Has anyone had a relationship with a person with bipolar disorder?

I am currently in a relationship with a guy who has type one bipolar disoder. I think at present he's suffering from mania if you know what I'm talking about. He seems to want his own space and see me when it suits him. I haven't seen him for over three weeks. He is also reluctant to give me his cell phone number, and won't say where he works. Is it him or his illness? Should I be more understanding and patient? I should add that suffers from dellusions and is paranoid. I do love him very much, but it's really difficult.
