Do You Smile at Strangers?

I love to smile at strangers. But I have to look into their eyes first, because their eyes tell me whether or not they would (or might be) receptive to my smile.
It's surprising how many people seem like they are just waiting for some good reason to smile. When you smile, you may make someone smile too, and pass it along. How about you? Are you too bashful to smile first?

Hello!
I agree you can tell just about everything by looking into someones eyes. I do try to smile at a lot more people and not let my shyness get in the way . A smile is a good start to say hello or a little deeper I like you (like a crush) Sometimes a hello and a smile is all we need to feel a little better after a bad day.
Happy weekend

Yes, I smile at most people, and if I catch their eye, my smile gets bigger. Most people respond well. I haven't had any "bad" responses, but I have known others to turn as I pass and you can see their minds thinking "Do I know that person?"
I often see people sitting on a seat in a shopping mall, looking rather forlorn. If I get a response from a smile, I often sit and chat for a little. It certainly seems to brighten their day.
Smiles cost nothing but can mean a lot to the recipient.

I do smile at strangers as a smile won't cost you anything & it does look pleasant. Now there was an incident, where in a train there was 8 people sitting face to face, 4 each in 2 rows. They where all stranger to one another & sat like that for more than 4 hrs. Now there was a small baby who looked at them & smiled. That smile invoked a conversation between all those who sat there & they really had a great time. Now If the baby wouldn't have gave that Innocent smile, they would all have been strangers & got out when the station comes. so an innocent smile caused some strangers to be friends. So I think a smile can create wonders. So keep smiling

Wow, that's a great story, and a true story I believe, because I can envision that actually happening. And you are right, a smile does not cost anything... unless you need to see a dentist like I do. That's on my list, but for now I'll just a simple icon :) - wait until I reach my 200 goal :)

Nope, I dont. If I, do smile at them for sure my partner is frowning and his whole day turn ruined. Sometimes its hard to win back his mood so i have to avoid things that make him mad. My smile usually misinterpreted so, i have to avoid smilling at strangers.

How weird, I just asked a similiar question in the questions and answers. I didn't even know you posted this! Except mine was asking what people do, because I am definately the sheepish one that bows my head and looks at the ground as a pass someone! I just don't know how to say hi to a stranger. lol.

Yes. Your discussion popped up as a 'similar' after I posted. I left a comment on your discussion too. You don't need to say 'Hi' to a stranger, just look at their eyes. If they look at you with 'smiling' or 'interested' eyes, it's okay to smile. Don't be afraid of being rejected. If someone should refuse to smile back at you... it's their problem not yours. Or maybe they just have too much on their mind to be nice. I've been there, and I don't wanna know how 'ugly' I must have seemed. Keep a smile in your eyes.

I do smile at those strangers who look kind and easy. I think it seems stupid to smile at those who are dull or upset when I am not making a fortune or in a extreme good mood.
Good day. ^_^ (I am smiling now. You know what that means. haha)

ha ha i am guilty of smiling at strangers if they are really cute, or just randomly at someone who looks like they need it.

I always try to smile at the strangers that I meet. The reason behind this is a smile is free to give and you never know if it might be the only good thing that happens to a person in a day. I learned very early in life that if you give a smile then you will get one in return.
I love to think that sometimes I am the only person who makes a person's day worth it. I sometimes think that at times were it not for me, it wouldn't have been worth getting out of bed that day for the stranger.

I love to smile too but not to the strangers normally. It's most likely due to different culture and different mindset perhaps. If I'm smiling at someone on the street here for no particular reason, sure the person may think I'm insane whereas I used to smile at a foreigner and he returned a smile to me. It's so warm...

yep i smile at everybody. i speak and be polite whether they are having a bad day or not. a smile and a kind word goes along way. You never no what people are going thru in their lives or who has hurt them, or neglected them. everybody has their own struggles and what makes them human is how they deal with them. So if my smile will make a difference i will definetly do so.

I am one of those people that smile at strangers. I do find myself disappointed when my smile gets no response. I don't know why it bothers me so much because they are strangers after all but when I smile at someone and they don't return my smile I feel like "wow ok screw you too". I know it's not nice because I don't know maybe they are having a bad day or not feeling well but sometimes I just get offended and think it's rude to not return a smile.
