My computer has become very slow and sluggish lately. I have used disk clean to clean up temporary files and old files. I have also freed up some space by saving some of my folders on an external memory. I intend to defrag my hard drive today. Is there anything else I can do to make my computer faster?

You are in the right direction, also do a registry fix and optimization. Though you have not specify your tool for doing this, Ccleaner is one of them. This clears registry entries not needed anymore, ensure all entries are pointing to valid values and sort of defrag registry database for faster access.

Here are a few steps to clean your pc. If you have installed a lot of programs in it then do the following :
1. Go to Start-Run and then type "msconfig" in the Startup Tab uncheck all the unnecessary programs and services that you dont require to run when your computer starts.
NOTE : Do not uncheck items that required for windows startup. For Details read description .
2. The next thing you can do is defragment your hard disk .The best software for this is Diskeeper. This will speed up things a bit.
3. Remove any unwanted programs on your computer.
4.Clean Registry by using software like CCleaner. This will let your computer to speed up by removing unwanted information from the windows registry.

Hey,
Well what I did one day, was go out and upgrade my RAM. I bought 2GB of RAM for about $30 and then I installed it. It made a huge difference to my former 1GB RAM. It is easy to install too. Make sure you have a good day, Happy Lotting!!

Defragmenting is a very good way of speeding up a pc. You can also run a full system scan with an antivirus software, hopefully with latest updates, to see and kick out any virus that might be residing in your pc. Virus that runs some application in the background takes away a lot of the pc resources drastically decreasing the performance of your pc.

Hi Pittan
Disk cleanup and defrag are great tools for helping your computer performance. One thing you may want to check for is a virus, viruses do cause systems to slow down. make sure your software anti virus definitions are up to date and complete a full scan and take care of any of the viruses found (If your virus definitions are not up to date, new viruses can slip by). Also make sure that all of your software/hardware and windows are up to date. Sometimes there are windows updates that are crucial for your system, make sure you have automatic updates enabled.
Good luck

You already did it right..
maybe i can add some about your computer.., We need to increase our ram capacity as old specifications is only 512 mb and 1 gb, then you should upgrade yours to 2 gb or maybe you have to remove programs that run in background that unnecessary because it is eat ram a lot. The processor of your computer is influence too.. Somehow, Try to find how make your computer work lighter.

very well said shanmuksista!
hmm there is another good software for disc defragementation - perfectdisk 2008 that is also good and yeah Ccleaner is too good and definitely running the msconfig is very helpful, well there is one more thing that could be done, delete the shadow copies of the restore point using the disc cleaner and that will remove a lot of used up memory from the c drive and will actually make the computer a little faster except that you loose your previously working restore points except the latest one.... have a nice day all of you!

Sometimes virus also slows your system so first scan your computer then use tuneup utilities or Ccleaner correcting the errors and also defrag your computer with tuneup utilities.By this your computer performance increses.
