Hi Marcia, you shouldn't keep cut watermelons till a week because it would have turn stale and bad by then. Just like any other fruits, once they're cut, they are oxidized when exposed to air and this causes chemical reaction resulting in the taste and flavor of the fruits. Usually I buy half a watermelon and try to finish in 2 days. After which it will taste funny and stale. Or I make into watermelon juice. Hope you enjoyed your watermelon!

I have kept a watermelon once for more than 9 days and when I decided to cut it, I thought it was no more good to eat but to my surprise it was still good so I ate it. I think if you leave it for more than 15 days then it might not be good enough to eat it.

It depends on how fresh the watermelon is. Most of the time, by the time we buy them, they have been sitting in storage for several months, so they aren't going to last as long once you get them home.
If you buy them fresh from a local grower, then they are guaranteed to be fresher and should last a few weeks before you need to eat them.
It is pretty easy to grow your own, and their are varieties out there for just about any gardening situation, even miniatures for apartment living.
