Do you wash the new clothes before you wear them?

Washing clothes - Lady washing her laundry.

I have a reason for asking this question. My hubby is the worlds worst for this. When we buy some new piece of clothing he has to have it watched before he wears it. I mean he even wants the new jacket or coat washed before he wears them. Myself I think this is crazy. To me it ain't new after you wash it. The new is all gone. So what do you think about the washing the clothes before you wear them. Are you like that or am I just being too lazy for not wanting to wash the new clothes.

Why Don't You Wash .. - Why DO You Think It Is Not A Good Habit ..
I Am just Like Your Hubby .. I See To it That Everyone In the Family Has New Clothes Washed Before They Put it on themselves .. But .. What's Botering You So Much Just See that the New Clothes Are Washed .. It Is A Good Habit .. At Least I Feel So ..

Really just the fact that I have to wash something that is brand new. I know that sounds silly but... I think it is more that I can get him stirred up for the sake of a good laugh. I do go ahead and wash them after I have a good laugh on him.. Thanks for your comment and have a nice day.

For the exception of jackets that would need to be dry cleaned, I do wash new clothes. People try on these clothes or could have, and I feel better after their washed. I guess to me they are dirty if they come from the store without being washed. If it's not people trying them on, it's just the fact that they've been shipped in trucks, and they could have had dust, or dirt on them, and could have even smelt at one time, but with the store freshening them up! I don't know, that's just me.

Though if the store has a good reputation, people don't think to check. It may not be the store's fault so much as the transportation of said garments, though even then I'd put it down to dust etc that no one can really help!

I think we do need to aware of what can cause use to have a reaction. So far I have been lucky..KNOCK ON WOOD...I always just them out good before I buy them. If I can see the dust I don't buy them. Thanks for thoughts and you have a good day..

It is true that when you wash the new clothes it will loose its lustre and even a dip in the water and later ironing will not make the clothes appear new .So wearing a few times and then washing is the best if you want your clothes to look new .Especially silk clothes once washed will loose its appearance. So it is not a matter of laziness.

I think you for not thinking that I am lazy. I wasn't for sure if I was or not. Then on the other hand sometimes I wonder if hubby is just being way too picky with his clothes. Have a nice day and great tomorrow...

Well it all depends. Most of the time I do not wash new clothes before wearing unless it's underwear or a bra usually, or bikini or something similar. I heard that sometimes in the countries where garments are manufactured, sometimes they are sitting around in boxes and bugs can crawl into the garment... So that's one reason you MAY want to wash before wearing. However, usually I want to wear the garment fairly soon after buying, so I tend NOT to wash before wearing. (Laziness on my part??) I guess we all have our reasons.

Yes there is all kind of reasons from each of us. But that is okay. That is what this is all about. To be able to express yourself and how you feel about certain things. With me I just don't wash the new stuff. Well Yet...

It is always best to wash it. You never know what chemicals are used in the dying. If you have sensitive skin, you really can irritate your skin if it is not washed first. Also...you don't know who handeled the clothes...what they were exposed through in transit from the manufacturer to the store. I think there are exceptions though...like prepackaged socks and underware that are in sealed packaging.

Sensitive skin is a major issue with the washing of new clothes. If someone has sensitive skin then all means they need to take all the precautions to all clothing. Right now me or hubby has no kind of skin problems. If we did then wouldn't be an issue at all.

Well I will give you a good reason for washing new clothes. One if you are asmatic or have allergies you should wash new clothes. I myself wash for almost everything bothers me. People with there perfume who has to load down on them goes on clothes in stores and stays. I just bought a shirt a while back and it was aweful had so many different perfumes on it I about went to the hospital before I got it washed. I had to wash it 2 times with my special soap just to be able to wear it. I wish the epa would regulate perfumes and cleaners like they do our foods for there is so much in these that really could hurt people that many people never even think of it. So this is why he probably washes his clothes before because he had an instant of allergic reaction once.

That is a very good reason to wash those newbies. Im not totally against anyone that has to wash their new clothes. I know several people that have allergies and I will bring it to their attention that it might be the new clothes. I greatly appreciate your comments and bringing up a good point..

For me, it depends on more what the item is than anything else. Like jeans, I will definitely wash them before wearing. I had a friend who didn't one time and had blue legs for days from the dye coming off hahaha. If it's a skirt and I'll be wearing a slip with it, or something that cannot be washed, then I usually don't bother. Swimsuits I always wash. I know all dressing rooms ask that the patrons wear their underwear when trying them on, but I have seen women checking themselves out in the mirror that definitely didn't have their under-grundies on (ewwwwwwww!) I don't usually wash coats or stuff like that, mostly just stuff that touches the skin. Naw, I don't think you're being lazy at all, but I do think hubby might be being a tad over-cautious lol.

