I know and well aware that its not healthy that's why i want to stop drinking soda. Im afraid about all these diseases you get with too much sugar...but i can't help it. i can drink up to 10 cans a day. I dont even drink water sometimes, just soda. I tried quitting but just like any addiction, it gives me head aches. Does anyone know a better way to at least replace soda from my system? HELP? ANYONE?

If you cut caffeine back too quickly you can end up with headaches and may even have your eyelids swell. You will need to cut it back gradually. The soda or fizzy part of soda eats away at your bone structure. It also strips your stomach lining down. So, those are the reasons to wean yourself off of soda. If you are drinking diet soda that is even worse because many of the artificial sweeteners in the foods we buy actually stimulate our appetites. Isn't that just great. You are already aware of the problems with sugar, but a good book to read on sugar is "Sugar Busters" on the sugar subject. The book entitled "The Gabriel Method" is a wonderful book for someone who is not sure what is healthy and what is not and how to get from one point to the other. Little by little experiment with different drinks to find out what you like. I have a large amount of different choices of things to drink. I like different herbal teas and have gone from just the teas you find in the grocery store to teas that you drink to strengthen different parts of the body. I like to take the different herbal teas in the grocery store and mix them. One of my favorites is Apple Cinnamon and Blueberry. I just like that combination. As an added attraction to my drink, I have learned that the cinnamon evens out my blood sugar level and the blueberry works on the small vein structure of my body. In the meantime, I like the taste. There are also coffee substitutes that could be used for a hot drink. It is difficult to switch though in flavor. Maybe a more natural type of soda from the health food store or an organic coffee would be a better way to have a "treat" once in a while when you really get the urge for soda or caffeine. Sweeteners like agave, stevia, or xylitol could be good natural substitutes for sugar. Honey can also be used in moderation. Fruit juices can almost be as bad as soda pop because of the sugar levels. For a pick-me-up cold drink, I like liquid chlorophyll flavored with peppermint or spearmint. I can't tolerate the unflavored versions. Liquid chlorophyll is dark dark green in color and you mix it with water. You may think that by the way it looks it would be awful. It is one of the best things you can drink. It feeds the body and adds oxygen to your blood. It will help you to feel better, but do not drink a lot of it or your body may end up throwing off toxins quickly and you will think that you have a bad cold. Once a day to start with is what I do. Visit you local health food store and ask someone there to point out drink options. Ask them to explain what each option may or may not do for you. Make a list of what appeals to you. Try some items. Search out more information on the internet. Before you know it you will have quite an arsenal of good things to drink and the guys at the soda company won't be getting rich off of you anymore. As with any dietary changes, be sure to see a doctor for their advice. Happy MyLotting!

I was discussing your question with a friend. They suggested that there is a very simple plan for getting off of caffeine in a book that she had read. The book is "Your Body, Your Diet" by Elizabeth Dane, Ph.D. The information is on pages 100-101, not a long read and looks easy to follow. My friend could not find this book in our library system so she went to this web page at Amazon.com and ordered a used copy for $.47 US plus shipping. http://www.amazon.com/Your-Body-Diet-Complete-Boosting/dp/0345479114/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1251676076&sr=1-1 Elizabeth Dane has taken care of many people involved in the entertainment business over the years and had offices in New York and Los Angeles and Virginia. She has partially retired and only has an office in Virginia at this time. She has a web page, but I could not find any information there concerning her plan for kicking caffeine and soda.

I did not mean to scare you. While fright will motivate for a time, it is feeling good about a decision that will make a permanent change. When you see how good you may feel from the chlorophyll, for instance, you will tend to use that instead of coffee. I still really really like a good cup of coffee or a soda once in a while. I may drink it on a special occasion like an anniversary or a holiday. I try to have something really special like an organic coffee when I do treat myself. In the meantime, make it a fun change. Experiment with a lot of different ideas. Sometimes I like to make my own lemonade with lemon juice, water, and agave or stevia for a natural sweetener. It is fun to juice different vegetables and fruits for a nice drink. I like the combo of a couple of handfuls of frozen strawberries, a couple of cups of apple juice, and a banana or two. Think of yourself as being stuck in a rut with only a few choices for right now. It's time to expand your possibilities far beyond anything you could have imagined. It's a whole new world!

Wow, that's a lot of soda. I used to be somewhat addicted to soda because I used to get up early and I really needed the sugar to jump-start my system. I finally broke the addiction, though, and my husband was EXTREMELY addicted to Mountain Dew when we first got together. I made him stop drinking so much when we moved in together because we couldn't afford it. He was drinking anywhere from 2-4 liters a day. Not good. I think the key is to limit yourself. Replace the soda with something at least slightly healthier. My problem is that I absolutely hate water. Period. But when I exercise I drink water and only water (I hate anything else when I work out), so I started working out enough to drink at least 3-4 cups of water while I was working out and I substituted the rest of the times with other things I liked, such as tea, kool aid, milk, etc. Now I barely even drink soda. I might have one can of soda every few days, but not much more than that. I've found that after that initial phase of getting over it I really don't crave it much anymore unless I'm really tired and in need of sugar. :)

I know what you mean! I love to drink soda too. Only in my case I drink diet soda. Maybe you can switch to diet, so that at least you won't have to worry about the sugar and the calories. They even have flavored water, which is a good substitute for soda.

Yeah I agree, there are some nice flavoured waters on the market and I also always drink diet drinks, I very rarely actually drink a drink that is not diet.

