Artichoke Question...Are they worth your time?

Ok, I know that sounds like a strange question but the reason I am asking is because of something my mother said recently. Personally, I love artichokes. I think they taste great and they're definitely one of my absolute favorite vegetables. To eat them, I microwave them for five minutes in a plastic bag, then let them sit to cool off. Then I cut out the heart of the artichoke from the bottom, clear off all the artichoke hairs, break the artichoke apart, put it in a bowl with a tiny bit of margarine or butter and a tiny bit of salt. I like the flavor so well that I can eat them plain but I think they taste even better with a little butter and salt, not too much though. So I was talking to my mother and telling her that I was having an artichoke and she said the most amazing thing, she said "Artichokes are too much work for what you get." Ok, that's weird I thought. If you like the taste of something, as I do artichokes, then how is it too much work to eat one? All you do is scrape off the artichoke from its leaves and it tastes great. Is it so different from crab or lobster really? Well other than the obvious of one is a vegetable and one is meat, but I mean how you have to cook them and crack the shells and eat them. I like to eat for enjoyment and eat foods that taste good that I like. My mother also says buffet restaurants are not worth going to because you can't eat enough food to justify the expense. My mom has some funny ideas about food. What about you, do you think artichokes are too much work?

I too LOVE artichokes, and you can eat much more than the heart. I slice the top most portion, about an inch or 2 off, then clip the pointed ends of the exposed leaves, thenI boil them in a pot of lightly salted water with a sliced lemon and about a teaspoon of peppercorns. If you cook them this way you can pull each leaf and at the base is a soft yummy portion you can scrape off with your teeth, as you get closer tot he center you can eat the small tender leaves entirely. We usually serve them with melted butter and lemon juice for dipping the leaves in, and put a large bowl in the center of the table to throw the inedible top parts of the leaves. Compared to other food preps...this isn't so bad!

okay - I've had fresh artichokes a few times and they are entertaining to eat - I don't care for the canned ones much, too... well, too something... but I can't say that I'd care to eat it too often just to let ya know, I don't like crabs or lobster
