Are television commercials effective?

I watch television daily. With the remote control, I quickly click to change channels the moment the network program pauses for commercials. I recently realized that I have not seen commercials in a long time? Could tv ads really be effective?

I think it all depends on the commercial. If it is a good commercial then it will be more effective then a bad one. One thing I have found with commercials though is that ones with a jingle often stick in my head longer then ones that do not.

There is this one commercial here in the UK for 118 247 that has this jingle that I can't get out of my head.

I viewed many commercials. You are right. The jingle matters.

The effectiveness of commercials have been greatly diminishd by technology. I for one avoid them as much as I can because I am such a sucker (I suppose we all are because by nature, we are loyal to things which we already know). I use the PIP function in my television (picture-in-picture) so that I can monitor if the commercials are over in the channel that I am watching. TIVO has also reduced the audience for commercial. Remember when we were younger (at least when I was) when remote control was not yet invented and you had to sit through the commercials? I was always suffering from LSS then (Last Song Syndrome) and I knew the commercials by heart. I have to admit though that there are times that I purposely seek out commercials especially when I am contemplating a buy. Nowadays, I have the choice not to be bombarded by commercials, and most of the time I don't watch them anymore.

Yes, I think infomercials are very effective in that those that see them wants to try the foods or products they see in TV, even only once. I see and these on the teachers I have contact everyday.... they like softdrinks such as coke, sprite, etc... Foods especially Jollibee, MacDo, Pizza. What we usually see on TV are imbedded in the mind that one of these day I would like to try them to see if it really "tastes good, feels the same, or brings back the same memories" just as the commercial portrays it.

The softdrinks had been there a long time. As to the infomercials, I think you are referring to the deli dial like 9111111 for pizza. The food itself is given. Everyone knows pizza and McDo taste or even KFC. No need for commercials for that. Just more marketing strategies.

Not to me because I don't watch commericals. If they come on I usually switch channels to see whatelse is on or I get up to do something. I really can't stand commericals. I hear alot of people don't watch and do the same thing I do so I don't think they could be very effective to me.

Ditto here! Commercials are waste of time viewing for me.

I suppose companies wouldn't spend millions and millions of dollars on it if it wasn't doing something. It probably works best when there is a new product or a special deal or something like that.

True. Millions of dollars had been spent to make the consumers remember their products. And the companies are gaining. Good argument!

Some of the commercials are effective while others are not. In most cases, I am influenced by products endorsed by known artists. I want to try a product which I believe they also use. Also, I find great impact on commercials having sensible thoughts, nice theme songs, etc.

You must be an artist for liking the storyboards and the themes. As it is, endorsers do not actually use the product even if they are given supply free for a year.