You can buy the one liter bottle of soda, not the cans. Buy a bag of ice to go along with that. Pour the soda into a glass over the ice. Believe it or not, it actually does work. I was as bad as you are at one time, when i was buying the cans. When you pour the soda over the ice, it begins to weaken it, because of the ice. It is very good though, unless, like i do, you leave it sitting sometimes, and it melts down quicker than you want it too. In that case, i usually dump the watered drink off, and add some more soda.

wow, am only a coffee drinker with the required 3 cups dialy and i get headaches also. i can't imagine how worse it is for you since a beverage like soda is only advised i think once a day. in psychology you have to know the root reason why you keep doing the 10 sodas a day. does it make you feel different in a good way since it shows you can afford it? do you feel good because it gives you a boost? or do you cover up something and it just happens that it is soda you got hold of and before you know it you're downing 10 cans a day? peace .

OMG! this is scary.... especially since you are aware of the dangers of it. Don't go cold turkey but slowly decrease the amount u drink. The first week make it a point to drink seven sodas and replace the other three with water. Make yourself a goals list, but be sure to include dates dont generalize. This way it will be more serious. OVerall, think about ur health! PLZ PLZ PLZ, stop drinking your way into diabetes.....

As with any addiction its within youirself to break it. You can cut down a little each day. Or just go cold turkey. I dont drink that junk anymore. It all has to do with will power.

Hello! I hardly can ever drink soda it makes me feel very bloated and full and actually sometimes it is hard to get down . My fiance that is all he drinks and maybe 5 cans a day but he likes it warm . Id say try some ice teas, or flavored waters and see how that goes.

Ah finally someone who was like me before. I drink a lot of soda too in my time. I am very hyper and spend so much energy. This keeps me going. It's the caffeine you know. I did manage to let it go eventually and geared myself for the impact of withdrawal. It was hard at first but I willed myself to do it. As we get older our bodies may not use up all that stored energy in the soda. So it will have an impact in our health. I still do exercise a lot but that is still not a reason why I should abuse myself with lots of sugar and caffeine. I started out by slowing down my 2 liters a day of soda. I managed to bring it down to a bottle a day. Then nowadays I really don't drink it at all. Perhaps once or twice a week just to keep me in fix. Lol. But I still do keep moving around and be really active. Exercise a lot every other day if possible. I also used to be fat. But I'm slowly burning it all down to be fit. Hmmm. wait I think I want some soda. Cheers!

I drink alot of soda as well. I used to drink regular mountain dew by the half gallon. Well I started to gain a little weight...not much but enough to make a difference to me. So I started drinking Diet Mountain dew. I drink about a liter a day. I love it. I just try to even it out with water intake as well. You need to drink water. It is very important to drink alot of water. especially if you are drinking alot of pop. I have gotten bladder infections from drinking too mouch pop and not enough water. Be careful and try drinking more water.

I think the best thing for your body is just to stop drinking it and drink loads of water to flush out all of the chemicals from your body! It wiil be tough and you will get headaches and a loss of energy, but this is just your body detoxing! The energy that you get from these drinks is fake anyway, it is short term only! I went through these types of symptoms when I gave up those drinks as well as coffee. You just have to trust that the pain is short and you will come out the other side feeling better than you ever have before!

The best way to rid yourself of this bad habit is to read the label of ingredients prior to each sip of soda. Not only will it take up a good amount of your time and leave less room for drinking, but it will educate you as to what you are putting into your body. And leave the Koolaid behind too.

I was addicted to sugar also. Not so much with soda, but with other sugar-containing foods. One day, I just made a commitment to my doctor that I would quite eating all sugar for 6 months to see if I would start feeling better. At first I craved like crazy - but still kept to my commitment. Then the craving went and I didn't feel too well for about a month of so. The I started to feel better and didn't even want sugar-products any more. It was not just the cakes and other sugar products, but ALL products that contained sugar that I had to quit to lose the craving. In my experience, there is only one way to do this, and that is to go cold-turkey. The withdrawel symptoms won't last forever. - Derek

i love sodas though i am not addicted to it. i can easily avoid it. but i can't avoid drinking sometimes when i have some sodas on my ref. so what i do i don't buy on groceries on bulk. i just buy actually powder juice. but it is not that healthy also. so what i do now i just prepare my own juice of out herbs. i put them in blender and i will let it pass the strainer to take the leaves off or paste and just save the juice to drink it or sip later. i try to be healthy. though i love juices and sodas. i try to change my habits. i don't go eating in fast foods cause the temptation to buy sodas are big. i just stay away from temptations. what i think you should do is don't buy any more. try to find some other foods or juice that you will love to drink. sometimes i do have to buy any thing nutritious and healthier though it may cost me more initially. cause i think that it is worth it to pay a price for my health.

You could try to reduce the amount of soda you take gradually. It may take some time but you can lower the amount you take and still maintain your fix on the soda. I think it would be harder to just quit it cold turkey. I would replace it with some water or tea drink.

We'll for starters just like any addiction. You could try for rehabilitation. You could also try to slowly eliminate the soda from your diet. Just slowly, let's say for every 21 days you deduct 1 can of soda. This might help and I hope it will. Diabetes is a major cause of many complications.

I am addicted to red bull! I think it's slightly healthier to be addicted to soda than red bull energy drink! However I am starting to forget about my addiction. Just try to drink other liquids. Stick to water it's so good for you.
