I think to a degree they can. My cat definitely has people he loves and people he hates. It's very clear which camp you fall in. If he really doesn't like you, he'll pee in your shoes while you're in them. I don't know if animals have creative thoughts like I do but it would be really interesting to tap into their personalities if such a thing exists.
