Why don't people bother to use correct grammer, spelling, and punctuation?

I found this question on another site and I thought it was a great question to ask. I don't think it matters much in a discussion forum. Better get it right on your resume! If you can get the spelling right, all else doesn't matterrrrrrrr.

It's not that people don't want to use correct spelling or grammar (By the way you misspelled "grammar"). many people here aren't from an English speaking country, so they do their best.

For starters, American English isn't the only form of English ;) That and non native English speakers aside... Some people don't care. Others are simply ill educated. In one place I lived, between three homes with a combined total of 9 people who have made it to at least the 10th grade, I was the only one who could spell the difference between there, their, and they're. The grammar that came from the people in those two houses (all American born and educated, btw) would've convinced me that none of them had made it passed the third grade. I once looked at my neighbor and had to say "I'm sorry, could you please translate? I don't speak that language".. :/

Thank you all for your responses and for catching the "grammar" error. FYI, I was a spelling Bee contestant back in grade school.

There is a difference in spelling in the UK and US English and hence sometimes the spelling appears so. Even if the correct spelling is typed it shows an error sometimes so many leave it as it is. The spelling is grammar and not grammer also.

While it's true that there are people out there who have legitimate reasons (they are new to the country, English is not their first language, and they are still learning), there are plenty of people out there who have probably lived here all of their lives, who just never really bothered to learn the language. THAT is what really bugs me.

most of the people in the world are not English speakers. for those who are native english-speakers, they don't mind if the grammar is incorrect, or if others didn't get the spelling right, as long as they can understand them. You cannot expect all people to know everything especially when it comes to English. Like I said, most people don't speak English... properly, i might add...

Well okay first good English isn't a good gauge for a person's IQ, but most of the time, people whose English are good learn and absorb better especially because most books and medium of instruction use English. So I can just imagine the predicament of those whose English aren't good. Especially the ones who can neither understand nor speak or express in English. However, we must understand these people. In public forums like these, sometimes because it's hard to get what they mean, I do get annoyed and tend to skip their discussions. I agree language barrier is a BIG BARRIER!

Well I haven't actually noticed alot of adults over 25 using bad grammar, but I have noticed the younger you go, the worst off it is. I have a fourteen year old sister and she can't spell or use good grammar at all! She is in a boarding school right now and when we receive her letters, the voice in her words are very mature but you wouldn't notice it looking at her spelling and grammar. I mean, it is horrible. And then you look at chat sites, myspace, facebook, texting and you'll see that children misspell words ALL the time. Words that don't even need to be subsized for text speak. It blows my mind! I mean, boyfriend struggles with grammar and spelling sometimes but its just because its not his forte. And I help him when he needs it. But I am very worried for our younger generation. Even young adults my age (I'm 20) have just as bad spelling and grammar. I just don't get it!