I think it more than being a tad over-cautious I think it is a pet peeve or something like that for him. To me it is going way overboard with all the new clothes being washed. I have tried to tell him that I have done it for years and that I am still okay, but no way. I can't help just smile at him and go on.

hi rosepedal no I never wash them b efore I wear them as the modern fabrics are nice and soft. sometimes a few years back some fabrics were harsh and stiff so it almost made sense to wash them first to get all the stiffness out.but modern fabrics and clothing are soft and comfortable to wear as is.

Oh I wish I could get that thru to him. But no way, he has to have them washed first. He isn't that pincky on other things just his clothes. Heck he will wear a wrinkled shirt if I would let him. He doesn't care as long as it is washed first. He is so funny in mine eyes. Thanks for your comment...

I never wash my clothes when I buy them, except for underwear and bathing suits. I like new clothes to feel new! I don't think it a question of being lazy. I think it is a bit weird when people absolutely have to wash them before they wear them!

I like the new feel too. I feel different when I wear new clothes and when I wear the ones that I have had for awhile. It is a weird thing but he is just a good person. I just wash his clothes to make him happy. I don't wash my new clothes except for the undies and bathing suites. You have a nice evening and a better tomorrow..

I guess he has a point there, maybe he's worried that so many people tried on the same jacket or pants and he's worried about catching something. But on the other hand I'm with you. I hate doing laundry anyway so I sure wouldn't wash the clothe that I just bought

I always wash new clothes before i wear them, you never know what kind of germs they have got on them from other people trying them on or handling them before you bought them. My husband also likes his new stuff washed before he wears them.

i wash a new piece of clothing if this has been the one displayed and being tried on by everyone. usually, i ask for a new one not on display, the one coming from the storage, and then that is what i try on. it may be worth mentioning here ... i usually iron new clothes with printed designs before i wear them and wash to help keep the print in its original color. color is retained if ironed before washing. try it!

Oh I didn't know that about keeping the color. Hey I learned something today. I thank you ever so much for sharing that information with me. I know I usually iron but just did it for the wrinkles. Now I have a new reason why to iron. Thanks again for the tip...

I always wash the new cloths before wearing them.It has been a obsession with me since I see a lot of costumers in the mall meddling with those dresses and trying them too.I will never wear a new dress which may be a carrier of the germs from other people. Secondly I would like to wash of the residues of the chemicals of the dye and the starch which are not good for the skin. But my wife always likes to wear the new dresses without washing like you.And I never stand against her wishes and small pleasures.

throw them in the dryer to get the press marks out and hang them up as if they're washed and see if he notices?

dawn...That sounds like an wonderful ideal. I just might try that with his back turned. I will throw a couple of dryer sheets in there too. You know give it that fresh clean smell. I like the way you think.

I have to agree with your hubby about wanting it washed before wearing it, that is to a certain poing, except for jackets. New clothing has a certain chemical smell to it, and I want it washed to have that smell out of it. Some clothing also have a stiffness to it from that chemical.

I didn't know that. I think I would still prefer to laundry the clothes, to me it would still be new, so it wouldn't make a difference. Thanks for the tips though.

Yeah did you know that you can iron that material and it will remove the chemical? That is what I was told from another mylotter. I going to give this a try. I don't mind to iron and plus it doesn't take away the newness.

many companies do put this washing their product first before being used or worn or...whatever... am aware of this but i've always been preceded by this childhood experience where i've seen a new piece of clothing ruined before it was even worn because it was washed first. i've never been able to shake this off... so, new clothes are really new when i wear them with a little dust from the display and all .

you made me remember and somewhat realize that cute shirts are really easily ruined. i see those kinds of shirts around here and they also are tempting to buy but you know what? since i make sure to handwash my shirts (at least those worn outside as most of those that i have always says hand wash or something like it) i always get to think oh cute shirt! another shirt to wash... i'd not just buy it . however, even quality shirts require handwashing or something like handwashing. some even discourages fabric conditioners... feels like we're going back to the olden times when washing machines are not yet around. but then, that's deviating from your topic. happy mylotting friend.

I understand your childhood memory. I have the kind of experince but I wasn't a child. I had bought this shirt and couldn't wait until I could wear it. It was a cheap price shirt. I thought for one time that I would wash it to help with the smell. When I took it out of the washer it was ruined. It has started to thread at the seams. Something that couldn't be fixed. The store refused to take it back because I had washed it. I lost that money and never got to wear either..

lol!I have the same perception as to you too! When i buy new clothes, most of the time I wear them without washing them. At least, i have to first try it myself to see if it cause itch or not. Cause at times, you can't tell. I rarely use clothes after I wash them especially if I really to wear them right away.
