Brown or White Rice?

I used to always buy white rice. Then I kept reading about how much better brown rice is for us. So the past year or so I have been buying brown rice. No one seems to mind and the kids eat it. Do you have a preference over brown or white rice?

I like them both and I think they are equally good for you. They might have their different benefits...it will be interesting to see if someone here has details on this rice issue!

Well the thing about white rice is that it's bleached to be white. so that makes it unhealthy as opposed to brown rice which is naturally brown. Same thing with the white bleached flower versus the unbleached one, and white sugar vs.the slightly brown sugar.

Ah yes I've heard that too, same as white sugar. Seems like the big manufacturers like to use chlorine or something.

I think you're right about them having different benefits.

I really like rice, so it doesn't matter if it's white or brown. Of course, brown healthier. I like to make my rice with vegetables.

I like brown rice, but we do not eat rice very often. I have found that they even make an instant brown rice. I would eat more rice if more people in my house like it. We mostly eat potatoes.

That can be a problem when nobody else likes it. Maybe if you keep serving it then eventually they will like it.

I like white rice because it makes the food stand out more if it has a white background. Brown rice has its own taste and I never acquired the flavor. White for me.

No I like them both the same. I can't ever tell the difference unless of course I have it served to me plain and see the color.

Brown rice is good but white rice tastes better. So most of us prefer this. Once you start liking brown rice then there is no problem.

I have to agree. The white rice does taste a bit better. I still cook the brown though.

I have always liked brown rice better myself. It has a better flavor then plain white rice. I have heard that it is heathier then white rice also.

I have tried brown rice several times and hated the flavor every time, too "nutty" for me, I don't like nuts

I don't really have a preference, though for some reason or another I tend to buy the white rice. I think it might be because my husband prefers it, though I can't seem to remember at the moment! LOL I don't know if our kids would like it anyway. They're so accustomed to eating white rice that they may think brown rice is some sort of foreign food! LOL Happy mylotting!

I think a lot more food seems to go better with the white rice too. My daughter looked at me weird the first time I served brown rice. Then she realized that she liked it, thank goodness.

I prefer white rice, which I know isn't as good for me. I especially love Jasmine rice! I know that brown rice is just rice with the hull on and has good things in it but it just tastes nasty to me. Good for you, feeding your family what's best for them!

Jasmine rice is the "sticky" rice you get in Chinese restaurants. It has a faintly nutty aroma and tastes delicious! It costs a little more but it's SO worth it!

Oh wow! Here I thought it was just called white rice. Little did I know it was Jasmine rice.

Hi there Shar19 Well I changed from white pasta to wholemeal but only for certain dishes. For some things it just doesn't taste right. I have never really tried brown rice as it takes so much longer to cook and have always thought it wouldn't taste as nice. I am sure it is more expensive too, things that are better for you are generally more pricey!!

I have tried whole wheat pasta (spaghetti) but I can't get into it yet for some reason.

I agree it doesn't taste right with certain things. I think it's best plain or with some butter.

Yeah I have tried spaghetti and it doesn't work too well. We have the twists or penne and it works well with tuna bake. You need to have lots of sauce with it because they seem drier somehow and you need to allow longer cooking time. Good luck

I like white rice better than brown rice. I don't really like the flavor of brown rice, and I like to pour butter on my white rice, but it doesn't taste right on my brown rice.

I am not much of a rice eater at all but my husband is. We eat rice occasionally but it is always the white rice. I have never tried the brown rice. Does it taste the same or is there a difference?

Brown rice is more of a nutier flavor, a bit stronger than white rice. Give it a try.

i honestly like brown rice better for taste, but white rice for time. brown seems to take twice as long to cook than the other.

I don't mine either. But since I am a shopper by cost I'll probably stick with the white as I can get 3# long grain for say $1.75 @ Aldi. I did take a peek and I can buy store brand elsewhere for brown it was about the same price but for only 2#'s. Perhaps I'll mix them both up in a container and I'll have rice confetti *LOL*

RIce doesn't matter to me. I'll eat basically any kind since I love rice. My family does not like that I eat so much of it because we could run out so fast, and I have the biggest appetite. I found out that I could eat 1.5 pounds of rice at one meal after buying a 2 pound bag at a grocery store. So we have to buy a large bag from costco. Usually, it's the 20 pound bag of Bashmati rice, but in a short amount of time, I could go through half of it myself.
