My computers connection has been slowing down for a while now. Then a few days ago Windows security center popped up with a warning that my virus protection had expired & recommended & install a program called SaveDefense. After loading the program it detected all kinds of hijackers & spywear on my computer but I would have to pay for the upgrade to for SaveDefense to remove them. I paid the 49.95 online & got the code I needed, ran the program & removed all the programs. My connection did seem to get a little better but I still had pop ups coming in. Then my wife noticed that they'd actually charged me $100. There's the red flag. At that point I did my research & found out that SaveDefense was actually the program that had been causing the problems all along.
OMG, I just got scammed big time.... It's taken me all night to clean up my system properly ( still not sure I've completely got it ) & tomorrow I get to try to get my money refunded.
I feel like such a putz....
Has this kind of thing happened to anyone else? If it hasn't gotten you already consider this a warning.

This sort of scam has been around for some time. The Microsoft operating system has many holes, which are exploited by scammers and others with bad intention.
I do not trust pop ups or emails telling me to upgrade my antivirus program. The one that I am using, CIS, auto updates. Many exploits go through Internet Explorer, and at times using Firefox. Thanks for the warning though.

This thing had actually corrupted my windows security center where it told me my old virus protection had expired & recommended I use SaveDefense to replace it & included a link... It wasn't from a pop up or email. This thing had been setting me up for months apparently.

Winfows Security Center would have recommended or reminded users to update or renew the licence, not recommending something which was unheard of. They are getting smarter, messing up with Windows and using the system to fool the user.
If your antivrus and firewall were very good, then most probably the hackers exploted the weaknesses of the browser(s) that you use while surfing the Internet. Your antivirus was tricked into believing the code was legit.

That really stinks.
I'm glad sconibear knows some stuff about computers because I have no clue and probably would have messed everything up by now.
Good luck getting your money back.

The SON of my BIL almost fell for this same one, well almost the same one; lucky he gave the wrong numbers. Well the bank called him and quite alot of charges were made from over seas, over $500.00 worth; but lucky the bank did not take it from his account, as he had typed the wrong numbers. Because the card was tied directly to his bank account.

Real defense never comes to you, but you have to come to them for it to help you. I have been in that path too, just try to follow my advice okay?
