order the PC online, get it delivered and better, having good after sales service. I personally not tried the ACER after sales service (and I hope I don't have too) however since some friends tried using Dell, and they commented that Dell do give a very good ones.. As for HP, with that kind of higher price you pay, it's will be more for the branding.. My cousin uses HP, and he seems to say not much of a difference.. or maybe you want to consider to built one from scratch?

Hello cwong77, I almost fainted when I read your last sentence! I wont be able to built from scratch since I am such an 'idiot' in this line. I guess now it is the running between Dell and Acer. That Higher Priced brand I think will be out. Or is it? Because my hubs can kinda get a better deal from that Higher Priced brand... but it's nice to hear that your Acer is working well. At least now I have the confidence in Acer.

PC Fair? Nah, I'd only buy accessories from there. Certainly not mainboards or the entire PC. People have been duped there, too. If you want to buy a desktop it's best you pay a personal visit to the a reliable PC Store near you. Sometimes... i said SOMETIMES... it pays to buy something expensive but of a better quality. It's best to shop around for the same brand. Then compare the prices and the services offered.

Base on my experience I use HP motherboard and see it good in handling processors and the graphics is good enough to handle many online games.I did not recommend Acer, because as many of my friends using it. They experience some problems in their PC or laptops. About Dell I think it is good also but the bad things is that they posses branded name where you cannot buy parts computer stores... have a great day!

Even do you cannot use in online games. Graphics is also one thing in a computer because it speed up the uploading of image. In all websites today, their graphics is very much higher and require more graphics to upload it faster. That's is only my suggestion my friend. Because as a computer technician in many years, I tried more system boards to see who is better performance and it's heating capability to make sure that processor and the memory will not suffer enough to stay the cool and it's processing speed cannot be affected. I always consider the speed and I see that HP vs Dell. I choose HP than Dell, my friend. But it depend on you the availability in your area... I suggest you not to use windows vista, because it slow down the speed of your computer. This operating system has many complain about affecting computer processing speed. Even that operating system has better firewall protection and more feature in it. I did not recommend it because it's uploading system is very much slower in terms of uploading files and internet browsing... Have a great day!

Aerous, Does that means it is hard to get Dell's spare part? Oh dear, if that is so, I really have to check out the spare part sources before deciding as I do not want the hassle of going up and down looking for one tiny little parts in the future. I do not play online games at the moment. I use my PC mainly for my blogging job and myLot.. :)

I suggest go in for Dell they are really good......and has been into the business since a long time......My cousin uses dell and he is quite happy with it and even I am planning to buy one real soon......specially because of the service and support after sales.......they have a team of technical support over the phone so you save a lot of money........as if you take your machine to your local vendor they will charge you like hell......and also it comes with 5 years of warranty, which means if anything goes bad they would dispatch it free of cost after their troubleshooting is done........ Its just my advice.......you can see what others have to say !!!!!

John4Christ, Hi there. Really? Dell gives out 5 years warranty? I must really call them to check. If this is so, then it is really good to know! Then I might just go for Dell too. I love extended warranty period. It really gives me the peace of mind.

Ohk, I guess they initially give you one year warranty and then you can go ahead and extend it for 4 years........so totally that makes it 5 years.......I suggest you go to their website and check that out........

I have a laptop but my son has a desktop. I will give you my opinion with the a little help from my son. HP is more expensive. They have a big name and has been around for decades. Their quality is high and relieable. Dell is also expensive, unless you find them on sale. They also have a big name and have been around for awhile. Acer is less expensive, just as good as HP and Dell. They offer the same qualities and warranty as the others. I would recommmend ACER I have a Acer for over a year now and have had zero problems and paid extermly less for it with the same specs as the others.

Hi gurusidha, Hahaha, here I am headache thinking of which desktop to buy and you are there waiting for a party! What you've said about Dell is a very strong point to consider. I've always afraid of after sales service. If Dell can provide a good and reliable after sales service, then one point for them here! Thanx..

To pick the best PC for yourself. I really recommend you to go for Dell or HP then. Since they are really good in reputation. I won't exclude the possibility there are bad Dell and HP computers too. Actually, depends on how you gonna use your PC. Most hardware components of those PC are pretty much similar. The only choice you want to make is how much customer service they gonna offer to you, and how much help you will get once the pc gonna into trouble.

