I don't own a DSLR or any high-end cameras, but, I do know that professional photographers gain money through selling their shots. Aside from wedding occasions, you could also try selling yours in deviantArt.

Upload your best photos to Zazzle.com or Cafepress and turn them into T-shirts, mouse pads, mugs, shoes, stamps, postcards, skateboards... lets the site sell what you produce and pay you a commission (you set your own commission). Easy...if you pictures are any good, that is.

You can upload your photos on some of the websites such as www.fotolia.com and istock.com. They will pay you per download or even purchase. However, their requirements and criteria of aceepting the photos are very strict as well. Happy trying.

There are many ways to make money with taking pictures. You could just do some portraits for family members and get them to pay you, or if you are more serious, you should look into selling the pics as stock photography on Deviant Art, or some other art site.