You are consider so lucky can use a desktop last for 10 years time. It is pretty good already. Mine all these while, the CPU only last for 5-6 years then it kaput. I have been using many brand of desktop before and I highly suggest you go for DELL. So far, I don't find any problem with it. The parts are all geniune and I find it durable, CPU design also update to date and modern one...Price wise it is affordable too and it is quite near to other brands too. I really love the DELL brand now and my laptop also go for DELL..

I m using Dell desktop, my sons are Dell laptop and Toshiba laptop. If you want to purchase a new pc, u can go to computer fairs that are held few times per year, u can get good prices from there. If u buy Dell, they dont provide installation service for u, they just deliver and u have to do your own setup.. so provided u have someone to help u, then it shouldnt be a problem, Dell is a good brand...

Besides normal warranty and extended warranty (which you most likely will have to pay extra), the MOST IMPORTANT thing to consider is the after sales service. Some companies offer fantastic deals but when you have technical problems, they'll beat around the bush, or take their own time to respond. I've been a strong supporter of Compaq (notebooks) and I've also been using a HP desktop at work. There was a problem with my 2-year-old Compaq recently, i sent it to the service centre, and got it back in less than 2 weeks. They replaced the mainboard free and there was no service charge (the mainboard came with a 2-year warranty, something which I didn't know). I like their professionalism, too. The Dell computers that my company has have been giving loads of problems, and the technician had problems getting in touch with the main office. It's been frustrating for him. So based on MY personal experience, I'd still go for a Compaq notebook or a HP desktop if I had to change my computer some day.

submerryn it is not very to say which PC are the best. As per the brand name all three company are the best in world market. First decide configuration you want to take. Think your budget. Then only suggestion can be given. Same time please specify what do you want to do with PC ie, playing games,or do just for your work.

Hi rajupaul. I need the desktop mostly for online purposes. I'm a blogger so I need them to run fast. Games are not so important to me. I saw Acer comes with so many specifications, I cant really recall them now. But HP and Dell are like more expensive yet doesnt come with all those provided by Acer. Yet, people are still telling me not to get Acer.. Headache!

I would prefer a HP due to its performance and durability. The Hp has been among the tops with a good customer satisfaction rate.HP Pc's are very well carved out in terms of style, varsity, elegance and demands very less maintain.

I have used all three makes of these computers and found them all very good. The HP though did last the longest. I had that for about 5 years before it was getting too slow for modern programs I was putting in it. Currently, I have had one built by a small firm, so it is not a well-known make, but it is very reliable too. I got it from PC Specialists in the UK. - Derek

my recommendation is also dell. however, I don't buy systems from a company. I buy the components myself and combine them. If you are familiar with PC hardware, then I think you should try that way. It would be much more affordable than buying the whole system from a vendor. However, If I had to choose one of them I would definetely stay away from acer, and go for dell. HP is something in the middle for me. Thanks and happy mylotting.

Hi I have been using computer a long time back when you could start the computer and go get a cup of coffee and maybe it would be up and running. I build them for my own use and some time will do one for friends ok to answer your question. It will not matter what brand you want to use they all are goood companies your do not need a lot of computer to do the internet just a 1.8 gig CPU or higher I would get at least 1meg of memory. or as much as you can afford the higher the memory the better the computer will run to a point. my wife likes Dell, and would not let me build her one, so She got a Dell She like to to do graffics, word processing. My daughter like HP so she will buy everything that is HP even Cameras. Aser is good and have good prices. HP and Dell cost a little more and you are paying for the good name of the companies. Computer brands are all the same basicly they have the same CPU Ther is only two main companies. Use the same memory here is only three companise that make memory and a few companies that make the other parts of the computer So I guess it comes down to price buy what you can afford and it will be a good computer for you best to you Donald

In my opinion Dell should be ok, they have good customer service. U can always contact their customer service if there's any problem on ur desktop. Personally, I would choose IBM (which u don't list here). That's the best!

I have been building my own computers for a while now, but I and several family members have owned a Dell computer in the past. I have an old Windows 2000 computer that I never use, but is still running today. Dell has a very good warranty and great service when you need it.
